Turbo blew same week as remap? only 57k:(

Featured Replies

As the title says, got my car remapped from 145.9bhp standard, to 169.8bhp/ 266.9lbft, and within a week the turbo has blew.

Car has only done 57k, and has full service history, i have owned the car since 22k and in my time its never been thrashed from cold. Is it just unfortunate, or am I right to think its linked to the remap??

Remaped Wednesday, on Friday I had a engine management light come on after a 200mile journey, was off again on Saturday and went bang on Sunday.

If its remap related is their anything i can even do?? Obviously I can get them to take it off, but they are known as the best diesel tuners in this country (N.Ireland)their for have nowhere else to remap the car..

Also i have no idea where or what to look for another turbo, engine code is BLT, what options are they for a uprated turbo??

Appreciate any help as I have no clue as what to do:S

Thanks

Speak to whoever mapped it and see what they say.

Lots of things can cause turbos to go - poor oil supply etc.

Where there any warning signs?

What was the error code from the EML?

If it was turbo overboost then your turbo was probably on its way out anyway and it has nothing to do with the remap.

If you went to a reputable company then there`s no reason to think the two are linked tbh. My mates turbo went at 40 odd thousand, was just bad luck.

As for uprated ones, PD150? Hybrid 150? or just a replacement standard turbo?

Turbo blew accelerating around 3k in second gear.

I never got a chance to check the code, as it was gone on Saturday. Warning signs other than the EML were it was restricted to around 3.5k revs earlier on Sunday, but it was fine when i got in the car again in the evening.

I am going to ring the company tomorrow as i only found out about the turbo tonight, but wanted to know what you guys thought. Just hoping its just the turbo tbh.

That makes me feel not so bad lol.. Think ill go for a PD150, will any PD150 turbo fit?? Whats the difference in the hybrid??

A standard PD150 turbo is good for 190ish bhp. Might be worth getting even if you only plan to leave it running a remap, since it`ll be a bit stronger. A hybrid, is the same turbo with uprated internals, some can cope with 240+bhp.

The 150 comes on the pd150 golf, leon, and pd160 ibiza cupra and some others, but they are the main ones.

Matt

Yes unfortunately the standard kkk turbo can be quite poor, with some on standard cars only lasting 30k it's mainly caused by vnt sticking and causing an overboost

Think a 150 would be the best idea, are all the 150 cars you listed the exact same 150 turbo, that will fit my BLT engine fine?? Are they garrett or kkk? Or does it very??

I see, would a remap increase the chances of the vnt sticking??

Thanks for the help:D

the pd150 off a golf will be a garrett, im faaaaairly sure it will be a garret off a cupra 160 too but not entirely sure as seat run kkk like skoda

There's a pd150 turbo for sale in the for sale section on here

Seen that already, thanks:D

PD150 Bora and Golf Mk4, plus the Ibiza PD160 all use the same Garrett unit. Model is GT1749VB. If it's from a Bora/Golf the housing will need rotated as it's fitted slightly different on a Fabia.

Are you 100% sure it's not just blown a hose off? Might be worth checking just in case if you haven't already.

Thanks for that. Does this mean the cars you listed all have the same BLT engine code as mine?? Or does engine code matter?? Is their much work in rotating it??

Also, could it be possible to Hybrid my turbo?? When hybriding a turbo does it matter if its been blown or not??

Sure its been blown, possibly screwed the engine too so my mechanic says.. But he wont know for sure until the turbos stripped off it..

no different engine code, different cam's etc...

i know the mk4 golf tdi 150 is an ARL engine code...

don't think many of the companys do exchange turbo's anymore... or if they'd do a 130..?

A few will do exchanges still. And the different engine code in this case doesn't matter.

But to be honest, I'd buy the one currently on sale in the Classifieds on here emoticon-0148-yes.gif

do you not have to put an egr delete pipe on the car if pd150 turbo is used? i was under the impression the egr systems are different on pd130, pd150?

nah

standard egr can be used

You'd be better off with an EGR delete pipe anyway. But to answer the question - no, it's not compulsory......

Would hybridin my current turbo be much more than the 500 he is looking?? And then would it not be as good as a pd150??

Thanks for all the help guys:D

would be around the same...

why not buy the pd150 then sell yours for £200?

then its only an outlay of £300...

tbh you need to phone CR turbo's / turbo teknics etc and get a price... no good asking us

Don't worry mate no one has had luck like mine.

Had the car mapped and it blew up on the test drive. Gave the garage a week to fix it, left the map on. Blew the new turbo again on the test drive. I now have a pd150 turbo but running a standard map.

You will need a custom map if running the pd150 turbo as they internally spool up slower than the pd130 and in generally run differently. My car is very different with the pd150 turbo.

Also when getting a bigger turbo consider what else you need. Bigger turbo generally needs a bigger intercooler. But the main killer is running over 300ftt you need an uprated Clutch which will cost about £800 minimum.

People seem to miss these details out when reccomending all these massive power upgrades!

Oh and turboactive still do exchange ;)

About £3k including a Hybrid PD150 assuming you get the brakes uprated to 312mms at the same time. All of it can be done a lot cheaper if you can find the bits second hand.

If you can afford it then its money well spent as the car is completely transformed when done yet looks completely stock (bar a line of silver where the top of the SS FMIC is visible through the front grill). Doesn't stop me wanting (much) more power when funds allow.

Have you even read the thread?! Were not all telling him to get a 150 then tune it, just to get it for the extra strength over a 130.
