Daylight Running Lights

Featured Replies

Hi Everyone!

I have a FL Octavia vRS and noticed last night that when you put the light switch to the first click that daylight running lights dim.

Anyone else noticed or experienced this? Is there a way to keep them at full on the first click using VAG COM / VCDS?

Also I have seen an extra small bulb at the top of the head lamp cluster that does not do anything, tried all the buttons and switches but it wont turn on.

Does anyone know that that bulb is for? Is it the original single click light bulb? Can it be activated?

Your car is working exactly as every other one does. It initially makes you wonder if things aren't working correctly but it's all done for a reason + VCDS can't alter the settings as far as I'm aware!

Thanks for speed reply! Well that's put my mind at rest now. :)

The LED DRL's act as side lights when you select the first position on your light switch.

Because the vRS is unique in it has the LED type DRL's the 5W side light bulb in the main headlight is redundant and will never work.

Skoda must just fit it to keep things simple and avoid having different headlights for different trim levels.

On other Octavia's with the traditional halogen DRL's next to the fog lights when you select side lights the DRL's turn off completely and the 5W bulb is turned on.

The reason your LED DRL's dim is that they are 'Daylight Running Lights' and are designed to be visible during the day only. Therefore they are too bright for use at night or during reduced visibility.

If you feel the need for side lights or dipped headlights (they remain dim in this switch position too) then I guess we should assume the conditions are such that DRL's may dazzle - hence the reason they dim.

It is kind of strange knowing that when it starts to get dark by turning on your side lights you are actually dimming or reducing your lights. (It's worth noting that when your DRL's are on you have no rear lights).

I guess this supports the "anti side lights" brigade who say they should be used only for parking and that if you need lights on it should be dipped headlights only.

If you've got maxidot it's possible to set your DRL's to work as sidelights. With this done the DRL's are off when lights are switched off, on full when the lights are turned to sidelights & dimmed when headlights are selected.

I can't remember exactly how to get there in the maxidot menu as i had mine done that way when the car was serviced.

Just made more sense to me at this time of year.

This is good, anyone else have any ideas??

I'm sick of people flashing me during the day , quik flash of my xenons & fogs soon puts them right B)

I still dont understand how people are not yet accustomed to DRL's??!

Are the DRLs fitted to all Octys, I have maxidot and I cant find anything about them in any of the menus? :S

The LED ones are only on the vRS's whereas all the others can have them activated by VCDS.

My non VRs works differently. DRL on as the default. When I select the parking lights (little ones in top of headlight assembly) or the headlights, the DRL goes off.

Also goes off when the fog lights are selected separately (adjacent bulbs), but that arrangement is again different from VRs.

Interesting gregoir,

So the little 5W bulbs in the headlight cluster on the vRS do have a use, the parking lights!

Never thought of that

no, as mentioned before the 5w bulb is not used at all in a vrs.

the led strip (above the foglight) on the vrs plays two roles:-

1. DRL (engine on; full power; parking lights off; low beam off;)

2. Parking Lights (engine on; reduced power; parking lights on; foglights on; low beam on;)

on a non-vrs, there is NO led strip like the vrs. the 5w bulb is indeed used as for the parking light. the foglight cluster in a nonVRS is different to the vrs cluster, in that it has the drls incorporated on the side of the foglight reflector.

hence when the parking lights r switched on, the drl bulb in the foglight cluster switches off, and 5w bulb in the headlight cluster switches on :) the drl bulb remains completely off with the parking, fog & low beam positions.

Just to be sure, when you refer to "parking lights" do you actually mean parking lights or side lights.

As I mentioned in a previous post on the vRS side lights use the LED DRL's but they are dimmed.

I was more recently referring to the parking lights? With the ignition off and with either indicator on what happens?

Are the LED DRL's used or is the normally redundant 5W bulb used?

On a vRS the LED DRL's are also the sidelights AND parking lights - the 5w bulbs are not used AT ALL.

I did give a FL vRS a flash today on the M6 by Brum. No issue with the LED DRL but this idiot has fitted HID style lights into the fog lights too! What a tool
