New Headunit MASSIVE AMOUNT OF WIRES

Featured Replies

Hi Guys,

Recently Baught a Clarion vz409E http://www.carpages.co.uk/news/clarion-vz409e-12-11-09.asp.

Its been a pig to fit with the cage not wanting to go in so had to file away a little at the sides before it slotted in nicely, then the undertray wouldnt slot back in without bending the cage, so had to file away that to get it that to slide in flush, now its all been connected up (bar brake wire...) theres simple no were for the wires to go. Ive removed the glovebox which does pretty much nothing at all!!

So my question is were in the world can I put all these wires so my unit will push into the cage. Also this is a question more aimed at the people who have dvd compatible units. How have you gone about wiring in the brake wire, cos i dont fancy ripping anymore of my car up :S

Plus before anyone says I do appologise for asking I HAVE used the search function but most of the time people just say rip out the glovebox which has done nothing for me.

Thanks for anyone who can help me, my dash is in bits :'(

I either left my brake wire off or attached it to a earth or what ever it needed to be on to work. Yes it plays dvds whilst driving but I never ever use any function other than music anyway. sorry i cant help you with the rest though

There is space behind the 'cage' that makes up the centre console, but it's not easy to feed stuff into / out of there. There's also a little space above there, behind the centre vents, which is where the connector box for my Alpine CD changer sits. If you're struggling, you should be able to push the centre vents out from behind if you have the stereo and glove compartment out, and the guide I did for the air con / heater panel tells you how to get the centre console out:

With the handbrake wire - most units simply look for an earth to allow it to play dvds, so for less hassle, you could just connect it inline with an earth behind the headunit. However, I know some Pioneer units (a couple of years ago, admittedly) were very clever and checked the speed signal wire along with the handbrake wire, obviously comparing them to check whether you were moving 'with the handbrake up'!

Tip 1, BFI to get the cage in

Tip 2, File the fins off the top of the undertray to get it back in.

Tip 3, Fit the HU leaving the Undertray out, use that gap to tuck all the wires out of the way, then refit the under tray.

Handbrake wire.... as above. EARTH THE MO FO! lol

To move all the cabling whilst pushing the headunit in, requires this method. It has worked for me many times.

Slide a blunt knife in the location shown in the picture below and push down gently, which will lift the centre vent up and out, hold it with one finger, and do the same process to the other side of the vent, and it should just pull out (don't forget to unclip the hazard warning switch). Now you can get your hand behind the headunit, and move the cables around to allow the headunit to slide in. Good luck!

If you have to remove the Vents to do this im worried for your car(s)

I had a Similar problem, so took the centre console out and pulled the wires though to the space behind the piece of trim between the centre console and dash fitted easy then.

To get my cage to fit i filed all the edged on the rear of it round to stop it catching on the plastic.

Why's that then? I would be more worried about your car by shoving the headunit in and pinching wires! It's a very tight space behind there, especially with lots of wires for iPod's etc, perfectly reasonable to remove the vent, as it takes about 10 seconds to do so.

I have managed to get all the wires back there better than the pro fitter i know would.

and alls i used was the space where the cubby tray is..... i dont just cram! i get things to fit nice.

Iv'e just fitted a double din HU into my vRS and I too had this problem mainly because of the wiring loom - My advice w/o removing anything is to slide the standard loom behind the random bit of plastic and keep it behind there then plug the loom into this and sorta tilt it the connecters as you slide the HU in.

This seems vague but you will understand what im going on about hoefully if you havent sorted this already.

O.K so you used the space below, and I used the space above, what's the issue? Either way will get the job done neatly, which the OP wanted to know.

Funny that I suggested removing the entire centre console and nobody batted an eyelid!

So you agree there is no need to take half your car apart to install a HU? use the space below

Very true! :giggle:

Don't you realise that removing the vents is a 30 second job and it hugely increases the accessability of the rear of the HU. In reality you saying not to do it isn't helping in the slightest, its making things harder. Some people don't want to blindly scrabble around behind the console/glovebox whilst forcing the HU in.

I give up.

If this is what the forum has turned into then i might just lurk. Read again No Forcing. no Blindly Scrabbleing. using the space provided by the removal of the gubby tray to ............. you know what forget it! :finger:

Hi TorqueXIsXCheap

On my double din unit there were a lot of wires as well which did make it very difficult to fit them all in. As long as you do not mind doing a bit of butchering to your car, there are two plastic locating mouldings (for the locating plug on the back of HU to fit into) these can be carefully removed using a hack saw blade. This will then enable you to slide the wire back easily. The head unit is still very stable even without the plastic these mouldings.

I don't think his is a double din.

Hi Simonbt,

It does not matter, there are two plastic mouldings one on the top and one one the botton behind the clip out tray. I remove the top one to make life easier when I had a single din unit and then removed the bottom one when I upgraded to the double din unit.

Hope this helps

only reason i mention it is i think the tray that sits under a single din HU needs that locator plug so not to rattle around, feels like its seating quite snugly when i fit mine in there.
