DMF on its way out - when to replace?

Featured Replies

My DMF is on its way out, has been for the past year or so.

I've noticed recently it's got a bit worse.

You don't notice it much while on the move, but there is a quite strong pulsing when sat at idle, and I can feel it through the clutch pedal when taking up power.

The local VAG specialist I use for repairs seem to be of the mindset of waiting until it catastrophically falls to bits, but it's really starting to annoy me now, and I'm getting the car mapped in the next couple of weeks so that's only going to accelerate the failure...

What do you all think? Replace it now/soon or wait a bit longer?

If it's getting mapped, do it now, with a fresh clutch as well. £300 the lot if you shop about.

Cheers for that.

Where have you seen the price of £300? What would you recommend brand wise? Sachs? LUK? Or just get a direct replacement from TPS (but I'm guessing that will just be a VAG branded Sachs/LUK anyway)? I might just see what my local VAG specialists charge for supply and fit.

On a similar note, what do you reckon about the EGR? How bad does it have to get before you swap one of them? I was gonna DIY swap mine, as it's covered everything nearby with a nice coating of gunky black oil, but now I think I might have to fork out for a DMF, I'm wondering if I might leave it a little longer...

Hi mate,

If the car is getting mapped it MIGHT be worth while looking at an upgrade - I guess it will depend on what you actaully aim to do with the car.

Either Sachs or LUK will be fine :)

I cannot say that you will be able to get a complete clutch kit, release bearing and flywheel for £300 but if you can do it! :D

The approx prices:

Clutch kit - £130-150

Release Bearing - £40-50

Flywheel - £200-300

ISH

But as said if there is a kit out there for the whole lot for £300 then bargin!!!!! :D

The EGR valve - you could look at removing this? it does give more of a shudder when turning the engine off but will stop getting the exhaust gasses in the intake. Usually can get replacement ones fairly cheap from places like Euro car parts and GSF etc :)

I think mines on the way out too. Does your DMF make a whirring sound when you put your foot on the clutch when the car is cold?. It goes away on mine when driven for a couple of minutes. Should I replace it?.

no mate thats the release bearing, pretty normal to hear a change in tone when the clutch is pressed, keep hearing about this clutch kit for 300 quid where are we getting this from then??

From the TPS book, it's Sachs/LUK. DMF for a standard PD100 was ~£110 (service exchange only), clutch kit about the same when I looked last year.

I was given a price of around £650 from my local VAG specialist for a Sachs/LUK clutch, DMF and new release bearing fitted. I didn't think that was too bad?

If the kit can be had for £300-£400 then £350-£250 for fitting sounds like a lot of money. I paid £150ish for a clutch swap last time I think

Matt

Gilfriend has just paid £670 For new Clutch and DMF and the garge she used only charged £35 P/H

This was a VAG part for the DMF the invoice says £310 IIRC just for the DMF

(PD110 Golf Btw)

Unit 18 have quoted 350 for clutch and release bearing with labour, I reckon 600 ish with dmf is about right

Thanks for the advice mate, looks like I will need a new clutch then. Does this look any good to anyone? :

Do not touch them usually advised from what I've read previously!

Don't bother, there not worth it!!! I nearly bought one of these but was very strongly advised against it. You can get an oem one for £150

I didn't do a lot of shopping round, but the going rate for the Clutch and DMF kit alone seemed to be £550 when I had a quick look. So I think £650 fitted isn't bad - especially when you consider that's from a very highly regarded specialist too, who have a waiting list as long as your arm.

I don't know where the prices of £300 are coming from. If anyone knows of a reputable company selling a Sachs or LUK kit for that much, I'd like to know.

I wouldn't fit that unbranded ebay clutch to my car if you paid me!

The £300 price is from AVS car parts. However, they have had no stock for some time now. Next best price I could find was £439 for complete kit, clutch/DMF/release bearing. now that's a full retail price, so garage could buy in for £300 or less.

Thanks Moggy. Is that for a decent quality branded item?

Sachs which is basically OEM.

All this trouble about these DMF's failing and the price to replace, is it not possible to change it out for a single mass flywheel instead ? maybe save on a few pennies in the process ?

Si

Yes, but it's dual mass for a reason, to protect the gearbox from torque spikes.

You can wack a SMF in, just depends if you can live with the chatter on idle.

ahh, I did not know that. I just thought it was because it was quieter or somethin. makes sense to have one then :p
