Hybrid MPG, Boost Leaks, etc...

Featured Replies

I'm convinced I have a little boost leak. Is there any garage local to Kent that can test for boost leaks with a smoke test or whatever? I can hear a little hissing noise that wasn't there when I picked the car up from Unit 18 so I think something has slightly come loose.

If I have a boost leak, would this cause my MPG to be worse and would it cause it to smoke more?

I seem to be getting a bad MPG and it's smoking more than I remember when I first picked it up. It may all be in my head but the car seems slower too (although it's probably me just getting used to it).

I struggle to get more than 35mpg average over a tank driving around town and on motorways with a mixture of driving (majority of it is being very sensible). I seem to remember getting over 45mpg before the hybrid and never remembered my friends MPG being this bad. I can very easily go for a spirited drive and average under 20mpg and it's got me worrying a bit.

Mines was a hybrid and my mates was remapped

On a 300 mile plus trip at 70mph with cruise control on the mapped car got 51mpg.... The hybrid got 53mpg so was getting better economy

I put this down to the bigger turbo spooling less to maintain speed

You should be getting better mpg than standard... But ive seen your posts and the fact tires last 5k so im thinking the car does a fair few laps of maccy d's

Why don't you have a bash at it yourself? Its pretty simple? Maybe its about time to get hands on with the car rather as splashing cash left right and centre

Just my 2p worrh

Also with a hissing sound i think its a burst pipe

I bet my bottom dollar the rubber pipe off the turbo has worn through on the driveshaft

;)

Torq head screwdriver (can't remb size) whack off the under tray 10 screws I think and have a look.

T25 :)

had to remove what was left of mine laast week :p

I keep getting boost leaks, but seems to be down to the oem pipes from the turbo to the forge piping.

So i'm going to replace that.

I got them refitted last week, and the car didnt smoke at all, and over a gentle 22 mile drive i averaged 72mpg :D

Now its come away slightly again, and i'm only averaging mid 50's at most, and a fair bit of smoke.

I think it was this very pipe responsible for the whacking great boost leak I had when running my standard turbo. Ben from Shark Performance found a considerable hole in it, which inevitably contributed/caused turbo failiure due to overboost. If it is this pipe, its about £110 from Skoda.

Out of interest Clarkey, whats your fuel figures like ?

As i'm running your base map, but tweaked to the max lol

+ 7 million annoys me when people think they know a lot when they have never lifted a finger. My mates the same. I fixed my car at the weekend when my boost pipe popped off n he was like how you done that. I justnsaid I'm not scared to try.

Yes you are and I'm mildly jealous :)

As with anything, MPG return figures depend entirely on how I drive. On a sensible motorway jouney of 70 miles, I tend to average around 50+ MPG, with the highest being around 57MPG. However, the same journey can easily be reduced to 45MPG if I drive less conservatively.

Rough returns from a fully brimmed tank are always over 500 miles, averaging at 550 I'd say.

How long a journey are you doing? I notice that my MPG starts off awful from cold but after 10/12 miles its where it should be.

Hands on with what? A boost pipe hasn't come off, it's a little hist from somewhere under load and I can't hear where from...

Im not sure mate but if you fuel economy is down and the car smokes more then the boost leak must be after the MAF/air flow meter. This would cause the motor to run rich as the MAF is fueling for a higher volume of air than what is getting into the motor as some air is escaping from the leak.

Pop the bumper off and Check all the worm clamps on you boost pipes.

Hope you fix it mate.

Exactly which is why i said check the pipe off the turbo my guess its rubbed on the driveshaft... Common problem with the ss boost pipe kit large samco coupler needs a good inch taken off it

Yup, its way too long as supplied.

I trimmed mine down before fitting too.

My leaks are coming from the joins on the 2 remaining oem pipes.

in fairness to xa0sx, all the pipework was fitted by Unit 18 - I would have thought Ali would be aware any 'common problems' associated with the pipework....

Luke, I suggest that you mention it to Sean at AmD on Sunday - he may be able check it over for any obvious issues on the day.

35mpg is bad. I get 45 without trying........... How many miles to a tank, do you get?

I know MAF's on Rover diesel engines affect economy when ******, maybe it's the same case here?

fact is no matter who fitted it, there is that many joins in that intercooler pipe work, and the car is probably boosting over 20psi, its very easy for it to blow a pipe off or something similar, if i remember you used all micolor clamps so doubt its that, id look more towards the lower end like jase said where it joins the standard bit, 2 minute job with a trolley jack and the above mentioned torx screwdriver :)
