Diesel fuel economy

It is all wishful thinking and guesswork at best as posts #17 & #19 say. The inaccuracies in any vehicle measuring system using rubber tyres are well known, it makes us feel good though.

I like wishful thinking! Just done a round trip from Kent to Stoneleigh, Warwicks, mostly on cruise contro, 64mpg there, 66.5 back - even taking into account the optimism of the MFD, thats not bad! Cruise was set at 2100rpm

Well, im off on a 1500 mile round trip to the alps in a few weeks time, Im hopeing i get more than 40mpg!

Car will be loaded with luggage and 4 people.

Ill update here after.

I love the fact my Greenline showed me tank average (display number 2 on the MFD) of 58mpg - that's all sorts of driving styles, including a proper rant to the local Skoda dealer to test a Yeti.

I get scared by the posts from CR170 owners and Yeti owners saying they get mid-30s from their cars - that's almost as bad as a Range Rover diesel!!

As for the Octavia being lighter than the Superb - not much.

As for the inaccuracies of instruments etc, it's a constant (or pretty much so) - the tyres will not wear appreciably over 5000 miles, your speedo and MFD will not read by a different inaccuracy, so once measured on MFD and for real with brim to brim, you should know the difference between the 2 - I haven't done it yet (done 13k in the Superb Greenline).

I thought I would miss the 140bhp I had in my Octavia before, when shifting to the Superb Greenline, but the economy makes up for it. What's scary is I had a 1.4TSI on order, but they bumped me back and I got the Greenline as a comparable model!! Can't see the 1.4 TSI (most car mags' top choice) returning more than 40mpg...

Really? I can't say I've seen a magazine prefer a petrol model. Most of the ones I've seen prefer the diesels.

What Car and other big mags always put their "Top Choice" and the 1.4TSI is it for the Superb. The 1.2 TSI is the Yeti of choice. Sometimes I am convinced they do it as it's the cheapest model. Then when it comes to group tests, they have to pick the VW or Audi equivalent (which are inferior in some ways IMO), rather than the Skoda "budget brand" model.

Well, im in the alps and mpg isnt looking good.

700 miles into my journey and the MFD is reading 48mpg, a slight improvement but I was expeccting better based on other peoples experiences.

Tyre pressures are correct for the load, 95% empty french motorways doing 80mph sometime on cruise control.

I might have a chat with the dealer when I get home.

I would have been over the moon with 48mpg when I went to Courchevel, best I got was 40mpg, this was sitting at 80 on the toll roads, I have now done 3800 miles, so think engine is still very tight.

Mine is getting better all the time, its been gradually increasing as the miles go on.

Started off at 42mpg and now its 46mpg at 5600 miles. Its probably the combination of warmer weather and the loosening up of the motor.

These are REAL calculated figures, not my useless MFD figures, it lies through its teeth, i.e. real =46.3mpg, MFD=50.1mpg

This is where your problem lies .... I have noticed a 10mpg (actual, now my MFD reads correctly) drop in mpg @ 80 compared

to 70 mph.

Incidentally mine is actually doing less mpg as time goes by (this is probably down to the winter tyres that have come off the car a fortnight ago,

I can get 48mpg (actual) as seen on a 500 mile trip last weekend (Folkestone to Sheffield and back) but normal use is seeing 45mpg now compared with 47/48mpg with the winter tyres on.

+1 Mile after mile on the French autoroutes with the cruise set at 80mph I get around 46-48mpg on the mfd however do a journey on the 110kph roads and I easily see 58mpg on the display

There is no getting around the fact that to get good mpg you need to drive slower.

Hi I have just completed a 380 mile round trip 90% motorways 60-80 mph mfd showed 64.9 for the days trip, that fillup was showing 58.4 on mfd actual was about 53 mpg 570 miles 51 litres

very impressed as car is carrying a good 300-400kg load

tyres at 36psi all round 10k on clock 140 bhp elegance combi manual

cheers Andy

Well im off back to avallon tomorrow, I shall keep to 70 and see what happens.

MFD was showing high 50's today with a trip thru the mountains to Italy and back. Odd as it was more stop start than motorways.

Ill calculate the real figures when I get home.

Another thought,

What diesel do you use in your cars? I noticed the improvment above after I mistakenly filled up with shell vpower diesel at €1.58 a litre!

I usually use supermarket diesel.

Why are cars optimised for economy at 55mph??? Nowhere do you drive at this speed (unless you're that idiot in the middle lane onf every British motorway, flat cap on, string backed "driving" gloves, bottle top glasses - "mary, don't they know the middle lane is the normal lane, left for slow, right for overtaking").

Also, engines optimised to run on the enhanced fuels - I haven't done the maths (too early on a monday), but surely the increase in cost outweighs the increase in economy??

I filled up this weekend (ouch) and again the wry smile as the range to empty indicator said 765 miles. Even after an hour on the M25, M3 and then A303 at motorway cruise speed (make of that what you will), it was telling me 720 miles to empty. Love it. It actually increased in the first half of the journey, before stabilising and dropping.

It was still showing a tank average of 58 mpg on the MFD - Greenline Superb rocks!

I never use supermarket fuel I have use Shell V power diesel but didnt notice any difference I use what ever I am passing usually

I think you need a couple of tanks of "special" fuel to notice the difference. At 10p a litre more (a massive £6 per fill up) I would notice the difference on my wallet - or at least think I did.

If it gave me an extra 5mpg though...that's 50 miles or so on the tank range, but are the difference in economy that pronounced?

I.e. a 10% increase in cost (10p per ltr) to get a 10% increase in economy (5 mpg)? Or is it more like a 10% increase in cost to get 2% (1 mpg)?
