Road Angel

Featured Replies

I am getting used to the Columbus, but seriously missing both the speed camera alerts and GPS Speed indication I used to get with my old Tom Tom in the Golf. I am considering getting a Road Angel - probably the Professional version, since I object to 'contracts' and 'subscriptions', and am happy to update on-line.

I wonder if any folk have experience of this - as I have some questions regarding fitting. I hate trailing wires (I am thinking of the power supply) and would want to have it wired in. I guess my dealer could do it - not sure whats involved and cost, or if I could do it - I am not really wanting to fiddle in my Yeti's dash unless it is very easy. I think Skoda list them as an accessory, and price appears to be the same as Halfords, for the unit itself, so perhaps dealer is the best route.

Any thoughts please?

If you use an iPhone, you can use PocketGPSWorld's speed camera database & app. it does cost, about £20 for a year. It is the best one out there by far, updated weekly. Many map books have bought their database as well. TomTom version not very good in comparison.

Not sure if it is available for any other devices yet.

Best way not to get caught - don't speedemoticon-0136-giggle.gif.

I know there are occasions when it is hard to tell what the speed limit is etc.

I'd second that on the pocketgpsworld app. It's really good.

Have a look at the Alpha Nova. Small compact does the job. Got mine mounted against 'A' pillar and wire run inside door seal then under drivers seat to lighter socket.

My new Garmin Nuvi 1490TV tells me what the speed limit is :D

Doesn't the columbus display the speed limit for the road?

Nope!

My Columbus does give me the speed limit of the road - if the limits changed since the last map, it can catch you out occasionally. But you should know the speed limit of the road you're driving up!

To be fair, I've kept my tomtom becuase of the full postcode ability. Columbus has failed to find the location about 4 times in 5 months (not too bad), but if I have a meeting I need to be able to find the offices I'm going to, so I often use the built in for most journeys and then (if needed) switch to Tomtom when I get near to where I'm going.

Thanks for the comments folks. My Columbus also does give the speed limit - that's not the same as a camera alert, though, and the screen is not in a place that I consider it safe to keep close attention to it. I Know I do have other options, including going back to my old regularly updated system. But have decided to fit a Road Angel, so really am looking for any clues regarding fitting that specifically - but all input very gratefully receivedemoticon-0100-smile.gif

Apparently the latest maps (v7) have full 7 digit post code search.

Is that Columbus maps? Is there a source I can tell my dealer, I wonder. If it is the case I will want to get an update - guess that's a dealer thing too - anyone know please?

I'd like to know too - since purchasing my Octavia Scout with Columbus two and a half years ago, my dealer has alwys strenuously denied there being any updates!

According to chat in the ICE forum, the v7 release is just about to appear, so your dealer wasn't telling fibs!

Hi

I have had a road angel in my last 4 cars and have always had them wired in as I hate to see loose wires. When I first purchased from halfords I was driving a Mini Cooper S and payed an extra £30 for halfords to fit it. They did a good job. When I then swapped to an Audi I got the dealer to swap the road angel and the same again when I moved to BMW.

However when I purchased my new BMW just over a year ago I decided to upgrade to a Road Angel Professional. Halfords were the cheapest I could find so I purchased and expected to pay them to fit it. However they took one look at my shiny new BMW and did not want to know. They said the electrics were too complicated.

There is an establishment near my work that fits car sound systems and they sell the snooper brand of speed camera detection and they were happy to fit it for £40. A year later I have had no problems.

I am a big fan of road angel, the product has never let me down and saved me a few points in the process. People will say "do not speed" but I find that it can be difficult to determine the speed on some of our roads, especially those with a limit of either 30 or 40 mph. I have found in the past that a lot of camera's are put in areas where the limit has just changed and it is easy to find yourself doing a few mph over the limit as you slow down!

To sum up, I would reccomend road angel as a product and you should be able to find someone to wire it in no problem.

Michael.

As far as I know V7 isn't available yet.

The latest version of the maps does show the speed limit on the roads, I'm almost certain it does anyway!

Michael - thanks for the info!

Allams - thanks also for that - perhaps you will let us know when they are available and if we can order from you? I assume they just load up from a card or something?

My Columbus definately does show the limits, here in the UK, where it knows them. Where a limit changes it responds a tad after it happens, but it's usually spot on, so far. But, as said, it's not the best place to keep looking down to check - for me, at any rate.

I have never seen any limits on the Columbus in DK or other continental Europe countries.
