I'd never go through a car wash with the octy (where with previous cars I have) cos the paint seems to be made of butter. Hand wash only.

A hand wash done by your own fair hand, using a decent shampoo, and rinsing off before washing and after shampooing..followed by a chamois.

That is if you want to keep it looking the best..

Hi I paint cars for a living and in my opinion never ever, ever use an automated car wash!!!!! They age the paint / laquer finish like you would'nt belive.

If you value your car, their is no 'best' in the 2 options you've given!

In my student days I used to work at a Filling staition with an Automatic car-wash and you would not believe the damage these things can do to cars:

Ripping off door mirrors, wipers, rear bumpers, 4x4 spare wheels, aerials and smashing glass and tearing vinyl :eek:

Add to that that they don't actualy get your car very clean, missing the hard to get at places where salt & road-grime accumulate.

They are both as good as washing your car with a bucket of sand and a pack of sand paper. As has been said before just hand wash it

The only way I wash my car is by hind,as Andy said rinse,wash,rinse and leather - only using good quality shampoo - none of this nicking the fairy liquid

I will confess to car washing my Octy at the weekend. It was filthy enough to make the numberplates unreadable. With no free time to wash it by hand I took the plundge.

Have to say that it did a crappy job. The supposed "Wheel wash" diddnt get them very clean and the blow dry was that severe that it blew the seals in around the sunroof and water down my neck!!

Buy yourself a pressure washer with a detergent bottle attachment, its great, you can pretend you are at the self-wash at the garage, only without the beeps ending the rinse cycle before you've managed to get the soap off half the car, leaving you to drive home with a half-clean, half-mucky motor!!!!

Seriously though, I bought one a couple of weeks ago from Halfords (see related thread in the car-care section) and have not looked back since, it makes the job of cleaning the car that much easier, just make sure you don't set the spray to full power or you may have to buy a panel beating hammer as well!!

Jet wash jet wash jet wash.....genius inventions....put you cash in as you clean the quicker you are the less it costs.... consontrate on the dirty areas skip over the clerner areas...and if you have a good one the last two setting is an gloss and then anti smear no need for leathering...and leaves the car sparkling

faling that normal hand wash baby....with hose pipe then leathering of and polish...

definitely hand washing no matter how dirty it is, i wouldn't trust those car washes or the people in car parks.
