Really tempted to buy new VRS at 19

Featured Replies

Hi im 19, male and have looked into buyin one of these new.

With the options of green rallye, with black roof and black alloys i have found a quote online, and check with the dealer ship for a price of £13,555 OTR. Via GMPdrivercare.co.uk and allelectric.co.uk. Standard OTR price £12,834.

Also the biggest killer for a driver of my age is insurance, and have check with admerial that i can get 10 months for £1800 and 12 months for £2000.

Have you got any suggestion on this car? (maybe some optional extras that are worth it?).

P.S. does any1 know if the rallye green is like ford focus rs green or more sirocco green?

On a side note does any1 know or think gap insurance is worth it? costin around £100~£200 (£400 from skoda dealer)

As i would be spending £13,555, if i got a return to invoice then that wouldn't cover the cost of replacing it new as the VAT price would be much higher. And if i was to get car replacement policy, how is this any different from fully comp insurance (compulsory) road insurance for a car? as i expect them to find a car of same spec for the same price?

Cheers max.

some mini reviews and pics in here Review and photo thread

Your best bet is to go to a dealers with a view to buying, theyll let you take one out for a drive and they should have a few in with some different options that you can check out and see. Im 19 and have the mk1 vrs se, I love it and insurance is £1080 with admiral multicar.

We will have our vRS on the road to drive in a week or so if you want to take it for a spin?

£2000 doesn't sound too bad, what excess does that have?

  • Author

um well i have firstly gone through compare the market.. and got a price of £1860.75 ... which had only £50 excess. And rang up admiral and they couldn't find this deal on their database, but i did the quote through their website and got £1800 for 10 months, with an excess of £350 and with a £250 for young drivers. So if i were to crunch it it would be £600 but if my named driver (mum) was to crunch it the it would be £350).

£2000 is very good for a car that powerful. The average is £2300 for people aged between 17-22 so I'd say you got a good deal there

Like others have said, have a good look round the forums, the review thread at the top will help you big time as will all the people who've made threads for there new vRS.

P.S. does any1 know if the rallye green is like ford focus rs green or more sirocco green?

Guy near to me has a Focus RS in green and mine's in green too. So closer to Focus RS I'd say. Only ever seen one Scirocco in green on the road and it went past me quite quickly in the other direction so can't say.

I will be very surprised if you get it this side of £3000,you are only 19 get a smaller car save your money and get to 21-25 then the insurance would be fine:thumbup:

I have the new VRS and I am 20.

Insurance was 'reasonable' (I do not like to divulge into exact figures).

You should also ask yourself if you can afford the fuel bill (not saying you can't, just worth a check), it was definitely a shock for me going from a 1.0 Yaris to the VRS in fuel terms.

The car itself is brilliant. Seriously, fantastic car. I never enjoyed driving so much as I do with the new VRS.

Ring up Skoda, book a test drive and see what you think for yourself.

P.S. I have a Red VRS but saw a Rallye Green VRS in the flesh and it looked very nice

Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks for the info all! stil v. interested, going for a testdrive on today or tomorrow with the idea of puttin the £500 deposit down.

P.S. stu u dont have to expose your exact figures, but it would be handy to know if u beat my insurance quote and by 'much' or 'not alot'.

Cheers once again Max.

For a 19 yo is GAP worth it on a grp 27 car

In the first 6 months at least most insurers will give back a new car, but after that the offers will drop by quite a lge chunk. (I presume this is the case even with young drivers)

So given the statistics (even just looking on Brisky) at the number of mk1 vRS written off by 'young/ inexperienced' drivers I would say it was deffo worth it.

As to the value, if your dealer is savvy he will write you a policy for the list price and not the price you have paid.

hth

We have a demo vRS bit of a trip over to Worcester mind lol

Save some cash and buy my Boca ;)

I'm 21 bought one last Saturday . Admiral was the cheapest insurance by a mile. My existing company (rac) were quoting 3000 but admiral was 812. Big difference.

Im 21 ive ordered my vrs and been quoted £837 a year with 3 years no claims which i think is awesome as it was costing me £802 a year for my 1.4 polo se 85 hp if you want decent power at 19 this is definately the car. I had the 20v polo before my current polo and was costing me nearly 3 grand.

Also with the auto i dont think the fuel bill will be so bad as it may teach you how to drive it more economically, use the trip computer and monitor the instant fuel economy and you can really up your average.

GAP is a must as well no matter what type you get as it will reduce the loss you dont want to finance something and blitz a lot of money for one mistake. And the dealer pays £250 on there own cars so haggle them down as close as you can to this price i got mine for £275.

have fun if you decide to get one though

I get around 30mpg from mine, little more on a run. Have got 42mpg driving like a saint before now..lol

I'm quite surprised by the amount of 'young-uns', as you older lot would call us, that have bought a new vRS. Seems Skoda have done quite well at getting this car to a young audience if these forums are anything to go by

I'd like to see a table of all the 1.4 TSI cars and maybe a few other hot hatches such as the Clio, Cooper S etc and see what the insurance for each comes out at. Have a feeling vRS might win by a clear margin from the Clio and the Corsa VXR.

