Antivirus Software...

Featured Replies

Well...it's that time again......my subscription to Norton Antivirus has expired and I need to decide whether to renew, or upgrade to the latest version...I'm using 2004 BTW.

However, I keep seeing this NOD32 Antivirus advertised in magazines, and wondered if anyone knew anything about it. Apparently, it's got all sorts of awards, has NEVER missed an in the wild virus, and has really low system overhead.

All input appreciated

Get no problems with AVG and it's FREE

I have used AVG for a long time now, it works well, it's free: http://www.grisoft.com

If you want more than one PC then you've gotta pay but it's been good :)

Or you sign up with a different email address ;)

i have just installed the free AVG ,uninstalled norton ,then run a systyem scan with AVG,its found two trojan horses.cheers norton. NOT!!!

edit:make that 7 now .not a happy bunny i can tell you

I use (free) avast and haven't had any problems, but am also interested in NOD32 having also seen various recommendations in magazines....erm...so I have nothing to add to this thread :D

I always have a strong belief in that you're better using something more exotic.

All the main ones such as NAV, McAffee, etc are so popular, that if I were to be into virus writing, the first task would be to get round the detection algorithms such programs use.

That's why I use AVG (paid licence to have the extra features) and have never had any problems with it. To be honest, I've not really used the extra features you get with the licences as opposed to the free version and I do find the email scanning not the most intuitive of set ups, but it serves me fine.

I haven't tried NOD32 and like you have heard good vibes about it. So I may take a look at it some time soon :)

The email setup on v7 is virtually transparent though? v6 caused some issues with OE sometimes, whereas this thing just 'does the job' so it seems :D

I did have some fun with the updates not completing, i.e. x number of bytes downloaded but it never finishes. If this happens (smells of an old bug they had in v6) just cancel, say 'yes' to confirm that's what you wanna do, and manually update again. Has happened on a few of my machines recently.

It does pick up most virus signatures :)

I thought it was ill-advised to install 2 AV progs at the same time. I'm gonna disconnect from the net, then delete Norton and install NOD32, before going back on the net.

Sorry...from the original post, I thought you had both progs running at the same time, which I believe can (though not necessarily) cause problems and even IIRC false alerts...if you deleted norton before running AVG, then there shouldn't be a problem.

blood pressure now back to normal :)

Just done a quick google to see if my memory was serving me correctly, or whether I was just spouting a load of rubbish :)

Some people advise against it, saying as I did that it can cause false alarms etc. then there are some that are apparently happily running 2, and even in one case, 3 scanners at all times......though not quite sure why they would want to.

paranioa probably :)

It is a bad idea running more than 1 antivirus and 1 firewall at a time. The reasons are that the windows network stack cannot cope properly, they fight each other quite a bit ;)

You can keep multiple virus scanners installed, but don't have the 'real-time-scan' enabled on all, just do that on one. You can run a disc scan with the other one(s) if you like, and say once a month that may be worth doing as it might catch stuff.

Firewalls are worse to mix up, as they could end up blocking access to each others ;)

I'll be downloading it tomorrow' date=' so I'll let you all know what I think :)

Yeah, keep us posted...

Aha.....

Daughters pc runs Avast, and its good. Mine runs Nod32, and I would say it is cracking.

Its scans at a very fast rate when on-demand scanning is called for, it monitors real-time very effectively without serious system demands, and updates very regularly and is very quick when new virus are spotted to find a cure.

I have just renewed my license fee another year as I rate it highly.

I even game on-line without disableing it without any infringment on my con or gameplay.

Only thing I would add and this is aimed at your Norton.., is to make sure you fully disable Norton before you uninstall it as it is notoriously hard to rid from the system.

I should add that the support forum for Nod32 is here..http://www.wilderssecurity.com/

F-secure was recently crowned best Anti-virus package by Computer Shopper magazine.

Cheers mate...didn't have any probs getting rid of Norton. Just disabled the scanner, then removed it through add/remove on the control panel. After the reboot, I also add/removed the Liveupdate component, and something else that was labelled as norton.

Nod32 is on now, and I have to say it seems quite nice...and fast. Also, at
