After installing Gimp onto my Mac, I decided to have a go at putting in some kind of sky into a picture I previously posted...

A couple of images of a little wooden waterfall i found earlier today while i was out and about. It's on the outskirts of Sheffield just below one of the many dams in the area.

Nice, Rob. I'd probably brighten them up a smidge and maybe straighten the buildings a bit :)

My lovely new wife and myself are on honeymoon in Iceland at the moment. We have both wanted to come here for ages. What a wonderful place.

Whilst she is having a lie-in as there is a dusting of snow and she is worn out with all of the exploring we have done, I thought I would share some of the images that I have taken.

The area is rugged and beautiful and sparsely populated. We are staying at Lake Myvatn and have enjoyed exploring the area.

There are plenty of Octy Estates here. Even saw a scout earlier today.

I hope you like them and give you a feel for this part of Iceland.

This first Image was taken Just North of Husavik. Here is Elaine striding into the distance looking for a viewpoint for a photo. That's not a grad filter for the sky, that's how it was!

Dettifoss up close. I got very wet taking this! I was sitting on a rock at the waterfall edge with a frightening drop on my right. It took me ages to spot out all of the raindrops from the lens.

To give a sense of scale, look closely at the opposite bank, the squiggly line is a path and there is a person wearing a light coloured coat just above the dark bank.

A hand held shot with a slow shutter speed to give some movement to the water. 24mm Lens.

Jar, not wanting to sound critical but I would like to make a suggestion.

Night photography works well just before the sky goes black, if you try taking your shot again just around dusk the sky will be a dark blue and add to your picture.  That said you have good exposure control of the light trails.

Here is an image I took around dusk of the pump house at the Albert dock in Liverpool, you can see a little detail in the dark areas as the sky is a little bit lighter, let me know what you think.

Thank you, James :)

I will give it another go but a little earlier.

It was light when I first got up there that night, but I'm still very new and took me a little while to get it how I wanted it to look. :p

Always open to help, constructive criticism and direction from people who actually know what they're doing :)

I am still learning too, here is a link to a mate of mine's Flickr, there are some great night shots in this lot. Everyday is a learning day Jars.

Whilst this topics active, does anyone know how to transfer Flickr photo's to here? (Uh oh noob alert)

Absolutely and one of the reasons why I enjoy it so much :)

Some great pictures there B) will take a proper look at home on a decent screen and not my iPhone :p

Hyphons, you will need to copy the HTML link from Flickr, you will find this when you choose your photo on Flickr you will see an arrow pointing right, this will show the HTML.

On Brisky you will need to click the small green box above in the header, just down and left from the smiley. When the box opens paste the HTML link, you will then have to shorten it, for example.

<a href="https://www.flickr.com/photos/swivelonit/14923450877" title="330d by Jamie Hyde, on Flickr"><img src="https://farm6.staticflickr.com/5590/14923450877_03559d4bd4_b.jpg" width="1024" height="768" alt="330d"></a>

This is a copied HTML from Flickr once pasted, you will need to shorten this by deleting the first part and last part, you just need the part like you see below.

Agree with you about shooting earlier. In the Clifton pic it would have shown just enough detail in the cliffs to show the valley as opposed to the look atm which shows no virtually no separation between valley and cliffs

If in doubt, always shoot in RAW. You can normally (with a bit of care) get about 2 stops of light back (a stop is a doubling/halving of light) so getting 2 stops means 4 times the light which would have probably retained some of the detail.

You did well with the light trails though.

Yeah I do shoot in Raw.

I was aiming to get all the lights to standout against the black of the cliffs, along with some light trails. I am happy for a second attempt :p

I've still not got out again as been fighting man-flu or something for a few weeks, but I will get out and try to put all your suggestions into practice :)

Thanks again for the pointers guys.

Not sure what package you use for PP so I am speaking here about Photoshop

For images like that one I tend to either process it using the "Shadows" slider in ACR in PS so it maintains the lighter portions where they are or, once imported into PS itself by using curves where I can lock down the highlight end of the curve and push the darker end.

I started out using Gimp but have since purchased Aperture, which has set me back a bit :D

I so kind of understand what you are saying, but is far in advance of my current skill set :p

I do really appreciate the suggestions though

David, for the low light interior shots, I'd really try to use the little natural light available a lot more. Your Cava shot is good and pretty clean from noise despite the high ISO, but your coffee shot IMO is not that pleasing because the majority of the light comes from the flash and so you have a pretty cold looking photo with the offset flash shadow (if you get the grip, you'll have to hold it the other way around). It doesn't entice me to drink coffee ;)

Try slowing down the shutter speed a fair bit and increasing the ISO to get more of the ambient light. Try first without the flash and see what you end up with. If it's more or less usable and just lacks a bit of punch, then add the flash in again, dialling it down but keeping the other settings the same (ISO, shutter speed, aperture, etc).

Or, just take your flash photo and warm up the colour temperature a bit - make that coffee more inviting than it looks :)

If you're often shooting at the long end of your zoom lens, I'd recommend getting the 50mm f/1.8 lens. It's fairly cheap and you'll get far better photos with it at the more extreme end of the light scale :)

Sorry if I come across hard, I'd just like to make some suggestions having learnt the hard way myself :) Keep at it :)

That's fine friend :) if you are referring to me of course, it was tea btw ;) trouble is with most of my shots it's spur of the moments one chance to take it shot so going back to try isn't an option, but I'm still learning and welcome opinions with open arms :)

a few shots from the half term break a couple of weeks back

Some great colours in those first 2

The first two are slightly too saturated for my taste - also there looks to be a distinct line across the second one about 1/3 of the way up where it looks like there was either a grad ND filter or a merged pano didn't quite work
