I am seriously tempted to trade my mark one in when I have some money especially now I have had a chance to spend an hour with a car on my own (trusting local dealer). I think the esate especially looks stunning and would be a great little Q car. Let's hope I will be able to get the equivalent of the VAT free if I do decide to trade in next year. Driving this back to back with the diesel you do miss the thump of torque (although the twin charge does pull really well) but it really does shift with a few revs and the engine with the window open sounds fantastic. I first drove this car briefly when it first cam out and I did not like the hesitation from rest from the DSG. They seem to have ironed that out now so....we will see.

Thanks for the photos guys: cool thread :)

doit matt, mine has no hesitation, and no oil usage :) and it beat the mongrel on a drag on an airfield to 90 mph ;)

I brought my fabia VRS from skoda dealer in london 4 months ago, only tuesday have i been pulled over for the first time about my window tint ( which i assumed where standard on the VRS) can anyone tell me if they are stadard like this or the previous owner might of tinted them?

few reason i am annoyed

1) the police wouldnt do a test to see if enough light passes through and made me scratch at the tint/windows to get some off, but it was so hard to get off which is what made me think they are factory fitted, so if this is the case i will be making the police pay for my windows to be re-done

2) if Skoda have sold me the car illegally (with tinted window which is an offence) i will be making sure they pay for me to have new windows put in.

3) if the are illegal technically my insurance if void

4) Now i have been put on the police computer and will get pulled everytime they see me

5) ive been told by the police i have to drive round with windows open (which im not doing coz its bloody cold)

If anyone should shead some light into this be much appriciate ( if you want to look at the darkness of my windows you can prob see them in the picture i uploaded above in this thread

1) without a light meter they CANNOT make you take it of because they CANNOT be sure its illegal.

2) they are factory tinted at the rear, rear windows do not have to meet the light requirements, just front windows and windscreen (for example there is a fiat punto, and a fiat punto VAN!)

3) its is not impossible that it has been tinted by someone post build, just get a friendly policeman to check it with a light meter, go down the station!

cheers

Thanks for your comment much appriciated.

We have now found out these arent standard and are too dark, so the skoda dealer have accepted resposibilty for selling me the car like this and have agreed to sort the car back to 'standard' free of charge

Dude, that's porn!

going to remove the rear wiper soon also .

Would be nice to see. Not sure if I would be brave enough to do it.

Look for glass grommets. There is a German company that makes high quality grommets.

There we go http://www.gecleant.de/shop/glasstopfen.html but I'm sure you've seen these already ;)

Snow... god damn snow! Sitting on my 17" winter-tyres instead off the 18" on the pic, damn it's slippery with those!

EDIT: This snow was what came the first day for us here in Gothenburg.

Wiped it clean and it snowed the next day... with the same amount :p!

I've been having an extra-job, I own a plow!

New spot for the boost-meter aswell, playing around with some different things here.

Probably gonna paint the frame for the dials rallye-green and install the meter in the middle aswell...

And get rid off the K&N-decal since I don't even have that anymore xD!

Thought I'd update after nearly 3 weeks and 1500 miles of the new VRS.

Looks-wise the car has grown on me a lot. My colour scheme, race blue white roof and wheels, is more in your face then the black Magic mk 1 but I think it's particularly flattering to the slighly gawky styling. The new black pack lights and grill give it that added edge at the front and help to blrnd in the slightly awkward headlight shape. The white wheels obviously don't stay white for long, but really emphasise the 17" wheels and make them seem better proportioned to the boxy body shape. I simply love the colour, and just gives it that extra sporty edge to a car that could otherwise blend completely in to bland hatchback hordes.

Performance and handling wise it is definitely a step ahead. Firstly it's more welcome than I thought not to hear that clattery diesel anymore. The engine is a little gem, although the tech in it and the dsg box make me certain I wouldn't want one out of warranty. It's a very eager little thing, and compared to the TDI's "here's all my power in one kick" delivery it's great to have something that'll happily rev to the limit, but also prove impressively torquey down at the lower end. It's mentioned in all the reviews but it's a proper split character car. It'll pootle about happily and not feel different from any other runabout. Floor it or put it in sport mode and it'll make you smile in incredulity. How can this be less to insure??! I suspect a remapped Fabia would be on a par with it, and the lack of that tdi shove doesn't make it feel massively quicker, but DSG box is probably it's trump card. It handles noticeably better, much sharper steering feel and quicker turn-in just on a par with something like an older model Focus, still my benchmark of a family hatch. It does roll a bit, and the ride is firm but compliant, only really proving a tad too harsh on particularly rough surfaced roads rather than bigger lumps and bumps.

