octy vrs is dead.

Featured Replies

well looks like my 52 plate vrs has died.

the oil light came on last night,i topped it up & still on.after about 10 mins driving the engine started making loud rattles like a deisal

engine.

when i opened bonnet sounds like the top cam has gone.

looks like it will have to be sold as spares as i cant afford to fix it.

so its going on ebay i think.

im gutted.

shame cos 1 hour before my wife just get her brand new car...gggrrrr

another oil pickup failure...... :'(

if only you hadn't carried on driving with the oil light on. You may have saved the engine with a simple pick-up swap.

teesside mate.

its done me well.had her for about 4 years...never realy cost me much ,i would get another if & when i have the means.

Id still be temted to drop the sump & replace the oil pick up pipe, fill up with oil & start the car & see what its like before condeming it to be broken up for spares, you may be lucky & save the engine & maybe even the turbo. Its worth a try for the little outlay & work req to do this.

Not another one!

What oil grade/make were you running, and how often was it changed?

I personally think this sludge problem is caused by people not using the correct grade of oil, or cheap oil that doen't meet the VAG spec. Combined with long periods between oil/filter changes. The way the oil is changed may also affect things. The oil should be drained hot, and from the sump plug, to try and get as much sludge as possible out. Sucking cold oil up through the dipstick will leave sludge behind obviously.

I'm hoping that by always running Castrol Edge 5W-30 (VW 504 00 / 507 00), and changing properly every 7k miles, I'll avoid this issue. What has become evident from all these recent reports, is that if you switch off as soon as the oil light comes on, you stand a chance of getting away with it.

We should get a list together of all the people this has happened to, and try to spot a pattern maybe.

mine has been on fixed servicing from day one and has had it's oil changed every 10k and 5k since I've had. I'm hoping mine "should" be okay. I'm not planning on doing the oil pick-up but at least I know if the oil light comes on to kill the power and have it changed.

worrying.

Hard luck OP, hope it's not totally US.

What is the general census of opinion re. using (something like) a can of Wynns engine flush added to the old oil before draining it?

On my Octy 1.8t I have used fully synth 5/40,no engine flush & go 8k between changes, the oil is still quite clean after 8k btw

A while ago when I posted on here someone said to me that I should upgrade my oil pickup due to the mileage it had coverd. (143k)

I have a few questions which I hope people dont mind answering which can serve as information for everyone to use.

How much is an oil pickup pipe and where is the best place to buy them from?

How much time does it take todo?

What oil filter is the best for vRS?

What is the best oil?

What is the safest/most efficent way of draining the oil?

What else should be checked?

Right, go and buy a pick up from skoda £8 sum ali sealent and change it asap

mine packed up on track at coombe and i limped off.

left it to cool down then drove 25 miles home.

mine is fine!!!

it's worth the £20 to see if it 's ok.

change the pick up you might get away with it ( big maybe )

if your unlucky then turbo fecked

if really unlucky engine fecked

if your lucky all will be okay once you change the pickup pipe

READ THE THREAD I PUT UP GUYS THIS IS ABOUT THE 5TH ONE IN A MONTH LET THIS BE ANOTHER WARNING

General census is stay away from those oil flush and additive products as they can carry the crap around the engine and even make the senario worse. Modern oil's recomended for the VRS and VAG group already have cleaners and additives in them and should not need any more added. Replace oil when warm to flush the contents of the sump. Refill with some small amount oil without drain plug on, to flush any left over and that should be enough.

Regular changes with correct grade / quality oil is key. I do mine every 4k(lot's of short starts/stops and short journeys)

How much is an oil pickup pipe and where is the best place to buy them from?

- around £8 from main dealer / part number S06A115251 if i recall

How much time does it take todo?

- around 30min to 1 hour

What oil filter is the best for vRS?

- Check owners manaul to be sure , depends on you service type also.

This website is good

http://www.opieoils.co.uk/

Also main dealer / motor factors stock recomended oil and will advise also. like Euro car parts / GSF car parts.

What is the best oil?

- The recomended one :giggle: A good quality semi or fully synthetic oil of the correct grade

What is the safest/most efficent way of draining the oil?

- from the sump drain bolt, need to remove lower engine cover . Also always replace oil filter at same time.

What else should be checked?

- Sump bolt, replace that also if not replaced in some time so the seal is good.

oil filter, oil and sump plug around £29 from skoda, so you don't have to break the bank for genuine parts

if your from teesside google north east auto tech he is a local vag specialist has got me out of the **** a few times he has a garage in thornaby on princess street

im using carlube 10/40 in my vrs with 6 k oil changes

im using carlube 10/40 in my vrs with 6 k oil changes

This one? http://www.carlube.co.uk/index.cfm?product=66&product_title=10w40 Carlube Semi Synthetic

Because that oil doesn't meet VW specs. The carlube website also states that you should use 5W30 fully synth in your car.

Strangely I have found an appropriate oil on their website, but they don't list it under the car! This one: http://www.carlube.co.uk/index.cfm?product=178&product_title=5w30 Carlube Triple R Fully Synthetic VW meets the correct VW specs.

yea its the triple r one i thought as the car had done 155k i should be using 10/40 ??

I used 10w40 semi synthetic in my 125k mk1 octy vrs & changed it every 10k & never had a problem,as mine was done yearly or every 10k thats what i was told to use. :)

yea its the triple r one i thought as the car had done 155k i should be using 10/40 ??

The Carlube Triple R Fully Synth VW 5W30 meets VW specs 504.00/507.00

The Carlube Triple R Semi Synth 10W40 meets VW specs 500.00/505.00 (this is the one you use)

So you're probably fine then. I think the long life (20k) spec is 504.00/507.00 and the 10k spec is 500.00/505.00. Can someone confirm that?

I just find it really odd that the Carlube website fails to list either of those oils under our cars, and instead lists an oil that fails to meet any VW specs! Pretty poor really.

yea it is shoking tbh mate i just tell my sister i wanted that oil she said it does not list it for your car and i thought **** it i am right lol for once
