Alternative SatNav to Columbus

Featured Replies

A lad called Morty on the vw forums can change the RNS 510 splash screen to the skoda one and supply for £600. Cheap Columbus that is!

They can be cheap for a reason. Buyer beware!

Indeed, some of the cheaper ones on eBay and the likes are refurbs from Lithuania, Morty from the vw forums is well respected and widely known, he supplies a lot of OEM stuff, brand new from vw.

Patience is a virtue...I did say when I get the chance, and I haven't had the chance yet!

It's ok, I've got a good idea now. Thanks anyway.

is the £600 for new - or refurb

do you have his contact details ??

You will not get a new one for £600. It will either be refurb or 'from another source'.

RNS 510 on eBay

Probably a refurb but at a fraction of the cost of a columbus what does it matter.

How do you know it's probably a refurb. I have other ideas where it might have come from :giggle:

There's loads of stolen ones about, so you need to be careful that you trust where they have come from.

If you end up with a stolen one then you may never be able to update it.

Of course you can update it. Firmware patches are available on internet where you put it on CD and RNS is updated directly from the CD.

Some RNS510 system boards (including my old one) are rendered un-updatable by the older, solder on to the board, security code hack method. Applying a firmware update to a unit with a board like this will give a gateway error and leave the unit in a broken / semi-broken state.

Any pics?

Here ya go...

where do you think it has come from ?

Having had cars with built-in satnav (BMW, MB and Skoda with Columbus) I think they all fall well short of portable aftermarket products from the likes of TomTom. TomTom just has so many advantages, particularly the relatively cheap and frequent map updates.

Columbus is now rather old technology and I just can't see how one of those unit can be worth £600, even new.

There is enough of a forum history of buyers getting stolen units (or in some cases having units stolen!) that any buyer should be very wary. I still can't figure out where this supply of 'refurbs' comes from (are they really that unreliable that so many get shipped back to the factory? - which is in Lithuania??).

Or with the iPhone app, frequent FREE map updates

Hi Nick,

Does your Kenwood interface with maxidot with a bit of VCDS bit/byte bashing ?

Cheers,

Julian.

Speed cam locations and road speeds with warnings???

Can you connect a freeview box directly or do you require a special av box to do so

I will answer your questions about the Kenwood in thread I created about it in the ICE forum.
