frozen Windscreen washers

Featured Replies

My washers have been frozen for just over a week now the stuff that’s in it is almost concentrated how can i unfreeze it and keep it unfroze it seems the stuff in the bottle is ok but the jets are froze it’s so annoying, I’ve even thought about mixing some vodka in see if that stops but I didn’t know if it would damaged the paint or window rubber seals.

It's a shame, because that's the one thing that would have finished the fabia off is heated washer jets..

Mine on a good day are fine when you first get in the car, but once you get driving they freeze..

Are you sure enough of the concentrated screenwash has got from the bottle to the jets?

If not, warm the jets/pipes with a hair dryer and then use the washers until the concentrated screenwash gets to the jets

Pour hot/warm water into the washer bottle to melt whats in there?

I've used Halfords screenwash diluted 50/50 and not frozen at all yet.

same poor warm water on the jets, i had the same excpet my pump actually froze up, so i parked it inside at work one night and worked fine since, added abit of screenwash too as it was vitually water

Mine looked like a fluorescent slush puppy so I topped it up (half filled it) with neat halfords screen wash. At least it came out but then it froze when it hit the windscreen.

If that's their new ordinary screen wash, then according to the back of the bottle, it will freeze at only -2, and undiluted at -7. :o Their double concentrated stuff will be -7 (50/50) and -15 undiluted. So this week you need undiluted double stuff to cope the cold temperatures.

Have a look at my thread to see my observations of that stuff over the years. Halfrauds ScreenWash

I'm sure they wouldn't be too hard to retrofit...

Just get wire, wrap it round the tubes to the jets, and bung some power through it! Hey presto (kinda) heated jets! emoticon-0103-cool.gif

I've been "reprimanded" on here for not using Skoda fluid as per Skoda's recommendations - but I still use Halfords!

With it being so cold recently I've just been using concentrate screenwash with no water and the washer jets are yet to freeze, even at -17 last night they were fine today :)

I think the problems with things getting blocked occurs when things are mixed, so if I move from one to the other I try to keep mixing at an absolute minimum by completely emptying the screenwash first, putting some water in and emptying that (taking care not to keep the motors running too long consecutively) and put what I want in. But even if jets get blocked they cost so little to replace.

I think it tends to be the Skoda dealers that moan about this when people complain of issues, presumably as a means of selling their own screenwash. Apparently they refuse warranty repairs on the system if other screenwash has been used.

The Lidl screenwash that was on offer recently claimed to be suitable for fan jets.

Even if the jets do get blocked, bearing in mind they are only about £5 max a side, surely if you save that in screenwash with Halfords prices over Skodas, over the course of the winter then it's worth it even if you have to replace them again in the spring?

I mean, I'm paying £5 for 10L of non-diluted generic screen wash - with the savings over VW's prices I could buy several new jets. . . .

I got the super concentrated pink Tesco stuff (was £2 a bottle), but havent really had a chance to see how well it coped. It said it copes upto -9 and probably more without water.

I would point out that although people on this list objected, I used Halfords screen wash in my 2004vRS for nearly six years without a problem, excepting it froze once because the winter top-up occurred too late - but that was nothing to do with the brand. The Halfords stuff is SO cheap if you buy the big bottles at "3 for 2"
