Traction Control Button

Featured Replies

Hi people,

I have just bought a March 2001 (Y) Fabia 1.4 16v Elegance model (100bhp).

Can anyone confirm if this model has traction control? and should it have a switch on the dash (above the radio) to switch it on and off?

Mine doesn't have an on/off switch - is that right?

ps. I haven't got the wheels to spin yet.

The button on the vRS is labelled ASR is there one of these on the dash usually in the centre console high level area.

Nope - all I have is the rear window de-mister and heated seat controls.

There are about 3 or 4 'blank' switches next to the window de-mister where I would expect to find the button but it isn't there . . .

Just seen a spec on a website for a 200 model and no ASR is mentioned "Remote Central Locking, Electric Windows & Mirrors, ABS, Air Con, Heated Seats, Alloys, Power Steering"

Even the skoda website don't list it for a new one

Elegance - The Elegance model features include:

- air-conditioning

- 14" or 15" alloy wheels (dependent on engine)

- ABS

- alarm

- chrome interior details

- cooled glovebox and drinks compartment

- cruise control

- leather steering wheel gear knob and gaiter

BTW how you finding it as I am looking at buying one for the wife for when our little one comes along, need something safe and fairly quick ?

wierd, my Nov 2001 elegance had it. Maybe it was only fitted to 2002 mosel year cars onwards. Don't worry about it.

Not to worry then I guess . . . . I will try again to get some wheelspin and see what happens . . .

Chavboy: I only picked the car up Yesterday so it's maybe too early to give a judgement on how good the car is - but what I will say is that I'm very impressed so far! It's easy to drive and has excellent ride and refinement.

The performance is adequate/good. It's a good engine and likes revs (the max torque comes in at 4400rpm and is stong all the way up to the red line at 6500rpm). Because of the excellent sound proofing you can use quite high revs without feeling like your about to break the engine.

If you do go for one do try and get the 100bhp 1.4 16v model though as it is more economical and better performing than the 8v 1.4 mpi. From what performance figures I have seen it does 0-60 in about 11.5 seconds, with 30-70 (through the gears) coming in at about 11.2 seconds.

I thought it was labelled 'ESP' not 'ASR'?

Could be wrong tho....

ESP is Electronic Stability Program which aids when the cars starts to drift out. ASR is essentially Traction Control.

My 2002 Elegance has "ASR". This is basic traction control. Works well though, had a 1.2 courtesy car, that spun far more easily.

Has a switch above the stereo.

Wife's Touran has ESP - this is far more advanced and monitors all wheels / steering angle etc etc.

Mine is used for local commuting - aircon for summer, heated seats and fits in the garage for winter.

Even though only 100hp, it goes and handles pretty well.

It's still got the same button on it though,

ESP is an optional extra. Will be interesting to see if I get a label or not :D

OK so we know what the ESP acronym means. But does anyone know what the ASR acronym stands for?

ASR=Anti-Slip Regulation System

So it should be ASRS really.

So does the vRS come with traction control (ASR) as standard?

Cos ESP is an extra 400 squids!

Yep! :D

It's the same button - if you get the optional ESP the button no longer says ASR but ESP, without ESP the button says ASR.

Ah right, thats why I was gettin mixed up, cos I thought I'd seen an esp button on a vRS b4!

Just for the record, my 2001 comfort 1.4 16v has ASR :)

Our 2001 (March) Tdi Comfort has ASR and I distinctly remember that we were originally looking at both the Tdi and the 1.4 16v as BOTH had ASR!

Sounds like it might be an old, late-registered model or sourced from another country!

ASR is kinda handy in the wet or on the usual leaf-ridden roads during autumn.

In the vRS I testdrove I definitely needed it pulling away in the first two gears (pulling away pretty hard, uphill and on a slippery surface, admittedly).

I remember from when I had a R21 with about 90 bhp engine wise, I could keep it spinning up to about 40mph  - my excuse is that I enjoyed it :D

Had a whole bunch of free tyres to go through though at the time so that made it less painful financially. I bet those furby tyres aren't quite as cheap somehow :(

Got ESP mainly as I was chucking in all the other options minus satnav pretty much so I thought I might as well. It should help if you're overdoing it going round a bend, or you have to pull around some w*nker pulling out without indicating at the last second :D

Main feature I wouldn't wanna be without though is ABS - my current car hasn't got it and you really need to work very hard not to crash whilst braking as much as possible. Yes I did get tought how to do it in Holland at the time, but ABS makes it a lot easier

It's still got the same button on it though,

It's only just a Y reg - registered March 17th 2001 . . . . maybe that's why . . . . although I'm sure they all (or the 16v models at least) came with traction control from new didn't they?

Anyone out there got a year 2000 with the button?

As far as I'm aware it's not an import - delivery inspection done by a UK Skoda dealer, plus I have a copy of the original V5 which doesn't say anything about it being imported . . .

Interesting hey? . . . .

My November 2000 TDI Elegance had it. I even got it working once or twice.

My car was registered at the end of January 2001 (d'oh tax & MOT coming up shortly then :( ) and has ASR. Looking at the brochures it seems to indicate that it is standard on the 1.4-16v, 2.0-8v and 1.9 PD engines, but I know the brochure isn't 100% on everything.... :D

Where did you buy it from and any chance it's not a UK sourced car, as the specs may be different in other countries. Maybe Ross can help us out? :D
