Errrr NOT impressed

Featured Replies

Bought my FL Octy in June with just shy of 14k on clock, now has 30k on clock and wants a service in bout 1800 miles.

But my problem is the oil, since having the car the oil low light has come on 3 times and each time i've had to put a litre of oil in.

Thats 3 litres and not even been serviced yet!

The engine only holds 3.8 litres!

Utter rubbish, there is no leaks what so ever and it doesn't "appear" to be burning it off!

It's a 2.0 PD by the way.

Have you checked the level on the dipstick? it must be going somewhere, or it's way over filled. I have 85,000 on my clock, get's oil change every 6 months and NEVER had to top up in between, always stays on the level.

my 2005 L&K 2.0 PD used to drink oil like it was going out of fashion.

1 litre every 6000 miles was not uncommon. It was a relief to move to a CR as i never topped it up once in the 32,000 miles i had it (1 service during that)

Sorry Big Nick but PD engines have the tendency to eat oil and your rate isn´t bad at all. Some have to put 1 liter every 5000km.

Once more the question is any oil/engine ready for longlife interval changes

My dad has a Passat 110hp tdi with 310000km and has always changed 100% with synthetic at every 10000km. Even then his driving is not harsh and always consumed 3/4 of a liter of oil.

My PD (ok it's not a 2 litre but still) doesn't consume hardly any oil between services)

If yours is the 105hp they are better than the 90hp or 110hp or 130hp or the few 150hp on oil consumption

Nor does mine and it is a 2 litre. It's 3000 miles roughly since it was serviced and the level has dropped about 2 mm on the dipstick in that time.

Another thing Big Nick, normaly they may eat oil on their first ( many) kms but they also have the tendency to stop and only eat a tiny bit :rofl:

So I think you you need not to worry, just have the oil changed at every 10000km and shouldn´t be any problem. But then if you let it go and put almost 4 liters every 30000km then you do not need to go for serviçe, you have already changed the oil youself ( just kiding)

1 litre of oil for every 5,000 miles doesn't sound right to me.

I'd make my dissatisfaction known when you take it in for it's first service.

My 2.0 PD doesn't use a drop of oil in between services.

Actually if you read the cars book you will see that it is normal for every 1000km done it can consume 1 liter of oil. Really it´s writen.

This is my first VAG car as I was a Vauxhall boy before that a had a few petrol cars that never used oil and I also had a 2 vans (not @ same time)

1st was a Combo with 1.7dti that seemed to use oil from time to time very odd but never more than once between the 20k service.

2nd was a Astravan 1.7cdti that NEVER used a drop from when I got it with 6 miles on the clock to when I gave it to a family member with 189k

I appreciate diesels use a bit of oil when bedding in I could live with 1 top up between services, but 3 top up's @ £15 per litre is complete crap!

Yes I have checked the dipstick I'm not one just to rely on what the dash is telling me it, has NEVER been overfilled.

Mine is the 140ps version and my mother has the same in her Audi on an 07 plate and that has never needed a drop of oil!

This thing tho is being damn right greedy.

The PD2.0 shouldn't use much really.

If it was me, I'd top up the oil to near full, warm it up, then take it for a good italian tune up as this will help remove any issues if the bores have become glazed.

After that let everything cool and check your oil level, then see how you go over the next few weeks.

My Mrs had a 140 L&K on an 07 plate and it drank oil too. It was a company car and driven hard from new, but this made no difference. Before that she had a few different 1.9 VW cars and they were the same....

Nick, firstly your oil use is well within spec.

Secondly, you seem to be paying a fair bit for your oil man! :o

In all seriousness, my 2 Octy's have done over 270,000 miles between them & don't need topping up. But then again, I change it every 6 to 10 K anyway.

I know of 2 people with Vauxhall 1.2 Ecotec's that use a litre every 1000 miles & I believe Vauxhalls accepted spec is a litre every 500 miles?

Your oil consumption is comfortably within spec and not at all excessive. Engine oil consumption can vary quite a bit due to production tolerances (piston-bore clearances) and different types of driving.

Buy your oil in larger quantity (4.5 or 5L can) and from a motor factor (rather than Halfords or a dealer).

Change your oil at least every 10,000 miles. This is important to remove combustion byproducts from the engine which cause accelerated wear.

PD's like oil

I had a 1.9TDI 130 Ibiza (FR) that drank oil like a fish until about 40K then it was great.

I had a vRS 170 PD which invariably needed about 1 litre every 9,000 miles from new to when I changed at 105,000miles. It was serviced every 10k. My brother has a 140PD which also needs oil regularly, although I'm unsure how much. Both cars are remapped & driven like they're stolen, mind you....

As posted by me earlier in the week, my oil level warning light came on unexpectedly. I put in 1l but it is now slightly over full. Possibly 1500miles since I topped up, but I do check regularly and wrestle with the unhelpful info from the dipstick. Mine does use oil, about 1l before the first service at ~15,000 miles.

And my old PD Passat used 1-2l between 10,000 mile services.

PDs do tend to use more oil. The amount of oil these engine will use depends on how the rings have bedded in. Bedding in occurs within the first 5-7k miles. Whatever oil it is using at that point is what it will use for the rest of it's life.

It seems that the more these cars are driven hard in those early miles, the less oil they use.

Many fleet managers believe that the initial synthetic fill hampers the bedding in process and specify semi-synthetic for the initial fill.

Mine is 16k km now, had a service in 15k. In first 15k it drank extra cca 9dl of oil, whitch is OK by my. I read a lot about running in this engines and in connection with bedding in the rings, and finally I did this:

1st 2,5k up to 3k revs, than up to 5k stadily to full throttle, and after 5k I drove it like it drive it allways (a bit more agrressive B) ).

And excesive oil consumption is definetly connected with the mentioned rings......

Agree that it seems to be connected with how they are run in. My previous 140PD was bought 2nd hand and always tended to use about 1l every 5000 right up to when I sold it with 70k on the clock. My current one was bought new and I followed a running in schedule simmilar to the one above and now with 7k on the clock it dosent appear to have used any oil at all. Having said that my old one was the usuall 16v BKD motor wheras my new one being a 4x4 has the 8v BMM. Dont know if that makes a difference??

Lee

My old PD140 octavia used quiet a lot of oil in the first 20K or so miles, and then it slowly tailed off upto the point where at 60K miles it was hardly using any.

If you are letting the oil get down to the point the oil light has come on, you are not doing the engine any favours. Oil should be checked regularly as per the owners handbook, I check mine weekly no matter what the mileage is.