Inside it feels like a more modern car, with cruise, bluetooth, rear sensors and mdi link stereo. The stereo is pretty good as standard and everything feels solid. Yes it's a bit dull inside without even the little chrome handle touch of the mk 1, but having normal dark seats again is very welcome, and they feel a touch more supportive in this car. One disappointment for me is you still can't fold the rear seats completely flat without mobing the front seats a little forward first, losing your driving position unless you memorise the seat rail notches!

Finally the dsg-only move. Would I prefer a 6 speed manual? If I didn't have a little MX5 tucked in the garage for summer fun then possibly yes. As good as the DSG is, changing gear even in manual mode does feel like a detached digital process. There's no sense of any mechanical human/vehicle connection. Driving to work everyday in traffic this is welcome, as clutch dipping and endless gear changes does become a chore. Driving fir fun is a different matter though and quite simply the VRS is so easy, it's point and squirt. The box is very clever though, changing up eco-early when your being light on the accelerator and returning nearly 45mpg on a long leisurely cruise. Show a bit more urgency or aggression even in D and it'll hold the revs enabling good progress. Only slightly sluggish feeling is full throttle kickdown, there's a noticeable lag before the box jumps down a couple gears. I haven't noticed much stop start hesitation as criticised by some, after some initial throttle feel adjustments to your driving style.

It's inevitably going to cost more to run in fuel than a mk1, especially if honouring the super RON recomnendation, and purely going on everyday performance it doesn't quite have the value for money touch of a mk1. It does however, when considered as a whole package and combined with a favourable sales deal including free services and reduced insurance and tax costs, I'm very happy I made the change. Due to all the complex tech I doubt she'll be a keeper for more than the finance schedule, but I feel I have both quick petrol car and (as good as) new car ticked off the bucket list!

Oh and yes it has needed some oil, but not an overly concerning amount. And the alloys have crap lacquer finish. And the wipers don't have the little bonus anti-smear wipe. And the lights are notably poor beam pattern in the pitch black. Not too bad on the negatives list...

Good review. It is interesting you mentioned body roll, which I frankly did not notice at all :). Agreed with dipped beam being too low but pattern, side spread and uniformity are quite good, especially after Ring 120% bulbs upgrade :D.

My one is 1/3 from the bottom of the hatch area on the Dipstick of Horror. That is 2100miles from brand new. Not too bad for a new car I running in period.

One thing I'd not agree is the manual slush box sentiment - with DSG tech this became an anachronism to be quick forgotten. DSG does everything better than any manual can ever hope to achieve.

OM NOM NOM!

:giggle: Never noticed any roll!!!! Ive seen yachts with less roll :giggle: You need a go in one with ARBs/springs!!

Now you buggered off north what am I supposed to do? :D.

I do however differentiate between track weapons and everyday drivers (not mutually exclusive of course). For a daily driver in my book it has next to no body roll. For a track weapon, I do not know as I had no chance to track it yet :). Compared to a single seater Formula Ford or the like then yes, yahts are better :D

BTW, what happened to the lights?

:giggle: Never noticed any roll!!!! Ive seen yachts with less roll :giggle: You need a go in one with ARBs/springs!!

@ TeebsvRS Dont forget with 98/99 ron fuel you will get better economy than what you will running 95 ron, so the extra cost is potentially cancelled out.

Regarding DSG to be slow to react and not being involving i disagree. If you want to stick your foot down, why wait for it to kickdown, why not just tap the downshift paddle a couple times? And as for not being involving, in purely manual mode on the paddles on track it is immense. Way better than manual IMO. If you feel like you need to change gear as in a manual, why not use it as a tiptronic and knock the gears up/down via the gear stick?

IMO, the reason most people and journos dont find them involving is that they are just not used to it. I struggled to get used to them whilst driving quickly and felt like i wasnt 100% confident or almost felt detached. Once your used to it, its unbelieveable and you can be so much faster with both hand on the wheel and no clutch to mess about with. Makes me laugh. When they test Astons, and ferrari's etc, they never moan about the paddles detaching the drive, yet put it in a hatch and all of a sudden they would prefer a manual!!!

I have to say that I agree with every word of this.

IMO the suspension is softer than my previous Octy vRs,so the ride is slighly better. For normal quick motoring it's OK ,but when I threw it around a bit on my favourite twisty road it didn't feel great.Eibach springs in the Spring!

Why on earth would you NOT put in super unleaded?

The box is the best of both worlds, most of the time I relax in 'D' my arm on the centre rest, but, when in the mood ,the paddles can change gear quicker than I can,and don't make stupid errors, like say clumsily going from 2nd to fifth.
