I do like the Sunbeam, interesting MR2 - how did the V6 come about?

Well I wanted something a bit different for my second MR2 that I owned, so I went for a conversion from a 1.8L four pot to a 3L V6, done fairly near where you are, at Woodsport in Durham.I had read about conversions on the Mk1 and 2 by them and decided to have them do similar to my car. It was the first MR2 Roadster in Europe to have this conversion. Great fun to drive! Nice soundtrack as well.

Seeing the Yetimania thread methinks my short list might be unusual as my Yeti arrives soon and well before I am 40!

1987 Skoda Estelle

1988 Skoda Rapide

1990 Vauxhall Astra 1.2

1995 Vauxhall Astra 1.4 Merit

2000 Volvo V40 2.O TSE

Nothing interesting:

1970 Bedford Beagle (HA Viva Estate)

1973 DAF 66 CVT automatic (remarkably good city car but with only 48 bhp not hot on motorways but would cruise at 70 OK)

? Vauxhall Viva, Yellow, gutless but large boot would take silver cross pram

1985 London Taxi (transport for the geriatrics)

? Citroen 2CV white, great fun

Vauxhall Astra Estate 1.6 (Brown) stolen & burnt out

? Citroen Dyane mud red/brown [emergency replacement for Vauxhall]

1992 Vauxhall Astra Estate 1.6 (Blue) used mainly by wife

? Vauxhall Vectra 2L diesel

? Vauxhall Agila 1L 3 pot - wind it up and let it go [transferred to wife]

2004 Ford Fusion AMT 1.4 - suicidal on roundabouts when it couldn't decide what gear to use.

2006 Skoda Octavia Estate 2L DSG - loved it but my legs didn't

(Current 2010 Skoda Yeti - So I started with a van shape and I've gone back to a van shape.)

Never did get that Reliant Scimitar!

I'd like to see purchase prices and a total against some of these long lists.

...and total of years covering the lot.

Hi Sanghar,

If I thought about the amount of money I had spent on cars, I'd probably have a heart attack. I have no idea and that's the way I like it :D

Years, now lets see, started riding bikes in 63, cars in 64 so what's that about 48 years. In that time I have had a license for everything apart from buses, no longer have my HGV but still got everything else. Know what, I still love driving, even in these days.

This is my list, which isn't strictly fair as the Yeti is the wifes, but never mind . . .

1974 Yamaha FS1E Dx

1976 Yamaha RD125 Dx

1970 Mini 850

1971 Escort 1300XL

1973 Escort 1300 Sport

1971 Rover V8 auto

1970 Mini Traveller

1965 Vauxhall Viva HA (had been my grandfarthers since new - I got it when it was 14 years old with 28K miles!)

1976 Cortina 1600GL

1981 Fiesta 1300 Ghia (Mum's from new)

1986 Fiesta 1400 Ghia (Mum's from new)

1986 Escort XR3i

1987 BMW 320i

1993 Mini Sprite (won it in a competition. Sold it soon after!)

1977 Kawasaki KH250

1996 Fiat Bravo 1.8HLX (first bought brand new car!)

1999 VW Golf GTI Turbo (new)

2003 Audi A4 2.4 Sport Cabriolet (new)

2002 Renault Scenic 1.8 Dynamique (wifes from new)

2007 Skoda Octavia TDi vRS Combi (new)

2010 Yeti 170 CR (wifes)

2010 Skoda Octavia CR vRS Combi (new)

Ladder not yet finished!

As this would replace my wife's car, the list would be:

2002 smart fortwo pure (2003-2007)

2006 smart fortwo passion (2007-2009)

2002 Audi A2 1.6FSI Sport (2009-present)

...SM, probably a 1.2TSI SE, sometime...

Mine is:

1988 Peugeot 205 1.4GR (1998-2000)

1999 Fiat Punto 60S 5dr (2000-2002)

2002 Fiat Punto JTD ELX 5dr (2002-2005)

2005 Audi A2 1.4TDI SE (2005-present)

1965 Preambulator (shared with brother) not entirely sure of the model but it was a soft top and occasionaly suffered from damp upholstery.

