4wd Conversion

Featured Replies

Just wondering...do you guys think this would possible giving that our relations have 4wd variants on the same chassis?

I was looking on eBay and found this http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/Audi-s3-8p-06-09-rear-beam-diff-drive-shafts-hubs-vw_W0QQitemZ270683724585QQcategoryZ10372QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp5197.m7QQ_trkparmsZalgo%3DLVI%26itu%3DUCI%26otn%3D5%26po%3DLVI%26ps%3D63%26clkid%3D5945031623085136489#ht_500wt_1150

I'm guessing coupled with an Audi 8P S3 gearbox and transfer box and a bit of fabrication with the connecting drive shaft and exhaust rerouting that this would be possible and relatively not THAT expensive to do. It's whether it's worth it in the end, I was just wondering that's all.

Cheers

possible yes, but worth it no. for the money it would cost you would be better trading up to the equivalent A3 2.0TFSI with the Quattro system. that way its standard, less likely to have problems and wouldnt be a nightmare to insure

Totally possible and I was going to do it. Infact I still have the rear axle including rear brakes and everything at the unit. Obviously surplus to requirements now as I've sold the car.

That's interesting to know. I'm keeping my vRS long term and it's now become a bit of a project. Something I'd like to do is make it 4wd.

I can see the biggest problem being getting the propshaft connected and exhaust moved, the rear axle etc should be a fairly straight forward swap?

wouldn't it be easier to get a 4x4 or scout and transfer/tune engine and add in vrs suspension and body kit?

That would be a lot more expensive, and probably more work.

I've had my car for 4 years now and become attached to it, the only way is enhancement not replacement for me :)

Well if you're hanging on to it the fact the you're basically losing all the money you spend on the conversion won't be a problem. But just because something can be done doesn't mean you should do it.

Dont forget you wil also have to change the fuel tank to a 4x4 saddle tank and require the suction pump for the other side.

Cheers. Was only dreaming and wondering what would be involved. I'll never end up doing this i don't think, but it would be nice!

The fuel tank was the biggest stopper for me, as there's not many petrol mk2 4x4s around so finding a second hand tank would be hard work. I never researched whether the Golf/A3 one is compatible.

I expected there to be some floorpan cutting and welding to be done but from preliminary investigation I would say most of it is bolt on.

Sell it Harry, and get what you want :)

Buying a mk5 R32 would another option I guess Len haha

what about the scout fuel tank?

Some good vids there Sy.

Don't suppose you have anymore info? I agree sourcing a scout fueltank might be the best bet.

Not sure if there is a difference between petrol and diesel, but would have thought VW and Audi ones cant be to different.

Fit a LSD instead? Imagine it being effective and a cheaper alternative.

An LSD will be on it's way soon once I can afford it. Depending how successful it is it may be where I stop. It would be too expensive to do the conversion

Jason's running one and he's running the correct type of fuel and torque. So i cant see it being a problem for a measly petrol :giggle:

do the 4wd conversion, that car looks awesome , be the first in england!

its not about what its worth at the end , its about what you can do. otherwise we wouldnt have the veyron that was only built because it could be.

i know of someone selling a wavetrac LSD fitted to a strengthened gearbox ready to sell as a whole. ill PM you the link

How can you write such nonsense about the Veyron slayer? :'(

lets be fair he's coming from a stage 2+k04. going to a 250hp AWD R32 would be a huge drop in performance.

and standards...... :giggle:

As much as I love the sound and look of R32s, I can see myself regretting it if I changed. Gonna try out a Quaife and see how it goes for now
