Heated Screen

I have ordered a heated front screen for my SM (build due mid January, yippee! :D ) but can anyone who has one tell me how it works? (Bear with me on this, I'm not being a complete numpty! ).

My dealer couldn't tell me how it worked except to say that it doesn't work like the Ford Quickclear ones that have fine wires embeded in the screen as Ford has patented that technology????

So is my dealer wrong (bearing in mind that my Caterham has a heated screen with wires embeded in it!) or has Skoda developed a different approach? And can anyone who has one tell me just how well it works in the recent poor weather? Is it really going to mean an end to scraping or de-icing sprays?

Haven't got a clue 'how' it works but it just does - very quickly as well! (by the time the side windows have been scraped you have water running down the clear screen emoticon-0148-yes.gif )

Ditto

Great at demisting long before the engine starts to warm up (and that's petrol, not diesel), and I didn't notice any wires (which doesn't mean there aren't any).

Glad I ordered it in the present weather, it overcomes the problem where having cleared the windows you drive off and the windscreen mists up again as you are driving.

Just because Ford have patented it doesnt mean others cant use it.

Indeed. A number of manufacturers use the patented technology under license, unless Skoda have developed an omniprescence that breathes on the windscreen I suspect this is what they've done.

Hee Hee - I've just ordered a Yeti with heated screen based on the last 3 years with one on our Passat Estate - they are so useful in Winter - start engine, switch on defrost, do side windows, front is melted ready for wipers to clean off water ! The system is the thin wires ala Quickclear - hope the Yeti system is the same.

I also have a heated screen on my 7 ! Are you on Blatchat ? emoticon-0103-cool.gif

Welcome to Briskoda! Enjoy.

I ticked the box for 'heated screen' and can't wait to get my Yeti (Kevin). I have been daily scraping ice off my windscreen in the winter for more years than I'd care to remember. We had the quickclear screen on my wife's Ford Escort a few years back and it functioned really well, although the wires were fairly readily visible. Hopefully 7-8 years on the wires have got thinner!

Search on the Superb forum. I remember someone posted a picture of the wires there. That us why I did not get the heated screen. I don't like those little wires in a windscreen.

I have the heated screen which is of the fine wire technology. It's operated by a button on the centre console.

Must say the Yeti is the best car I've had for winter, heated screen, mirrors and seats what more could you want?

You only really notice the wires in certain lighting conditions ..... I've never found them to be a distraction.

Johann, I have not actively looked for the wires yet but in the 400 miles i have done in my Superb I have yet to see them, that is also with polarized sunglasses on, this was the only reason that did not spec the heated screen when I first put my order in - BUT I am really pleased that I changed my mind!

I agree, the wires are very hard to see. I don't see them with my sunglasses on, I only noticed them in one lighting condition yesterday. It is an amazing piece of kit when the screen freezes. I have also put in on a couple of times whilst driving to help combat the freezing weather up here near Gleneagles.

Have an S-Max at work, and heated wires a real eye sore at night. Might be because i have glasses, but i would not like them on my car. But what an amazing thing on frosty mornings!

My Yeti was an ex-demo which had most everything, but not the screen. I would have had it given the choice - my lovely last Defender XS Tonka toy had one as part of the LR Winter pack, and it worked so well. I could see the wires in some lights, but I don't think it ever was a major issue. Now the weather is the way it is, how I would love to have it again..

A simple method to de-ice the front screen which works very well. Insert a small fan heater into the drivers side footwell and point it towards the clutch pedal. Set the heating for the screen and for interior air circulation. Leave while you clear the side windows.

By the time you return to the front screen the ice will have softened enough to scrape clean and the wipers will have come unstuck.