1969- 1975 approx:

an assortment of cars including the following:

DeTomaso Mangusta

Beach buggy

VW Varient

VW Beetle

Ford Capri MK1

Ford Escort Mexico

Mini Cooper

Aston Martin DB 5

Rolls Royce Silver Ghost

Landrover 110 Defender (Daktari replica with model Daktari and Clarence the cross eyed Lion)

All the above with the exception of the preambulator were bought in the origional car supermarket (Woolworths) and suffered numberous faults such as poor brakes, wheels falling off etc. It must also be said that without exception, standard factory fit wheel and tyres combinations were more suited to concrete and lino than to carpet. Despite numberous calls to Corgi, Dinky and Matchbox these problems were never resolved.

Because of these issues I took a sabbaticle from car ownership for a few years and instead tavelled by various means including among others a Leyland Leopard and 'Shank's mare'.

In 1986 I was again tempted back four wheeled transport.

1986: Fiat 127 Hatchback (1979 model) yellow (came with its own can of "Eazy start" and some character building electrics)

1987: Ford Escort 1.1 MK3 (1982 model) Sunburst red, (came with its own VV carb and auto choke for some more character building moments)

1991: Peugeot 205 (1989 model) wine metallic (my first and last Peugeot as the character building features were starting to wear thin)

1995: Nissan Micra (1987 model) white (older than the 205 but reliable)

1997: Nissan Micra Classic + (1996 model) white

From new:

1998: Nissan Micra S, wine metallic

2000: Toyota Yaris, metallic black (i put 110 miles on this and it never skipped a beat)

2003: Toyota Yaris, silver metallic (inferior build quality to my 2000 model)

2006: Ford Feista 1.25 Steel, black metallic

2009: Skoda Octavia 1.9 TDi Ellegance, Antracite Grey

2010: Skoda Yeti 2.0 TDi, Ambition, Rosso Brunello

Now where did I leave those Dinky's and their original boxes?

Another long(ish) list I'm afraid starting in 1974 and cheating slightly as I'll include my wives's cars; mostly in chronological order but E&OE.

I could work out exactly when and for how long I had each car, might even be able to remember most/all of the registration numbers, but can't be bothered.

All cars have (fortunately) been new or only a few years old on acquisition and most owned for around two years (ish). M/cycles were owned in addition to cars.

Here goes;-

Morris Marina 1.3 - drum brakes all round and copious understeer; fun!

Ford Escort 1.3 Pop Plus

Triumph TR6 Mk II - SAH tuned back to Mk I performance

Vauxhall Chevette 1.3 - sold to younger brother who overheated/seized the engine on M25.

Vauxhall Cavalier 1.9 - 100+ Octavo alloys Reg; PGM 51R

Yamaha DT 175 - sold to buy engagement ring

FIAT 127 (wife's)

FIAT X19

Lancia Beta HPE 1600

FIAT 127 GT (wife's)

Suzuki GS650 Katana - on getting divorced (kept the Beta HPE)!

Vauhall Nova 1.2 Swing

Vaxhall Nova 1.3SR

VW Golf 1.3 Formel E - the original stop/start eco car (perhaps) - 1st Company Car

VW Golf 1.3C

Vauxhall Astra 1.6GL

Vauxhall Astra 1.3 - Wife no 2's car; just celebrated 25th anniversary

Mazda 323F (wife's)

VW Golf 1.8GL

VW Golf 1.6 Driver (wife's) - nearly caused a divorce; but thankfully not.

Ford Mondeo Estate GLX 2.0 Auto

Opel Omega 2.5TD Auto Estate - chipped by VanAaken

Ford Escort Estate 1.8TD Ghia X - chipped by Van Aaken (wife's)

Skoda Fabia 1.4 - now owned by son

FIAT Doblo 1.9JTD (wife's) - she loved it and was great to go Karting in, Kart et al just went straight in the back.

Skoda Octavia vRS TDI

Skoda Roomster Scout 1.6Tip Auto (wife's)

Audi A5 Quattro S-Line 2.0L TDI - left me cold; car has no charisma - last Company Car

Looks good, I read somewhere the original 1.8 has the tendancy to cylinder wear. I take that the V6 is from a Camry, it must be quick, I think its the predecessor to the engine they fit to the Lotus Evora?

