How long to your first service?

Featured Replies

I checked Harveys variable service indication on maxidot for the first time today. 16100 miles or 660 days to go!That would mean nearly 19000 miles from new, and through 2 UK winters without even an oil change.I shall definitely have it done before the onset of next winter.

I suppose that would mean some cars computer brains not requiring a dealer visit for over 2 years...

After running 3 VAG cars on variable; 1 petrol and two diesel, I've stopped using that program and now only use time /distance (10,000 or 1 year). I've switched due to the poor visible state of the engine oil and that the car feels tied after 18,000 without some TLC.

I have done the same as Tim - service at around 10000, and heading (far too) quickly for the second at just under 20000. I think the system is telling me much about the same, but I would rather be safe than sorry.

Tomorrow the Yeti is headed for Sinclair Swansea for a complete set of new shoes, having turned over about 18000 miles. They will cost me £600 all in, and while I suspect the rears would last a wee while longer, the fronts have been borderline on slicks for a month. I had hoped they would last until service time - but hey ho, it IS a nice drive from Brecon to Swansea!! And I'd rather have a whole set at once.

I put Betty in at 15500 as I felt the 18400 predicted was just too long. The new prediction is for just under 19000 miles.

Elsie the Helipad is telling me that the service is due at about 9500miles, so in about 5,500 miles time........I'm confused. What has happened to the 10,000 miles?

It must have taken an awful lot of Welly to get the mileage down that low! :whew:

or a remap??

Or Elsie is on T & D?

nope. it is saying in 5500 miles. it is set for time and distance - ie 10,000 miles. I changed it when James was with me setting up the car when I collected it. You change it by just resetting it in the service area of the maxidot.

I don't use my right foot that much, I had the remap primarily for economy, but also for joining motorways etc - the 50-70mph needed a little more.

Elsie the Helipad spends most of her time around South London during the days and evenings. Rather hard to use all that power & torque on the congested roads and in a traffic jamemoticon-0140-rofl.gif

Thanks Mike,

Understand now, your on T/D but you've lost 500 miles; how strange :wonder:

For some reason the date/time service system on maxi-dot resets as 9,500 miles or 372 days. I think it is just because 15,000km into miles and rounded up.

I will have Beasty serviced every 10,000 miles. In the days when I was driving 50,000 miles a year on business I had a company Passat on the 'flexible' schedule, that had its first oil change at 29,000 miles when it said it wanted it. I had kept telling both the company , and my garage, that I was concerned in case there was an error somewhere, but they all said 'don't panic'. I wouldn't be comfortable with that for a car I owned, but there you go...

Mmmm, I had a long chat with my local Skoda dealer's service people. They were offering a deal, £299 paid up front to cover the next 2 services based on 2 years/20k miles and services each year/10k ... and the deal included vouchers for £100 of Skoda accessories. When I explained that I did 20/25k miles a year they said "stick with the extended service interval, and just come in when the maxidot tells you". They seemed to be suggesting that time (and the type of mileage - I do a lot of long journeys) was more significant than just the raw mileage figure. I said, "well how about just an oil change at 10k?" "Not necessary" they told me. I'm taking their advice. Maxidot says service at 18k, and that will do for me. I ran an Audi A4 and a Passat, each for about 3 years, on a similar basis and experienced no problems.

I am going to do the 12month/10000 miles service regime as I think you are running on 'gunk' on the

last 3000 miles if you believe the computer at 18000.

'Honest John' recommends more frequent oil changes in these circumstances.

I may even continue with long life fully synthetic oil (Castrol Edge 5-30W as I think is one of the

recommended oils (mentioned on the oil filler cap). She/he's (not sure of a Yeti's

gender) a quality car and deserves the best care.

I believe they use the same oil for both flexible and fixed.

I'm going to stick with the fixed as I drive for hours and get nowhere fastemoticon-0136-giggle.gif around London. The engine may well have been running for longer on Elsie the Helipad over 10,000 miles around London than another that does 18,000 on the motorways.......

My average speed on every tankful seems to be around 16-20mph. not good.

Mike

Looks like I might split the difference. 15,000 miles will come up around 17/18 months . Get a first service then plus another at 36 months regardless of mileage. Maxidot says 19,000mls.All our short distance and urban driving is done in Fabia 1.2 .

Mine quoted about £40 extra to use Longlife oil so appears some don't use same oil.

As good brand synthetic retails at about £19 per litre and 'normal' oil about £10 per litre not

too much a premium but probably a nicer little earner.

Shopping around Skoda dealerships found a wide difference in quotes for servicing so will

definately check around when due.

All Skoda dealerships should be using the 507.00 spec oil for servicing irrespective of whether on fixed or variable.

Can you get a 'fully synthetic' and a 'non synthetic' version that meets the 507.oo spec then???

In a word NO

Oil to 507 for diesels irrespective of service plan being used. For Petrol it's 504 for variable or 502 can be used on Time/Distance. All are synthetic oils.

I will specify 504 for my 1.2Tsi on Time/Distance then (gold standard) as

I aassume they come filled with 504 as they are preset to variable service.

Little difference in price between 502 and 504 spec oils on your link.

So why the £40 extra for longlife..or was I being really quoted for a variable

service.

I thought the only difference between a variable and time/distance service was the oil used??

What is the difference then???

This realy is a bit of of nightmare! Honest John (who I rate highly for good advice) says it is lunatic to expect a new vehicle to survive no oil change (despite "long life oil") after 10000 miles. I'm going for compromise here - I intend to get an oil change service done at 12000 miles (but I do reasonably high mileages).
