High Oil Consumption?

Featured Replies

Having recently purchased an octavia vrs (petrol) on a 07 plate, the oil consumpion seems very high. The car has only done 35000, i brought it on 28000 and in that time it's gone through 4 litres of oil!!! Is this normal?

Hi,

How do you drive it? Mine goes through about a liter every 4/5k miles. It does use oil quite a bit.

IME this tends to happen with low mileage, gently driven cars, particularly if they've been run from new on the variable service regime.

Yeah it's fine, they do use quite a bit of oil do a search. I managed to get 1500miles out of mine before I had to top up with a litre :D

Mine likes a schluuup. Normaly 1L every 6k, just topped up this evening

'06, 50k

The VAG specialist I use says it the same with all FSI's.

Mine doesn't. As stated it's all dependent on how they are run in. If it's gently then the bores don't get worn with the rings as well, so they tend to use more oil.

Your car is using oil at around 1 pint per 1000 miles, which is pretty high - but still within the VAG limits for that engine.

Oil consumption on these engines seems to vary quite a bit. My 2008 TFSI uses very very little (in fact it only just perceptably moves on the dipstick between services). I really treated mine like a new born baby for the first 1000-1500miles and followed a rigorous running in procedure.

Driving new engines hard does NOT make them run any better in the long run and is a myth perpetuated on internet forums. Many years ago I ran an engine test lab for a short while. We had to do 'butch' tests on engines. This was done because the manufacturers were getting a lot of warranty claims related to hire cars - which were drived hard from brand new. We took new engines and ran them hard on the dynos, then stripped them and measured everything. Lo and behold they suffered exaggerated bore wear and bearing wear.

Make sure the oil is fairly full, then warm it up and then give it a high rev Italian tune up.

If that doesn't fix it then i'd be slightly concerned just because while it is limits, it's still a lot.

What kind of oil are you using.

i really wouldnt worry about it mine uses about the same as yours, i worried at first but ive had the car a year and a half now and no problems!

Figured it was better to bump an old topic than start a new one... but I bought a 1 litre top up bottle from the dealer (5w30) a few months back and since then must have done in the region of 2,000 miles. I went to check it today and was amazed that it was actually just below the min marker and after sticking in about 800ml I still need to go and buy another bottle to top it up some more.

Seemingly mine is a relatively low mileage (54k) 2006 petrol VRS on, yes you guessed it, variable servicing intervals.. so it sounds like this behaviour is reasonably normal in this situation. Would switching to fixed servicing intervals help - is the oil weight thicker on fixed intervals so will consumption be a bit better?

Thanks in advance.

Not that keen on the variable servicing intervals myself, just had mine serviced at 10K and 1 year old and reset to fixed servicing - which I prefer.

Changing to fixed won't make a lot of sense.

If you are putting in 1 litre every 2,000 miles then you'll have replenished the entire contents of the sump after less than 10,000 miles anyway!

The engine holds 4.6 litres and fixed servicing is every 10,000 miles.

Oh well oil consumption wont really matter to me only do 4k a year happy days

Interesting thread this week I realised my 57 plate had eaten 2ltr in 4700 miles and I was told that is not uncommon wich I find surprising!

I'm on annual services and go through a litre in between.

Consumption has been pretty steady if erratic since new. i.e it'll down that litre all of a sudden at some point in the year but it's pretty random when.

What I did find is that if I top the oil up to max it'll pretty quickly eat half then sit at that point for ages. So now I only fill up to half way between min/max.

Mine is an 06 vRS TFSI with 103,000 miles on the clock.

I use around a liter to every 750 -1100 miles depending on how I drive it. If I drive slowly everywhere and change gear at 2500 rpm it seems to slurp the oil down!!

If I open it up on a regular basis and take it to the red line through the gears (not 3rd, to 6th!!), then it uses much less oil!! Figure that out!

Car has no misfires or hesitations- slight dip on idle every now and again (more so when it hasn't been driven ahem......enthusiatically!)

The car made a standard 207 bhp and 207 lb/ft of torque on a recent RR.

It pulls cleanly from idle to redline in gears- no misses or hesitations once above idle. No smoke from the back end.

Therefore I don't worry!

I change the oil and filter every 3000 miles or 6 months (whichever comes first). Sometimes this means the oil is changed along with the filter at 1500 miles!

I wouldn't worry too much.

2010 TSI 1.8 with DSG, currently 75k on the clock, didn't drink any oil between 0 and 20k, then gradually started taking more and more until it stabilised at about a 1 litre every 1500 miles after 50k.

I can confirm observations of the poster above, in my case the oil is disappearing at alarming rate every time the car is driven in senile fashion in town traffic. Several times a year I do runs for 12-15 hours without any stops across Europe, pushing the engine close to its limits on German autobahns and during those trips the engine does not take even a drop of oil.

Some people on foreign forums suggested the "one spec fits all" long life oil from certain major manufacturer as used by VAG service centres is of particularly terrible quality in recent years and doesn't suit town or mixed driving cycle. Switching to Mobil 1 New Life 0W40 was offered as a quick fix, but I am yet to test this theory.

Mine doesn't. As stated it's all dependent on how they are run in. If it's gently then the bores don't get worn with the rings as well, so they tend to use more oil.

The running in does matter however I am not sure you have it right.

The police Vrs we drive get heavy use from day one and use loads of oil.

I ran mine in before the load pedal was fully used and I used 0.5 litres in 10k miles.

Both petrol and FL models so it is a direct comparison.

Bought my octavia vrs less than a month ago,it had 38k on the clock, ive done roughly 2k in that time, taxi use,ive had to put 2l of oil in it already,is this normal, hope not,or my oil outlay will be as high as my fuel costs lol,ive got 2 months left on the warranty,is it worth getting a garage to look at it,its a mk2 2011

Not sure what a garage is going to do for you with your high oil user.  Maybe an engine rebuild...

It is not normal other than in those engines with issues.

So best look at the pinned thread at the top of the page.

Lots of oil consumption issues mentioned in this thread

Just to add for info- I bought an Octavia Estate mkii 1.8TSi DSG 2010 recently- so smooth & fast- but oil light soon came on after buying it. Did an oil consumption test & warning light was on after 366 miles! Dealer felt it was uneconomical to repair for me & bought it back off me. With hindsight, there was a bit of ‘soot’ around the exhaust area which may have indicated such a problem?

(Have now got a Scout which was what I originally wanted but had compromised as they are so rare- and expensive!)

I have a 2009 octavia estate 1.8tsi.

When i bought it it had about 110 000km on the clock. Drove maybe 2-3000k and noticed the oil consumption.

I took it to a main dealer and they measured the consumption and it was 1,3 litres/1000km which is over double what the manufacturer allows ( I think the small car dealer who sold it to me knew this and added some thick oil because I was able to get more than 1000km before the oil level light lit up).

I had a full service history so i was able to get the 60% coverage for the engine rebuild from Skoda Finland.

Tried to get the rest from the small dealer but he was a complete asshole so no succes...

Total cost of the rebuild was about 5k€

Anyway.... now the car has new modified pistons conrods and timing chain etc... No oil consumption anymore........

It seems to me if you buy a 1.8 TSi pre-MY12, you need to replace rods, pistons, & chain tensioner to have a sound engine! Doesn’t seem right- though I guess there are plenty of owners who are lucky with it all.
