Dam, think rear spring has gone

Featured Replies

Not good, Heard this large twang then lots of rubbing from rear end. Stopped car and offside rear wheel is well under arch. (lucky not to damage much)

Either a section of spring has snapped or they have come adrift from the platform(weitec coilovers)

Too dark to check, so will take a look in the morning. Bought the suspension 01/10/2008 and it appears warranty is for 2 years. Typical!

I bought them from Jabba so may try to still claim as you don't expect a broken spring with that amount of use.

Any one had any experience in claiming for this kind of thing.

Always happens before Christmas :'(

Not heard so much of the rear springs breaking, although that would the cheapest part to fail, so fingers crossed. At least changing the springs is easy on the rear

If bought on a CC can you claim reasonable use against the CC company if Jabba don't want to play (and to be honest I can't see Jabba wanting to cough up!), or does the reasonable use clause only apply to electrical good breaking?

maybe the spring has fallen out completly did you go over large bump ??? or possible just the plastic collar it sits on has broken

hope its all okay buddy

not heard of it on a skoda or with wietecs

Could be Clive ,

I reversed out of a carpark the other day and the rear wheel dropped off the curb so may have dislodged the spring, Although looking underneath the car it looks to still be in place just very low which is why i think spring is broke. Those rear springs sit on a metal ajustable platform so doubt platform has broke. Maybe the top rubber munting bush has come away also. Just have to check it in the morning.

Particularly item 1 - iconic mp3 player, and the caption under the picture of woman using an ancient washing machine.

Now I don't know what other folk think, but I would expect suspension items to do considerably longer than 2 years.

Interesting read I have actually used that sales of good act to claim on a MP3 player funny that. It was a sony that I bought from Currys, and Curry state yo need to deal with Sony, which is Bxxxxxxxks. As I told them to deal with Sony and replace me a unit.

Well it is bad news.

It is a broken spring. Broke right at the bottom where the spring sits on the platform

I called Jabba and they said contact technical support on Monday, so will wait and see. Just does not help confedence on these kits when things like that happen. I would hope Weitec would not want bad publisity, so hoping i get something.

So car is out of action now... Plus the rear arch liner is Fuct.....as the wheel went up and rubbed against it. Lucky did not damage the arch.

Awful mate, but you hear about this happening all the time lately and it's due to the state of our poor roads!

Hope you get it sorted buddy.

im sure they will replace them foc for you buddy

thats bad

Cheers guys, i would hope they would replace as they have a wide reputation and state their quality products.

that sucks mark, sorry to hear,

well i spoke to kw recently about parts for my v2s http://www.kw-suspension.co.uk/contact.php, they supply off the shelf replacemnt parts for kw, so should do the same for weitec.

am quite suprised that has broken like that, its an odd break i wonder if its a manufacturing defect in the metal.

Yeh, is a bad break. Mind you the spring is thin at that end where it flattens off to sit on the platform. Even so should not break as they are toughened.

I guess they are same set up as KW right.

Thats not good,

They look almost new so maybe defective material. Hope you get it fixed asap, why is it these

things always seem to happen in winter?.

Yeh they don't look just over 2 years old do they. Although i do keep them clean and greased up when ever under the car.

It always seems to be in winter and when you are spending on other things.... :'(

Springs always seem to snap in that area. It's the section where you have the transition between seat contact and no seat contact. At least Weitec bother to finish their springs off properly with a ground flat end, unlike the cheap original springs!

I'd say you were just unlucky.

Personally I'd try and contact Weitec direct and purchase two new rear springs. The new ones are yellow though, so your car's going to look like a sweet shop from underneath! Or buy them through Jabba or anyone else.

I can't see them costing more than £100, and they only take 30mins to change. I bought a new rear arch liner the other day. I think it was about £25-30ish.

I'm sure you'll be back on the road in no time buddy :)

It looks like a manufacturing defect to me. In the second shot, you can see a change in the colour of the metal at the break (much lighter colour at both edges). This looks like cracking in the wire, which would be covered and protected from corrosion by the powder-coating.

shame your not closer or you could borrow my standard rears to keep you mobile :(

Thats bad mate,

they look pritty new to me, I have the same set and mine are ok so far, mithe just be the end of the metal you got in your spring as said could be what was left over.

The arch liners are around 25 notes, piddle to fit.

might also be putting it under more stress as you have your car a fair bit lower than mine, I noticed on my bases when I had the car down low that its worn a tad on the base on one side, ie its not sitting fluch. might be part of the trouble?

good luck gettin it sorted, shame the new ones are not green tho lol, they match the car.

Cheers, Contacted Jabba who were very Helpful, who then contacted KW uk direct, who were not so helpful, as they told Jabba i would have to send the broken spring to Germany MFG to check the damage and as they were over the warranty( by a month for gods sake) I would have to buy a new one then maybe get lucky with getting rembursed if found faulty MFG defect. By the way they are £70 each. So I would have to get 2 to be safe. I then phoned KW myself and got exactley the same that Jabba told me so annoyed somewhat. I was thinking if the spring went on the motorway christ knows what would have happend with the kids in the car at speed. Would of blown the tyre for sure.

I may just phone KW again and ask for a better price and screw sending duff spring back(just hate being fobbed off)

I agree, as your comments is how i see it too.

Cheers for that. KW don't have any in stock so even if i ordered i would have to get it direct from KW Germany. I might ask KW to split a Seat leon set up for me. Interesting that the poundage rate for the Leon is higher then the VRS. Front = 1030 and Rear = 1020 whereas VRS Front and rear = 1000. I actually have the Leon on already so may go for the Octy Vrs rating one now??

Cheers Billy , yep car will start looking all sorts of colours underneath now.

I agree that if the spring was to go it would be that point as the metal is quite thin there and the stress is at it's worst.

Even so my bases are ok actually and the platforms are not near the end travel so should still not expect the stress to cause that break, else not much point of making them adjustable.

Ok folks a update on this:

I called KW again Wednesday and they were a little more kind. I have managed to get KW to give me a free replacement spring for the rear near side (one that's not broke) I am just pay upfront for the broken replacement.

Jabba have been great and can't fault them, as they are posting the replacement springs to me postage FOC and also agreed to pick up the duff springs using same carrier and forward them onto the KW factory.

So all in I am paying £72, which may get refunded if broken spring is found to be a mfg defect.

Hope to get Springs next week and get her back on the road.

Update to this.

New springs arrived Thursday and fitted them Friday so back on the road again

It looks like instead of weitec and KW providing a spring for each the spring is now universal to both, i.e it's colour and p/n are the same.

Don't know how the KW maketing people can now offer competive pricing for both kits, as why would someone now pay for a KW set. Even KW have released a basic variant 1 set that is same finnsh as the Weitec's but dearer???

anyways here are them fiited.
