:) We have a Fabia 02 tdi 100bhp diesel and are only getting about 45 mpg and its done about 20000 mls no way near the Octavias (around 55 mpg) what are you getting ? Is the cold start staying on ?

I've got an '01 Fabia with the same engine and (according to my spreadsheet), I've averaged 49.2mpg over the 17k I've owned it (10 months). Mine does have a hard life though and I don't drive for economy (;)) and I usually see over 50-55mpg on a typical journey and even managed 60.2mpg this morning, but I was being sensible because of the icy roads.... :)

I believe the Octy returns better figures as the gearing is longer?

:) I have put some injector cleaner in the tank so hopefully I should see an improvement, can the dealers check if its overfueling ? as I can drive it very slowly and still only recieve 42-45 mpg, the engine should have loosened up by now :finger:

Slowly isn't always the answer - it's about not having the throttle down much. So sometimes by being in a lower gear, you don't need to have the throttle so far down for the speed you're going at...

Try running on the instantaneous MPG readout for a bit, and see how it changes as you drive.

Rob.

Best way to check if it's overfuelling is to get someone to follow you and see how much soot the car produces under full throttle. If it's really sooty, then it will be overfuelling for the amount of air available.

Worth also checking the air intake is clear and that the air filter is clean as these may be restricting the amount of air getting to the engine. Other thing it could be is the MAF sensor, but I think the symptoms of that are a bit more pronounced and you'd probably have noticed performance problems.

Dealer will be able to check the ECU for fault codes, etc to see if anything has been logged......

Have you tried a selection of fuels?

I now stick to esso super diesel which has a high cetane rating, as the economy seems to be much better when i use this..my Vrs often getting over 50mpg when i drive at average speed on the work run.

For a few weeks i was using a very small brand diesel (Wirral fuels) and struggled to hit 40mpg...it was so bad i was worried i had a fuel leak and actually checked under the car :P

I now stick to esso super diesel which has a high cetane rating

Have you got any info on this and what bog-standard city diesel's cetane is? The Esso website was pretty useless for info :D

Chris

Sorry, its been a tough monday so far... :o

you couldnt find anything on the esso site because what i actually meant to say was Shell Diesel Extra!

It has a cetane rating of 58 and is basically the diesel equivalent of shell optimax petrol. There are a few discussions about it on the Honest john website if you search there. Some people seem to mention it does work particuarly well with VAG PD engines.

BTW City diesel seems to have a cetane rating range from 50 to 55

Cool - thanks for the info :D I have to confess I tried Shell Diesel Extra (my Scooby only ever drank Optimax!) for a few tank fulls and then used my local Tesco since then as it's cheaper and more convenient. Not noticed any difference in economy or performance between the two though, but I know others on here have

Maybe Shell supply my local Tesco?

:) Must admit to only putting Tesco diesel in both the Octavia and the Fabia but I am now way near the decent economy of the others, must log it in to the dealers to see if there are any fault codes logged, any codes to look out for ?

Hard to say what faults might be logged, but they'll run a full system scan and you'll get a list of any faults that have been logged by the car since the last time they were cleared :D

Alternatively, leave the car in my care for a couple of weeks and I'll "run it in" for you ;)

Chris

I normally use either Shell Diesel Extra or standard BP diesel and I cant notice any difference between the two at all.

Managed to get 60.2 MPG on the way to work today in my 195 bhp beast :) I was nannying it though...

My Wife's Fabia PD100 has a life of Town Centre driving and sometimes doesn't break 40mpg. On the other hand if I take it to work which is a ten mile A road run I can get it above 60mpg and high 50's is easy.

It's going to depend a lot on the type of driving you are doing.

My Octavia TDi actually has shorter gearing by about 4mph per 1000rpm according to the Speedo. Even with the tuning box the Octy is more economical than the Furby at higher speeds, could be down to aerodynamics either that or the PD engines are not as efficient.

Around town there isn't much to choose between the two for mpg.

The PD engine is vastly more refined though.

The 110bhp TDi was regarded as the most fuel efficient Diesel VAG have produced to date, PD technology was introduced to provide more performance, at the detriment of economy.

Our TDi Octy is a lot quicker than our TDPD Fabia but the tuning box may have something to do with that. :) It's still more economical though.

The main draw back with the older TDi engine is diesel noise, even inside with the windows up you can never mistake it for anything other than a diesel and at motorway speeds you have to put up with a diesel thrum. The Fabia at the same speed is almost silent.

:) The wife uses the Fabia every day into school about 6mls one way in town driving and ruturns about 35-40mpg if shes lucky, when I drive it into work around 9mls one way again in town traffic and not clogging it I only return 40-45mpg which is not very good at all :thumbdwn:

Maybe, like a good woman, it'll loosen up with age......

Short distance driving is never a good plan if you want to get good mpg - stable speeds and infrequent acceleration is key.

Traffic jams kill your mpg rating, generallly speaking, especially with a car like my existing one which has a high(ish) idle tickover (>1k rpm).

Sounds like some strange figures there!... We regularly get over 50mpg from our Fabia Combi TDi and over 60mpg on a long run!... even with 78,000mls on the clock and Tescos Diesel!

I think the key is that it needs to be run in (and I mean 15k+ miles on the clock, not the running in the engine minimum thing). It's a pattern spotted by many on this site - more miles = better mpg. Not sure when that starts to reverse itself, no doubt it will at some stage though

Hi our little fabia gets average 55 mpg varied driveing, best ever was 78mpg! on A3-M25-A13 around midday on a Monday! must have been watching the fuel computor to much!
