T'internet's buggered!

Featured Replies

Right, I'm on Blueyonder broadband pauper's version (256K).

Everytime I click on the Blueyonder icon, the Internet explorer program starts then the message "This page cannot be displayed" comes up with advice on how to remedy the problem.

I tried the internet Explorer icon : same

Rang blueyonder, they checked the connection, OK then said it was a software problem. the guy on the phone told me to go into DOS and run the command "netstat -a" and it came up with about 100 spyware programs running on the system.

reinstalled Blueyonder internet package : same.

ran Spybot, 24 threats removed.

ran Ad Aware, 2 threats removed

ran Microsoft antispyware, no threats detected.

ran Norton antivirus, 2 removed, 1 file failed to delete.

Did the netstat thing again, still about 75 programs running.

Still can't access internet the normal way.

Went into MSN messenger and connected to internet via MSN.com Hooray! Everytime I go onto a site where a seperate screen pops up, such as clicking on a link, "This page cannot be displayed". Boo!

Went to Microsoft downloads to get Internet explorer to reinstall but this requires a pop up page which will not display.

Got mad and wiped off Kazaa and Limewire as they thrive on spyware, no change.

HEEEEEEEEEEEEEELP!!!

not your day then?

Format C:

It will be much quicker and less stressful than trying to fix the problem.

Just back everything up and re-install

if on xp try a system restore to a day you know it was working...might help...might not

Is there a quick way of backing all the content of the 'puter, or do you have to go through them one by one?

PDTI, If that's Rob, hope you're feeling better. If it's Lorna, Quick! Charmed is on Living TV!

:iagree: Then I would use Opera/Firefox as a browser when you've re-installed Windows. You should be less of a target then. Do you have any firewall software installed? I'd recommend using something like Sygate Personal Firewall, ZoneAlarm or something similar, which should, if setup correctly, stop nasties getting in and opening up ports; the result of which you've seen through the netstat command.

Hope this helps. Update us on how you get on.

Steve

Not EVERYTHING reported by netstat will be spyware or malicious.

Second others' thoughts about a firewall especially for broadband connection. A hardware firewall is best, but if you don't want to splash out on one, get Zone Alarm, or if you have XP, turn on the XP firewall as a minimum.

Obviously some things are working or you wouldn't be posting on here. If you want to PM me, I'll be happy to help with firewalls etc.

My parent-in-laws PC was doing this recently. Adaware 6 fixed it so it could be spyware related. Tell you somthing just removing Kazaa by uninstalling it in control panel is not enough, it actually needs a special tool to get rid of it fully. Found this out to my cost after my wife installed Kazaa on boxing day.

I've just spent the past three hours trying to fix the chuffing PC.

I've worked out that if I turn off the Norton Firewall, then I can access pages on the net. I've tried configuring it to a lesser level, but it seems it's either off or nothing.

Now I'm getting loads of messages saying an Intrusion has been blocked, so to speak!

I'll try the XP Firewall. Thanks for the advice Briskodians....

If norton is blocking access to the net on an application basis, you could try downloading / installing Firefox as an alternative browser. Then if firefox works but IE doesn't, it would point to IE being the problem.

Just got Zone Alarm from Download.com, working nicely!

I'm going for Firefox now, thanks chaps.....

just something to try..

can you set up a new user profile and log in... then try to use IE with that profile.

i have a similar problem where firefox works fine, but ie refuses to display pages..... but all is fine in a different profile.

I've not tried that. I'm ****ed off with Microsoft and their easily attacked software at the minute so I think I'll be sticking with Firefox.... :)
