Featured Replies

Evening all, just watching the news heavysnow fall predicted. Scotland and North east have seen some heavy snow.

Im in the North West Manchester to be precise no snow here yet but its only Thursday night.

Im running Goodyear eagle F1 Tyres so iv heard they are no good in snow,

Setting off in 2nd/3rd gear surely cant be good for the dual mass flywheel?

Had a look at the 5 day forecast on the BBC for the Manchester region (I live in Manc too). Looks like we have no worries as the snow is going elsewhere. You can check it here

I've lived down here for 28 years and last year was the first year I can recall proper snow (I am from the North East originally). I am not too worried as even if we get an inch or two, the roads are usually pretty good round here. Travelling for work might be a bit more of a problem however :(

Bloody roads around Northumberland were a nightmare this morning, pure gridlock trying to get onto any dual carriageway. Thankfully the grittters have been out today and the snow isnt settling.

..anyway, back on topic... it's the first time I've driven the Fabia in the snow and tbh it wasnt too bad, but I wouldnt fancy having to start on an incline!

my house sits on a hill :dull: only had the fabia over a month and now worrying how much i could be spinning off hill starts once its here, maybe best parking facing downhill.

The traction control is a bit wierd cos never had it before, but I'm sure you'll find your technique. Downhill starts all the way then lol!

First gear is fine, it's all about being very very smooth and gentle with the clutch for pulling away, and smooth with the breaking and steering. There is a certain amount of traction in any conditions, the key is not to break that.

As for Eagly F1's, (GSD3?? WIth the V tread?) my mrs had them on her MR2 and put it into the central reservation when it was snowy, I've also got them on the front of Furbie, and yes they are pretty pony when it comes to snow and ice. Drive carefully lol.

My eagle f1's were terrible in the snow last year.

Traction control off always!!

Get some rainsport 2s - find these excellent in the snow and of course the rain

They are like rockinghorse ****t to find though!!!

We have full winter tyres so ...No problemo

Found my fabia a delight to use in the snow last year. Though I did have to slow everything down, even managed a few hill starts without problem. One tip is to look well ahead and to slow yourself down using your gears. You keep full control of the car and when it comes to tapping the breaks you should stop instead of sliding to a halt lol

Im using Pirelli P Zero Nero all round.

Try www.bestbuytyres.co.uk for Rainsport 2's - good on price and no problem supplying mine a few weeks ago - they seem to use Formula 1 Fast Fit to fit them - the tyres do seem v.good in these cold/wet conditions so far!

No problems whatsoever last year apart from when I had to do an emergency stop and lost all traction. Had to bump up a kerb to avoid going into the back of the car in front of me, damaging one alloy. The trick is to do everything a bit slower - the Fab has a lot of low down torque so use that to pull yourself through the snow and ice and up hills, use engine braking where you can to avoid skidding and just take it easy. I've got budget brand Maxxis tyres on mine and they coped very well last year.

Yes the V Tread Eagle F1 but I guess il just have to be abit more careful, might just swap the rear to the front if the front realy are so bad, cant remember what make is on the back.

Is traction control no help in snow?

i think i have pirellis all round, dont know what type though

Eagle F1 GSD3's here. Back in January they were terrible in the snow/ice. Got beached in the snow on the parents drive which is slightly uphill. Having cleared the snow it got stuck halfway and I needed to enlist a couple of mates to help push the car out. Similar problem at home with the exit from the car park. One of the previously mentioned mates has a 1.4 Fabia and he was fine.

I ordered some Autosocks (http://www.autosock.co.uk/) which luckily arrived today, just in case...

ASR doesn't really help if the tyres just spin. Once out on gritted roads it's quite handy when one wheel loses traction.

We don't get much snow here, but did in February, local radio recommended switching off traction control.

As others said, smooth and steady is the way, can't help the handbrake turns into the driveway though, will

post pics if I wrap it around a gatepost this winter :D

If you've got Eagle F1's you might as well have got slicks, (or R888s), as they are absolutely useless in the snow. Last winter my T1-Rs were just as bad, as it took me 1 hour to get up my drive. :o I saw on mytyres last night that Kumho winters are £57 each which are cheaper than Toyo summer ones. I wish I had bought some last week.

I haven't ventured out yet (no work so no need to), as my fronts have only 3 mm of tread left. I've just been out and I've got 6 inches of snow on my roof.

Hmm.... I wonder why :wonder:

Capitalist swine!

Any FWD and snow will be not be good on all season tyres. The key is to make use of what little traction there actually is. When even the slightest use of throttle to make slight progress results in wheelspin/skidding, it's time to give up. :) The only good thing is having a big diesel engine over the front wheels helps to give the front wheels a bit more cutting power. If it gets real bad here I will fit the narrow winter tyres steels I have on the back of the mongrel, but this won't help with the front wheels.....

Been out today in the snow, why did they never think to add ABS disable buttons for driving in snow (like there are ASR disable buttons).

I'm really not looking forward to driving in the snow this year as I've had the car lowered since last time it snowed and it was a bloody nightmare then!

Severe Weather Warning is a regular occurence in the North East unfortunately,

Emigration to Australia is looking more and more appealing every day...
