oil advice

Featured Replies

got a 2004 octavia vrs with a 120,000 miles on been serviced by dealers every 10,000 for 11 stamps but no idea what oil to use or top up with??????????????

If you're changing the oil every 10k, use a decent 5w40 or even 0w40. It needs to say either VW502.00 of 504.00 on the bottle though.

I use mobil 1 or millers, whichever is cheaper at the time, and a new filter form the dealers (about 4 quid).

sweet was told 5w30 by a couple of people?????????????

Depends, the vrs can run on variable servicing of fixed servicing.

Variable needs the 5w30 longlife oil, and can last up to 20k miles (Way too long imho).

Fixed annual oil changes, 5w40 is fine.

Go to skoda Oil, oil filter and sump plug for under £30 (pre vat rise prices) Then you know you've got all the right stuff :)

yeah dealers may be best or may phone d m keith at york think they should be able to check on history whats been used? 10,000 miles seems too little for long life but long for 5/40

What am i gonna put in it guys dm keith said 10w40 :o

My dealers give me quantum platinum 5w40 with filter and sump plug under £30

Have you seen this (its a bit on the small size). That's the price for an oil and filter change.

I only do about 6k a year so just get my oil changed at my local VAG specialist. I'm picking up some 10W40 from VW tonight to top mine up.

Cracking value though.

Quantum recommend "Quantum Longlife III" for the vRS, for both fixed and variable schedules. Which is a fully synthetic 5W-30.

Castrol do the same, and recommend "Castrol Edge 5W-30" for any service schedule on the vRS. (I've been using this for 3.5yrs)

http://www.castrol.com/castrol/iframe.do?categoryId=9024084&contentId=7044829

Shell again recommend "Shell Helix Ultra AV-L 5W-30" as a premium choice for both service schedules.

http://www.shell.co.uk/home/page/gbr/products_services/on_the_road/oils_lubricants/shell_helix_tpkg/lubematch/app_lubematch.html

There are some secondary alternative options from most of the manufacturers, but the 5W-30 remains the recommended/primary/premium choice for the vRS.

top spec oil to use is 5w30 long life, 5w40 fully synthetic is also fine aswell as 10w40 providing they meet VAG specification. they all left the factory with 5w30 in them and thats what i use in mine for the sake of another £10 i like to know its got the best in it

Just a comment re the 5W-30 VAG spec, being the correct specification engine oil for our cars.

The VAG oil specification relates only to std factory spec cars.

Any engine modifications that increase the engines power output will result in higher engine/components temperatures, and greater loads placed on the oil.

Which is why in my car, I use an appropriate engine oil........Mobil 1 SHC 0W-40.

Bill.

just bought some quantum synta platinum 5W40 from VW to top mine off. A lot of people are using it in their S3's so should be fine for my lowly ocy.

u need to see what the service schedule is set to ... should say in the service book ... but personal choice, i dont use anything but 5w 30 vag spec oil  have done since the car was new and its now done nearly 118,000 miles  had no issues at all

cars done 120k now and has been serviced every 10 thousand miles but no idea what with ??????????? :'(

When i went to my dealers they told me that they use quantum platinum 5w40 on all petrol engined cars on normal servicing needing fully synthetic and that it had supercided the previous spec oil. I change mine every 5 to 6k so aslong as it's up to spec i'm not worried

I use Motul, the first change used VW Specific 504 507 5W30, but I think last time I used Motul Sport 5w-50 will have to check the receipt!

Why use anything other than 5w-30? genuine question not a comment im interested to know what the advantage is of using a higher/more expensive spec

Is there any advantage in using 5w-40 for a 6 month change as opposed to long life on a yearly/ 10k (I wouldnt keep it in any longer than that personally) apart from if the car is used on short journeys vs. motorway?
