CD Changer

Featured Replies

Hiya all

The multi changer in our 2003 vrs isnt working. When you present the cartridge to the unit it goes in but the electrics dont trigger and "pull it in" I havent checked anything yet and dont want to change the unit or go MP3 so is this a common issue?

Any ideas greatly appreciated, plus wheres the fuse for this and if it is arsed will any changer fit the VAG cable?

Cheers

This might sound off the wall, but does the rear screen washer work properly? If not, I suspect the pipe joint under the stacker has come apart.

As with Ken and Paul.

Does the headunit work? It might have been disconnected at the back, or, as ken and paul said, the washer pipe has split behind it..

ive got both head unit and cd changer available if needed. cover the postage costs and a few beer tokens my way and theyre yours

The cd player doesn't pull the cartridge in, you have to push it in by hand. When you eject it, it is driven out, but loading it is a manual job. Push it in and I think it clicks into position.

ExAudiSi, that is a quality post. Can't believe no one posted this earlier.

To the OP, does the cd cartridge push in and click into place? If so, it's normal.

It's blindingly obvious sure, but so much so that you never think about it. That said, I'm sure mine goes part-way down and then gets "grabbed" by the mech (about where it stops going up in the eject cycle).

This sounds like mine!!!! What do you do 2 check the joint in the washer pipe, what needs take. Apart?

I'm having the very same issue with my changer not working. Seems to be the season. Only difference is my cartridge is in the changer and won't eject. When I turn the stereo on and try to select a CD it comes up with "No CD Changer"

Which according to the manual means the cable is unplugged. Checked the on at the changer end and its connected,

Whats the chances of the stereo connection coming off?

Does anyone have a wiring diagram they can look at for me and tell me what the different wires are so I can do voltage checks etc.

Thanks

The relevant joint in the washer pipe is more or less directly below the CD changer, so you need to take the changer out in order to remake the pipe joint. You can see enough to see if there's water in the well though, and if there isn't then this isn't the problem.

Is the changer end plug wet? This could give the same symptoms.

No, it didn't seem to be. Took the plug apart and it seemed a little dirty but not wet. Gave it a quick squirt of IPA but still not good. Where is the fuse for the changer?

In the fusebox. The exact location can be found by looking for the sticky post that has the link to the pdf manuals in it and downloading them.

Help,

I'm still struggling with this problem, bought another changer (off ebay admittedly) and it is coming up with the exact same fault.

Try switching to the changer from the stereo and it is saying "no CD changer"

And I cannot eject the cassette.

All the fuses seem ok, plug has a little corrosion on it but seems to be making a decent contact. Have had a multimeter on the plug and am getting 12v at one of the pins, is this right? Or should I be getting voltage at other pins to? Could it be an earth fault??

Please, someone help me.

There should be 3 power wires on the back of the changer. Yellow should be permanent 12v, and red should become live when the headunit is switched on. These are both measured in reference to the brown wire which should be ground.

sorry to resurrect an old thread, however I am having similar problems with my 6 cd autochanger in that it does grab and play the cd's but the sound is either non existant or awful, I seem to have a leak and the plug connecting the cd changer to the loom is damp, I need to address the leak, MK1 Octy estate, and do have an option of purchasing another changer from a memebr of the forum, but wasn't sure if the damp plug meant that the loom would be damaged or just the changer?

My quandry if that if I go ahead and buy a replacement cd changer would it work? I presume it would be ok with my existing head unit too as they are not linked in anyway?  I obviously have the code for the HU.

Thanks all

If the plug(s) on the bottom of the changer are damp then the probability is that the rear washer joint in the loom has split near by making everything wet.  Remake that connection first and then look at the condition of the plug/sockets for pin damage.

Yep this was my thinking, just wasn't sure where to start looking for the washer jet pipe, is it tied in with the wiring loom then?  the pins seemed ok tbh and i've tried to dab them with IPA with a cotton bud, I may just go ahead and purchase the changer available on the forum and then at least i'll know one way or another if the plugs are shot it, they've had a good week now to dry since I found the puddle!

Just didn't want to start ripping off the interior estate door trim looking for the popped off pipe and damage the clips etc if not necessary, i'll remiove the changer again tonight and try to find the section in the loom if that's where it is.

It plays ok, ie, changes track and disc spins etc, it just has either no sound or intermitant noises like a scratched disc, I have aven bought a cleaning disc and the voice instructions on that won't play such is the distortion, so power etc is fine, just playback is awful.

See existing posts #2 and #12.

yes thanks have already read those, have removed the changer a few times but not the bracket, couldn't see or feel any washer jet pipe on it's own hence my question if it was inside the loom?

Edited by nemesis

The washer pipe is wrapped up inside the loom.

cheers for that, just what I was looking for ;-) will take a peek when home from Bristol :-D

I believe the changers are not interchangeable. I've already tried that and it didn't work. Make sure you eject your CD cassette before all stops working completely. I'm currently hunting for a new head unit. Gave up trying to fix the changer connections.

Make sure you fix the washer connection or there could be a problem with the other bits of the loom. Don't glue or fix the joint as it's an accessible joint, if it can't pop, an other one will go when under pressure instead.

This is advice I would normally say, but I have been beaten too it.  Best an easy to access joint in the pipework fails than one behind the plastic boot trim/elsewhere.
