Advanced Motorist (Driver) & Insurance

Featured Replies

I'm an advanced driver and about to join the institute of advanced motorists (I'm exempt from taking the tests). I've not yet found an insurance company that takes into account my driving qualifications  .

Is there such a thing? Do they actually give discount for Advanced Drivers and IAM drivers? And finally, what kind of discount could I expect?

Welcome to the IAM!

I've been a member for many years, but although there are a few insurance companies willing to give discounts to IAM members (they advertise in the IAM magazine but I haven't got a handy copy at the moment) I've always shopped around and found cheaper quotes elsewhere based on my NCD.

Elephant and Admiral are 2 that discount based on IAM. My cheapest quote by far was with IAM themselves. IAM Surety is the name and they were £120 cheaper than nearest quote which was More Than.

They are also cheap for partners/wives/husbands too as the g/f saved £150 over her cheapest quote

The IAM have their own insurance scheme (Surety) which is run through Adelaide Insurance Services on 0845 603 1355.

I've been with the IAM for 20 plus years (did not need to take the test also), and found that very few companies offer any discount although it does no harm to mention it when getting any quote.

I've never used the IAM scheme as we use Admiral for their multi car policy.

I'm getting ready to take the test.

I used Skoda insurance as they were the cheapest for me, even when they added 10% on for my remap....

All boils down to statistics, your age, type of vehicle and age, costs of parts, any accidents **whether your fault or not, any convictions.

Additional alarms, where vehicle kept overnight, where you live, any driving additional abilities may or may not, be asked for.

** Did you know if you have had a non-fault reported accident, that stastically you are more likely to have another accident!!

and despite it not being your fault, I wouldnt be surprised if the insurance companies increase their premium - just in case...

Yep! they load you. As I know someone in a car insurance claim dept.

They also pass this info on between themselves, so beware telling porkies.

After I got my IAM licence at the age of 17 I phoned Surety who then told me I wasn't eligible for discount until I was 19! It turns out the "high ups" at the IAM opted for cheaper quotes from Surety if they made under 19's excempt from the discount scheme (something they didn't publicise), When I took out my policy for my fabia vrs with Admiral I made a point of mentioning to them on the phone I had my IAM licence which got me £30 back, not much but better than nothing, hopefully my renewal when its due should be more reasonable since i'll be 19 and eligible for the IAM discount. Hope this helps somewhat

I've been a member of the IAM for several years now too. At the start Adelaide couldn't cover me on seemingly low insurance group cars (525i), but of late they've been very competitive. They'll beat any price by 10%.

I am an advanced driver and insurance companies don't care. They see it as someone who is likely to cause more risks to people who are not advanced drivers. Get more discount through no claims. HOWEVER It is really not worth anything until god bless you have to make a claim then you stand in a really good position and they will listen to you and take yourside, and nine times out of ten you will win.

Have you tried getting a quite through the IAM Surety scheme?!

I'd be interested to see how this turns out tbh.

My insurance is due next month so I'll be shopping round soon and will report back.

Intresting to read this, my wife has decided to start out doing the advanced driving with the IAM (first drive today) so if she passes then we will be looking at insurance that offers a discount when it comes to renewal time.

In my experience - IAM Surety will be the cheapest by far and offer more for your money like cover abroad.

Anyone got any experience of insurance having done RoSPA courses?

I've just renewed our car insurance today-found IAM surety to offer the best deal.

I've insured my Yeti and SWMBO Polo, fully comp with protected no claims for just under £350.

Hi my name is Alan Clarke I am a full Member of the Institute of Advanced Motorists.

Please could you advise me how are you exempt from taking an Advanced Driving Test? or have you already passed an Advanced Driving Test?

In answer to your question I recommend IAM Surety. They have been set up to provide discount for Advanced Motorists.

I have been battling for 20 years with Insurance Companies including:

Direct Line, Churchill, Cornhill, AXA, Hastings Direct, AA, Norwich Union, Liverpool Victoria.

It seems that Insurance Companies are all too happy to insure drivers and give them discount with no Advanced or professional qualification.

Hi my name is Alan Clarke I am a full Member of the Institute of Advanced Motorists. 22 Years

I have been driving since 1982 and took the Advanced Driving Test in 1988. I have also worked part time as a Chauffeur.

I have been working in the Motor Trade for 20 years. During this time I have seen cars so badly mangled that i cannot recognise them.

I am also exempt from taking the test but I am a member of IAM.

Its because of my job I am qualified IAM

Adelaide Surety will beat your best quote by 10% if a member of the IAM.

I think that the OP means that he has passed an advanced driving test through his work.

I passed my Police advanced driving , class 1 back in 1990, and that was my qualification to become an IAM member.

Question - do you know what their approach/attitude to car modifcation is?

I assumed it would be an issue and didn't contact them at my last renewal point.

My car is lowered and has Audi wheels. Neither affected my premium.
