Another car insurance thread

Featured Replies

I was fiddling around on Admirals website, seeing what various modifications to the car do the prices. One I found most surprising is that by adding a tracker to the car, I have to pay about £100 extra (10% of the policy) whereas lowering the car is only £60.

Anyone got any ideas why this is? I can't see any logic behind this one as if the car is stolen there's, a much higher chance of recovery, so a lower need for them to pay out. The fact that I live in a decent(ish) area, and there are much nicer cars around to steal than mine (various Audis, Disco's etc within sight of my house) could mean the risk of theft isn't high, so the discounts wouldn't be huge anyway, but why is it going up?

Also found my new wheels aren't needed to be declared as 'we don't cover tyres, so it doesn't matter' (they're the same size etc, just a steal, not alloy).

All seems very odd to me.

That is odd. I spent quite a bit of time shopping around in December for car insurance. Ended up with Swift cover for the Octavia as they were the best price I found. My other insurers couldn't beat their price either! :giggle:

With the Mazda I am with performance direct - on a classic car policy. It might worth a look with your car - being a GTi.

Not old enough yet to be a classic. Not new enough to be new, not old enough to be a classic. Thanks though.

Should point out I'm not looking for insurance until March, I was just very, very bored and trying to help a friend out at the same time. Just thought it queer that adding something beneficial to the insurers added cost. :S

Their underwriters have probably decided that the risk of car thieves ripping your car apart to look for the tracker is enough to justify whacking the prices up.

After the 2 days I wasted at work last week looking for 2 tracker equipped vehicles which were both 100% definately at certain GPS co-ordinates and sending back a live signal according to tracker only to be told (as I was about to wake up a magistrate for a search warrant) that they were giving a location that they had last seen daylight at 7 days previously I'm not sure tracker is that great an investment