GAP Insurance is worth it Max. Just don't get it from the dealer as they'll charge you double the price.

If you're fine with the DSG gearbox, and again from what I can tell, us 'young-uns' seem to like it a lot more (playstation generation you see...:dull:), you'll be buying it. :p

I've had my Red VRS 2 for three weeks and it goes great! I am 57 and still heavily involved with motorsport so not a crinckly (I hope)

Upside from the VRS 1 is much more civilised interior better seats, more room, better handling (old un bit heavy on the front), downside is autobox v clever but not as much fun, and loss of awesome fuel economy - my old car (for sale on this site at £4,800) bought from new and tuned by Angel, is very nearly as quick and gave 60+mpg on any sort of run and 52+ on motorway making good progress.

Maybe you should look at the diesel and pocket the £9k and cheaper insurance??

I really wanted the new 2ltr 170bhp diesel amd six speed manual, which would also have been about £1,500 cheaper but you can't have it all.

BTW I bought an exdemo for £12.600 with rearparking sensors, climate control, cruise control, glasses holder, wheel with controls, phone kit, diff rims - that is about a £1k of extras?

Happy driving!

Uncle Pete

You have a PM mate.

Was looking at getting same as yourself. Green with black combo! I've just turned 20 last month and was quoted 750 quid insurance fully comp from Admiral! Thats with my folks on it as that takes it down a couple of hundred. I keep telling my mates (not all that clued up on cars to be fair) that I'm looking at a 1.4 litre Skoda and they keep laughing. Work mates as well. It'll be flipping awesome to see there faces when they get inside it! :D :D :D

The above all sounds way too familiar for me.

Trust me mate, the laughs are short lived.

You will be the one laughing ;)

Work mates as well.

Actually, I can't say the same here fortunately, I work with the 'older generation' mainly, and a lot of them have VWs / Skodas / etc, and even a few with the Scirocco with the same(ish) engine, so they all know it makes sense!

I do have a couple that understand what I'm getting at. Others are on the "Oh dear...your buying a skoda?" bandwagon. I love it though. I lap it up! :D

Likewise mate ;)

Come and join the Skoda darkside!

To the OP, I would say, dont take it for a test drive unless you figure out you can afford it... If you drive it, you will buy. ;o)

I went from a 1.2 clio to a Clio sport 172, purely from taking one for a test drive, it didnt matter how much I had to pay, once you put your foot on the loud pedal something will click in your brain saying MY PRECIOUS I MUST HAVES IT! Or is that just me? hehe

To all you Young'uns getting quotes of £8-900!! you must live in a good area? Im 33 and live in liverpool (Let the jokes begin), my best quote with 16 years no claims has been £850.

Man I wish I could have afforded a £14k car, £200ish/month insurance and heavy fuel and running costs when I was 19. It kind of blows my mind a bit.....when I was 19 I was driving round in a 6 year old Fiat Uno 1.0 with the biggest dent in the back door you have ever seen (I didnt do it, it came like it) and did about 45K miles in it, cooking a head gasket once on the way. Was poo but being young I liked it.

I got into that from a 1988 Lancia Y10 with more rust than Titanic, bad electrics and not far short of 100K on the clock......my brother had it for years and had killed it once over already. It's only redeeming features were that it had (semi working) central locking, electric windows and an alcantara dashboard......was still embarrasing as hell though!!

In fact pretty much all my friends had crap cars....was the way back then. Best car one of my mates had was a Nova 1.3 SR, did 120 (at a push) but didnt stop or steer...at all really! It had a Calibra 16v steering wheel and a big sound system too which made it all the cooler to us. Only my friends with minted parents had new cars (but they were usually slower or more embarrasing than mine if thats possible!) or they drove their mums cars. How it would seem that things have changed!

Don't get me wrong I think its great that young people are finding themselves in the market to buy new cars, they are so much safer nowadays such actions probably save a lot of live. However I do feel a vRS at 19 is perhaps a bit overkill, particularly if your having to sell your arms and legs just to insure the thing. Its also not worth putting a great big HP/PCP noose around your neck that that age unless you can definitely afford it one way or another. My big fear would be crashing it, is a big responsibility having a 140mph car and trying to drive it sensibly even at my age.

If I were 19 i'd be made up with any Fabia (the Monte Carlo would be good - looks the part and would be a hell of a lot cheaper), Polo Moda or a new Corsa SXi/SRi, something new and a bit funky but wont break the bank. Some of the options there are fairly pokey too. I'd give it some serious thought before making the plunge.

fair call pipsyp, but the biggest killer at my age, is the insurance, and my logic is that its going to cost me a fair bit of money what ever i drive... it cost me 1.3k to insure a citroen saxo 1.1litre, so in my head paying ~£2000 for a BRAND NEW fabia VRS, which as we all know are fast, reliable, warranty e.t.c.

As my parents are pointing out to me, the cost is almost cleaning me out with the car + insurance, so can the extra that i have afford the maintenance of keeping the car on the road...

Cheers on your views

Max

Whatever you decide, good luck with it and let us know how you get on.
