Better sticking all of that in a fresh thread really, save cluttering up this thread with suggestions for your Octy.

Thank you for your helpful reply!

The original poster can decide whether or not he wants to reply to me without your help. The "clutter" consists in advice being sought from a fellow member concerning another vehicle very similar to the vehicle which is the subject of the thread. The questions asked are directly inspired by the experience being described by the original poster.

  • I know the O.P and he doesn't post all that often. You would serious get a better response starting a new thread to get a wider spread of experience of the forum.

Thanks.

I did pose my query already under two existing threads entitled "suspension" and "what suspension" in the Octavia II section, as I wanted to avoid creating too many similar threads. As I got no responses though perhaps I shall do as you suggest.

Today I got round to fitting the new discs and pads that I've had for a few weeks. The good news is that the slight judder I had at 80 and above has totally gone, the bad news was that when we came to putting the wheels back on, they no longer fit! Something I hadn't considered was that new pads, which are considerably thicker, pushed the calipers out enough for it to stop the Neptunes mounting on the hub. After a failed attempt with 5mm spaces which caused the balance to go way out, we decided to file the calipers down, paint and re-fit. All good now, but much less space than before, maybe 2mm now!!

So, in conclusion, if fitting well worn second hand R32 brakes, you will get away with the standard calipers. If the pads are new, make sure you take a good few mill off the inside edge of the calipers, otherwise the wheels won't go on.

Interesting. So do you think that's the reason some R32 setups fitted under OEM wheels without the need for filing the calipers?

In hindsight, yes. I guess quite a few people buy the brakes 2nd hand with warn pads (myself included). There was plenty of life left in my pads/discs so would't have been and issue if they hadn't developed a vibration/judder. I think Carl fitted a new set so recognised the problem straight away.

I think its also worth pointing out that its only an issue with the facelift Neptunes and not the older Zeniths (??).

Good to have it cleared up though

Yes, the inside spoke design of the Zeniths seems not to cause an issue with caliper clearance.

Both Carl and Hedge had to grind their calipers down to fit Neptunes over the R32 brakes, this would explain where yours initially fitted then!

Have you got any pictures of the part that needed filing!!!

No I'm afraid not but it's quite easy to explain. It's the edge of the caliper closest to the centre of the wheel and in particular, the curved part. This is the only section (on mine anyway) that was catching on the back of the wheel spokes.

Still not sure where you mean tbh??

Can you add an arrow to the picture to help me out?

Any excuse to show mine off! :giggle:

Sent u a pm pagey about the ap coilovers. Well impressed rides spot on not harsh at all but is firmer. And that's wound right down at the min but will raise the back up 10mm.

What offset you running on your BBSes Pagey? Or are you just curious about where the filiing needs to occur? Be a shame to alter yours, now they look so pretty ;)

Here you go:

This is the gap I had prior to fitting new pads.

After the new pads, the part I've marked with arrows was catching the rear of the spokes.

ET45 mate, I don't intend on touching them just yet, but looking to the future and my next car will likely be a FL vRS. As I will probably sell the Marauder with the BBS's on it, but the brakes will be transfered to the new car, I need to know what is required to fit behind Neptunes....

Thanks for the picture Noba, it all makes sense now.

All becomes clear - nice planning :)

Not that you've thought about it or anything ;)

Any chance to get to see some more pictures of this car? I've developed an itch for a silver FL RS TSi....
