rear wiper

Featured Replies

The rear wiper on my 2010 octavia scout leaves a smear after wiping, it is only around 1 inch across but is right in my centre of vision. I fitted a new wiper blade today (£7 for the sake of the broken plastic retaining clip) and it has not cured it. Anyone else experienced this?

I´m with you on this, mine always from new made smear

It only goes away when I turn on the rear defroster :smirk:

Yep - same here on a 2010 Combi.

It doesn't seem to matter how I clean it - with what, or what temp it is - I'm starting to think it's a design flaw.

If anyone has a solution to this - would be most interested.

My rear wiper vibrates badly. Fitting a new blade didn't really do anything. I'm interested to see if anyone has a cure

When I reverse off the drive during rain, mine vibrates and only partially clears the rear screen. Yesterday I left it on for 10 minutes and noticed that the screen was clear and the vibration had stopped. I then went back to clearing it intermittently after that. It seems to work doing it this way rather than wiping it periodically. My blade is original and will be 3 years old in May.

Had the same with mine, replaced the blade and it is a lot better but not perfect. In rain it clears the screen fine, but with all the crud thrown up from the road on the rear screen of the estate it struggles to clear the screen when using the rear wash wipe.

It seems fine if the screen is really wet, and not so good when clearing salt etc using the wash/wipe. Odd.

I tend to get smears too, as if the blade isn't making full contact with the rear screen. It was worse in my previous 1.9tdi, but the new car isn't as bad - it seems to be a trait of the model / poor wiper arm design.

In my opinion - the jet on the rear wash fires too far down the screen and ends up soaking the bottom half through and therefore cleaning it thoroughly.

Will be taking a peek to see if there is anyway to adjust the aim and aim it higher up the window.

As the amount window to clear is greater the farther up the screen you travel (greater radius) it would make sense to dump more liquid at the top. This and gravity makes the water slide down anyway.

Me too, since buying new rear wiper from Skoda dealer - 3-inch wide area at middle of wiper blade does not clear at centre of wndow. Old one smeared, but at least smeared everywhere. Any ideas about wiper blades which do work properly?

Mine has always smeared from new, I get the horrible scraping noise too. It makes no difference how wet or dry the rear window is.

I think the problem is that it wipes too fast.

Which points to the wiper arm not exerting enough pressure on the centre of the blade, or the blade exerting too much pressure back against the wiper arm.

I wonder if the tension on the spring on the wiper arm can be increased a bit?????

Yes, I get this central band around two inches wide in the middle of the rear wiper that I always thought was to do with a lack of pressure at this point on the wiper rubber compared with the rest of the blade. Minor Skoda design fault no doubt (like the water drippping into the boot when you open the hatch too quickly on a rainy day!).

I found that using a rain repellant glass treatment goes a long way to sorting it out though, not least because you use the wipers a lot less. I know these are marmite products when applied to the windscreen (I like it myself), but most people appreciate the difference on side and rear windows (and wing mirrors come to that). I like the Comma Pro Vision Gel myself (very easy to apply, lasts around 3 months before you need to put another coat on) but apparently the Halfords one does well in tests, and a lot of people swear by Rain-x Rain Repellent Test

My rear wiper works fine (and needs to with the crud an estate picks up at the back) - no smearing or banding in the swept area.

Changed the wiper blades front and rear shortly after I got the car using compatibles from Red Line (red..line on ebay). Think it was about £20 for all 3 and they are still working well.

Didn't see this reply yesterday, but funnily enough came to the same conclusion today whilst fiddling about with the car (fitting the Hauptmann LED Sidelight bulbs) and adjusted the rear wash to squirt right at the top of the wiper travel.

I got a 60 plate vrs hatch and have no probs with rear wiper

Seems to be the Estate owners complaining about this.

No, mines a hatch. But that said, I wouldn't really view it as a major problem, the rear screen clears fine, it's just that there has always been a temporary streak band in the middle after each wiper stroke where the rubber clearly doesn't press as hard on the glass. In the scheme of things it's really not a big issue though...

In Singapore, the hatch doesn't even come with a rear wiper!!!

Washer either hits lower part of the screen or goes over the roof! Guess the window is slightly curved on the hatch. Having said that, the actual wiper works fine.

Another advantage of the estate, the washer being above the screen and not having to fight gravity :giggle:

Noticed this too on my Scout. Rear wiper leaves an uncleaned patch right in the middle of the screen about 2-3 inches high by about 5-6 inches wide. Not a major problem but it's one of those little niggles that can drive you nuts

I too think it's the contact point where the blade attaches to the arm. I'll get round to looking at it sometime when it gets warmer / drier.

I thougt that this was just my bad luck. Same problem and got the jet spray level adjusted but didn't help. Tried everything with the blade but not touched the arm. Anyway, my dealer has replaced the blade FOC and it seems to be a lot better for the moment.

No problems on mine, and I put a new blade on every year, do you take off when you clean to get the rubbers really clean, if they are dity they will drag, I also use rain x
