Passed MOT :-)

Featured Replies

Just got my car back from its annual inspection, and got advisory that rear discs are worn and that handbrake is barely legal (I kind of sussed this).

Phoned my very helpful local garage to get a quote for new pads and discs all round and they come back with ££211.75 for the fronts and £158.51 for the rears. Didn't think this was too bad to be honest but I was wondering if anyone knows where I can get better prices on the parts? The garage are happy to supply parts I source but won't give them warranty.

Breakdown is (all prices add VAT) :

Front discs £67.82

Front pads £43.39

Rear discs £25.51

Rear pads £40.39

Any pointers would be great, and thanks in advance for any help.

£370 for some discs and pads ? If that doesn't include labour then that's a proper rip off but even if it does then it's pretty steep.

I got a full set of drilled and grooved discs and pads front and back for £150 iirc from eBay and they have been excellent also have a look on www.vwspares.co.uk they seem pretty reasonable

I'm pretty sure I paid £55 fitted for my rears

Matt

If you only need the rears done, why do you want to get the fronts done too?

Just fitted front discs and pads to my vrs today. I fitted Drilled/grooved disc's with mintex pads. Easy job, fair play.

I ordered mine off ebay.

I had the pair of front discs (drilled and grooved set), Mintex brake pads for the front and rear for 99 quid free delivery.

Fitting took me about an hour.

I could have probably got the rear brake discs to for about 30 quid but they're far from worn yet. Shop around mate, don't pay that mental price for them.

Good. Those are the ones I fitted today. They look the bees knees through the alloys to :thumbup:

Could be a good time to do a 312mm front brake upgrade?

Just out of interest which way did you fit these, groove "scooping" forward or the groove going backwards so to speak ?

Dude thats a frickin rip off! I just had a major service on my vRS done yesterday and was discovered I needed new brake pads all round. the service was £150 inclusive of parts and the pads were £120 inc labour. The best pads my mechanic (Matt @ Autohaus Dolby in Sheffield) could source at short notice was Jurids for the front and Brembos for the rear (on a 312mm setup).

Honestly I cant sing this garages praises enough, he's a top guy and really knows his stuff when it comes to VAG cars, he recently fitted a diesel injector for me and has been perfect since.

Thanks for the advice chaps - the £350 odd price was parts and labour, that's why I gave the parts prices too on their own.

I'll certainly be having a shop around for the discs and pads myself and just get the garage to fit them. They're pretty fair with their labour rates I reckon, and besides they're 5 minutes from where I work so it's real easy to drop the car off and pick up. Little back street family run business who strive to keep a good rep.

Hmmm.....drilled brakes....... B)

Tempting.......http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=120427497876&fromMakeTrack=true&ssPageName=VIP:watchlink:top:en

Because on last years MOT it was mentioned, but on this years it wasn't! Can't have got any better and I've just gone over 100K on the clock. Besides I've never been that impressed with the braking as I tend to drive quite hard.

Clicky

That's where I got mine from. They seem fairly decent but I guess only time will tell whether they will last or not.

As for labour rates, I paid £20 per corner, so £80 for labour and about £90 for the parts. Find a good independent to do the work for you if possible.

On a side note, wherever you order the pads from be sure to order the correct kind. there were two different sorts fitted to the vRS. Think I can find some info somewhere. Will add it if I find it.

Brake fitment is a problem because Skoda occasionally changed what was fitted due to supply shortages.

The vast majority (90%+) of vRS have Lucas system, 288mm front discs and no wear sensor.

Just out of interest which way did you fit these, groove "scooping" forward or the groove going backwards so to speak ?

I had instructions with my discs showing me which way they should be.

The bottom of the groove is closest to the the front of the car. Top of the groove is pointing towards the back of the car. :S :giggle: Make sense?

These are the grooves ////

Front of car ///// back of car  If you get what I mean.

This is the way I've put them because the instructions told me so, but it don't really matter I think because I've researched them and many cars have them any way.

Check this link out, it's got a little discussion about which way they should be.

Which way are your's?
