2010 auto express tyre test

Featured Replies

Thanks

Thats good timing as my octy is going to need some new front tyres in the next 2k.

Nice, a facelift VRS as well so couldn't ask for a more accurate test.

Shame they don't test noise levels as that's pretty important on the vrs.

Dunlops are mentioned as being noisy within the article

You know I'm reading that test, and I'm now thinking i should maybe get pirelli's next.

I have SC3's at the moment and yes, the win the test and are a great all-rounder, but I drive like a pussy when its wet, but I thrash the tits off it when its dry - maybe the pirelli would be a better choice for me given its clear advantage in the dry (and its not too far off the pace in the wet).

Hmmm..

I actually have the issue with this test in and from our point of view it's ideal. Howvere I find it a bit dubious that the tests where done on Continentals own track, sometimes using their drivers and their tyre came out top! :wonder:

But on a serious note it is a good test and the reality is any of the tyres that came in top 5 should be fine. Would be worth noting though that the road/track surface would also probably be slightly differennt to UK roads which would affect the results.

Continentals also won the winter test . will give those pirelli's a go when its time as i only use them in summer (Continentals winters for the bad weather)

Thanks for the post

Ever heard of a brand called Sunny? Sound (and cost) like they ought to be awful, but they actually seem not three bad, especially at £50 each fitted!!

I had a pair of sunny's on my last car (205/50/17's) I was very surprised how good they were and £126 fitted for 2 tyres I wouldn't hesitate getting them again, if I was to say anything negative about them the only thing would be in the wet grip could have been slighty better.

I wonder at the value of the test. The top few tyres are overall less than a few percent apart. On some of the individual tests the tyres are scored less than 1% apart. How do you (subjectively) assess a tyre to an accuracy of better than one part in one hundred? I am not sure its a meaningful and repeatable difference.

I suffered a sudden attack by the road nail yesterday - result an unfixable puncture - and got offered a Sunny 3800 (Tyre Express) as a quick fix budget tyre. Haven't tried it in rain yet but then I don't drive anywhere near the limit in the wet (or dry!) anyway. It is nearside rear.

So far it feels fine, and it is not noisier than the expensive Continental it replaced. I discussed with the manager whether it was okay being only on one side and he said that as it is the correct spec it would be no problem.

Personally i go with Tyre Reviews and not some sponsored mag/website of that number1 winner of said test :giggle:

I had some Continental Tyres once...

Never again..

Noisy, poor wear rate and not good in the wet

Still like the Falkens I had on my last Octy.

I'm begining to think that auto express are a bit of joke.

Judging by numerous "ordinary" user reviews, I reckon if you took the same set of tyres and put them on 20 different cars, with 20 different suspensions and 20 different owners, you'd get 20 different opinions.

Not had to change the tyres on my octavia yet but on my old Laguna I used to swap the old back tyres onto the front and put the new tyres on the rear. Usually fitted Michelins but one time they didnt have any so went with continentals. Big mistake, the continentals on the rear wore out before the michelins which had previously been on the rear and were now on the front.

No they didn't. The Goodyear Ultragrip 7 won the winter test, the Contis came 2nd.