My ladder;

Hillman Imp (turquoise!)

Hillman Imp Californian (gold)

Clan Crusader (yellow, known as the banana by my family)

Fiat 131 (eventually oxidised)

Renault 5 TS

Alfasud Sprint Green Cloverleaf

Skoda 120 (head gasket failed spectacularly)

Escort 1.6D estate

Rover 214si

Honda Civic Aerodeck VTI

Renaultsport Clio 182 (first ever new car!)

Vauxhall Zafira SRi

Caterham 7 SV (forever!)

Skoda Yeti 170 (in a few weeks!)

Also use of a Maserati Biturbo and Alfa GTV whilst I was a student thanks to a very generous best friend!

Yes some of the pre 2003 cars suffered from oval bore syndrome due to piston ring design which was revised in 2002 to fix it. My car is a later one, but I wanted that sound of a six in there. Yes its a Camry unit, mine is distantly related to the 2GR-FE unit in the Evora. Yes it is pleasantly brisk!

Interesting... my list (a mix of privately owned & company cars) :

1972 Ford Escort Mk1

1975 Fiat 127

1982 VW Polo

1987 Lancia Delta

1993 Rover 414

1997 MGF

1998 Fiat Coupe

2001 VW Golf Mk 4

2005 BMW 120d

2007 BMW 320i conv

2011 Skoda Yeti

1987 - Chrysler Alpine 1442cc GLS (Dad's Hand-me-down)

1989 - Vauxhall Astra 1.3L (Crashed 3 times - none my fault, officer)

1990 - Peugeot 309 1.6 GLX

1994 - Peugeot 405 2.0 SRI

1997 - Vauxhall Calibra 2.0 16V (Why oh why?! Pretty on the outside, underneath an unreliable Cavalier with poor handling. Put me off Vauxhalls for life)

1999 - Subaru Impreza 2.0 Turbo AWD (owes me 6 points on my licence. Still own. Did 80 miles in 2010 :( )

2000 - Peugeot 405 2.0 Executive Automatic (Scooby not particularly practical or economical for long commutes - and that's when petrol was 60p/litre...!)

2005 - Renault Laguna 2.2DCi Dynamique (Dull, but surprisingly reliable until it needed a new clutch and flywheel)

2010 - Skoda Yeti 2.0 TDI 170 Elegance

I had the loan of an Impreza Turbo for a few months around the same time... wasn't used to driving anything as fast and got done by the same camera (top of Scotts Hill in Rickmansworth) twice in less than 3 months... d'oh!!!

Ok, this could get boring eventually, but it has been quite fun to recall the past!

1967 Ford 307E Van re-wired by me after a fire (previous owner)

1971 Vauxhall HA Viva (had to re-build the gearbox)

1978 Mini Countryman (rusted apart at the sub frame mounting)

1980 Renault 5 (timing chain slipper wore badly, blew out of its hole, chain jumped, disaster. Engine out to repair; took all weekend. Found out afterwards I could have zipgunned out the front bulkhead, repaired from inside with engine intact, then MIG'd the bulkhead back in!)

2010 Skoda Yeti 140 TDI Experience 4x4

Not quite sure what the next one will be, love the Yeti, but I would love to have a motorcycle and maybe a cheaper car again sometime in the future. A Triumph 675 Daytona would suit me just fine, but I'm not sure if the Triumphs are reliable enough just yet?

My list:

2000 Suzuki SV 650s

snap, only mine was a 1999 model, one of the first in the UK.

A Triumph 675 Daytona would suit me just fine, but I'm not sure if the Triumphs are reliable enough just yet?

Well my 1992 Trident 900 (8 years old when I bought it) and 1996 Sprint 900 (7 years old when I bought it) were 100% reliable.

Apart from the sprag clutch which went on the sprint 900, which was a known problem and not sorted (unfortunately) before I bought it.

The length of these lists tells you as much about the age of contributors as anything else I suspect...

