Advice on Picking brake discs & pads fabia vrs

Featured Replies

Hi guys, I need new brakes front & back for my fabia vrs. In the past I've only ever been to the local vw garage & they've put on whatever they see fit.

Could anyone give me some advice on buying discs & pads myself. I have a nice garage who will fit whatever I get for me. I think for ease I will stick to the standard brake set up as the upgrade seems like a pain in the butt.

I found these discs, front & back on eBay: http://wap.ebay.co.uk/Pages/ViewItemPic.aspx?aid=390212128576&emvcc=0

would they suit? Should I be speciffically looking for grooved & drilled?

Then I was thinking of getting some pads such as green stuff, unless anyone can show me some better ones. I don't really want to spend the earth, but then don't wanna have to replace them straight away either.

Thanks all for your help :)

Grooved discs on a road car, waste of money, and they can crack. You can't go wrong with Mintex pads and discs.

EBC stuff, total pants.

See.. This is exactly why I need you guys! Would have totally wasted my hard earned cash :( right so standard solid mintex discs & pads all round?

Yes, I have them on my car and they work well :)

1st of all forgive me if im misunderstanding you. and dont want to confuse you.....but you will need vented front discs [ just not grooved or drilled] didnt want you ringing someone and asking for ''solid'' discs for the front as they would be wrong

Wicked, thanks :) vented front discs. What about the back?same? And mintex pads then, nothing fancy like greenstuff?

im pretty sure that all mk1 vrs' have [as standard] 288mm vented front discs, and 232mm solid rears

reagrds the pads, everyone has there own favourites, i know someone earlier in this thread stated that EBC were poor, but i had a few sets [for everday use] and they were fine, but anything like ferodo/mintex etc will be fine, we sell various makes

item no. 170547109703 on eBay, says they're for audi a3, anyone know if they'd fit the fabia? Or I found item no. 130372370199 which specifies fabia vrs but are more expensive & look exactly the same.

Can't seem to find a rear set with pads mintex combo, anyone bought a set recently? :)

Thanks for everyones help so far x

I got Mintex fronts off a seller by the name of 'YESCARPARTS' on eBay last week. Very fast delivery and reasonably priced. It may be worth dropping them a message to see if they can get rears as they deal direct with Mintex apparently.

I'm having a mate fit mine on Friday so no idea how they feel yet.

Yeah marc those ones are the ones I've found on eBay from that same seller, the second item number in my post above. But I also found the Audi a3 ones on the first item number which appear the same but £20 cheaper, so just wondering if they'd fit.. I'll email yescarparts & see if they do rear ones too :)

A lot of people are not keen on EBC stuff. However I don't have any problems with them at all. I have Greenstuff all round.

BTW that eBay link does not seam to work.

I'll fix you guys some links when I get home, iPhones not being very helpful!

I have just had fitted pagid discs and pads all round. £115 from euro car parts for everything!

300 miles later and they have bedded in nicely.

Hope this helps.

Glad you pointed that out, my answer was less than precise  Also sorry to all EBC fans, I don't like excessive brake dust

Have a look in the site sponsors section and drop Graham down at Jorily

a line. IIRC they do a "pack" of oe standard kit containing all you need

for a very reasonable price.

Here they are...

These are all you need, for a road car they are the same as OE parts and grip very well, right feel, progressive.

From ECP they come somewhat cheaper than the Main Dealers. Don't go for fancy coloured pads, grooved or dimpled discs, they do have problems, leave them to the "I wanna be different brigade".

Ah right, I'm unable to get on eBay in work so didn't realise. Not sure about the A3 ones fitting personally, although reading the listing it looks like only the pads are mintex, it doesn't mention the discs being mintex that may be why they are cheaper (may be just as good, as I was advised most discs are pretty much the same).

Thanks for all your input guys ;) I think I have decided I'd like to try the mintex ones if I can get them. Seems like a middle ground kind of set up & I'd like to try something different from standard this time. I can find the front set and pads easily enough on eBay, but no rear sets :wonder: if on eBay a set states they're for an Audi a3, are they model specific? Or as long as they are the correct mm and a 5 stud fitting, will they fit? :S

Do you have to buy them on Ebay, GSF and ECP sell them off the shelf, with free advice as well, at least you'll get the right parts first time.

Do you have a decent motor factor near you? Much better to go in, give them your cars reg number and get the right part first time. I paid £37 total for Mintex rear discs and pads. No postage and packing, no waiting for parcels etc etc.

I've never used a motor factor before, however just googles local ones and there's one in the town where I work, so I might call them tomorrow and see how much they quote me! B)

Some car parts shops do sell cheap, cheap parts, so insist on your chosen brands. Find out if there is a GSF or ECP parts place near you, they are more likely to have the ones you want.

lol , nice to know im usefull avery now and then :D

Eurocarparts website :wall:

Suggests that a 256mm disc is appropriate for a Fabia VRS! It also offers the 288mm ones. At least that's an obvious choice. On the brake pad front, it offers two different (at least) pad shapes. There are notes/restrictions that should point one in the right direction. However, it's not immediately obvious and the website lists all of the possibilities and appropriate... When they're not.