1969 Honda CD175 (you have to start somewhere)

1971 Ducati 350

1974 Honda CB350K4 (my very first new vehicle, what a joy)

1976 BMW 75/6 (Don't buy accident damaged vehicle and expect flawless reliability!!!)

1978 Honda CX500 (Brilliant but slightly flawed)

1963 (I think) Morris Minor (Red leather upholstery and a switch for a clutch but it did get me in to 4 wheels)

1976 Ford Escort Popular 1100 White. What a heap of *****, door skins flapping at 3 years old.

1977 BMW R60/7 economical, reliable and DULL

1982 Honda CX 500B (Still brilliant and now reliable. 13 years owned and let me ride really cheaply whilst bringing up my young family.)

1985 FIAT Uno 45. My first new car. Affordable, amazing amount of room and a joy to drive with an engine that just loved to rev and rev. Owned 15 years and drove it to the scrap yard :-(

1989 Ford Granada 2.0 GL Auto. A 100,000 mile old dog but what a lovely comfortable old pair of slippers.

1985 Honda XBR500 (A lovely toy)

1988 BMW K75s (The bike I'd have loved to have had ten years earlier)

1996 Ford Mondeo 1.8 GLX Auto. How can a nearly new up-to-the-minute car be less refine and less economical than the old dog above?

1990? Honda CBR600FL (Way too much performance for the road)

1995 BMW R850r (The most beautiful blend of torque, refined power, comfort and performance. Another long relationship - 10 years)

2001 FIAT Multipla 1.6 Ex-demo. Owned 10 years and covered 120,000 miles without a glitch. A fantastic car in so many ways.

2006 BMW R1200GS All the better to tour on

2006 Ducati S2R 800 Just to play on

2009 BMW R1200GS My first new motorcycle for over 20 years and Because She Who Must Be Obeyed said yes!

2010 Skoda Yeti 1.2 TSI DSG I've never bought a car by deciding on a gearbox and then trying to find a car to fit around it before. 1 month and a 1000 miles done.

1979 Renault 18 (1st car while a student, unreliable, was probably a death trap waiting to happen)

1987 Ford Escort 1.4L (OK but dull)

1989 VW Jetta GTI (great if you wanted a quick car but not to appear to be a boy racer)

1995 Scooby (Wow - just watch that petrol guage needle move, could go round corners fater than it was safe to do so, had to go when SWMBO got pregnant as ride a bit firm)

1998 Subaru Legacy estate (reliable, comfortable and roomy but still fairly high petrol consumption)

2003 Octavia 1.9 TDI estate (great reliable car, kept for 7 years as so good - only just gone and will probably miss the big boot )

2005 Fiesta 1.25 (SWMBO's - fine car though a bit underpowered)

2005 Fiat Multipla JTD (SWMBO's -OK, nice ride height, great for carry 6 in lots of space a bit wide for parking spaces etc, not sure if it would be reliable kept longer term - had EGR valve problem at only 14K)

2007 Ford Fusion 1.4 diesel (SWMBO's - OK , reliable but dull, defrosting front windscreen great)

2010 Toyota Yaris (SWMBO's- OK, very economical for a petrol car, low road tax, 5 yr guarantee -why can't Skoda do that given they are pretty reliable?- has a very bouncy ride if road isn't smooth, stupid rear parcel cover extensions)

No chance of remembering the years, but I think I can just about remember the vehicles and sequence:

Puch Moped

Puch 125cc .

Suzuki GT380

Honda CB750

Then I got tired of cold and wet winters.

Triumph 1300

Morris Marina 1.8TC

Ford Fiesta 1.3 Ghia

Fiat Panda

Fiat Uno 55

Fiat Regata 1.6

Fiat Uno Turbo

Fiat Uno Turbo (2)

Rover 216

VW Scirocco 1.6

VW Golf GTI Mk2

VW Golf GTI Mk2 16v

BMW 323

VW Golf Mk3 VR6

VW Passat Estate PD 1.9 TDI

Subaru Forester 4x4 (the worst car I've ever owned - always breaking down)

Audi A4 Avant PD 2.0 TDI

Volvo V50 2.0D

Skoda Yeti Elegance 4x4 CR170 TDI

Overlapping with the last 5 of those I've had a little collection of 'classics'; an Austin Healey Sprite with a 2.0 litre Alfa Romeo twin cam fitted, an MGB GT, and currently a 1971 MGB Roadster, with a 3.5 litre V8 Rover engine and gearbox (5spd) conversion.
