Trade-in offers with VAT deal

Recommended Posts

I have been making enquiries about changing my 66,000 mile Mk1 2.0i Elegance for a Mk2 (probably manual 1.2tsi Elegance). With the VAT-off deal and the consequent unpredictable delivery, I prefer to trade-in so that there is no hassle with synchronising the changeover. According to What Car and Glass's, my car is worth around £2,700 trade-in (private sale £3,500 and to buy from a dealer £4,500). The dealer keeps coming back with about £1,750 - which is sub-scrappage value! Anyone else getting similar responses?

How old is the car, and what condition is it in. MOT left, tyre condition, time to next service, all these things affect the value. The CAP black book is the thing to get your hands on, the public Glasses guide is different to the ones the dealer has, and the which guide is as much use as Parkers in that in my experience is always way off.

The car is April 2005, good condition, MOT one year, new tyres all round last September, next service December AND bought and serviced at the same dealer that offered me sub-scrappage for it!

thats something im intrigued about. With the VAT free deals, does that mean you will lose the same amount off the value of the car after say3 years or does that VAT deal mean we will lose less?

I would think the amount you will get, will be the same percentage of the price you paid as if the VAT deal didn't exist. If a car is advertised at £15K but everyone knows it is sold at £12K then it is a £12K car not a £15K. Sadly you can't have your cake and eat it, well unless you have a Fabia cake stylee car :)

I thought the VAT deal came from the manufacturer though, so the valuation of your trade in should be independent of it. Perhaps James can help. I do remember that cars often don't reach the 'book' price as the market can be fickle, although yours does sound low :(

I got offered £1000 less than book trade in price for my punto, when I was looking to order new! I laughed in their face, I showed them the book trade in price (with mileage deduction) and they wouldn't give me it! I said.. ~"its the tarde in price!" they wouldn't budge... idiots lost a sale. I bought mine (pre registered 14 miles) from a ford dealership, and they gave me the correct trade-in price for my car . No was I was going to give it away.

I was offered £2500 for our 53 plate Fabia Elegance, but told them I wanted £3000 or I was walking.

Got the £3000, but being such a nice car they'd sold it within a week!

Too many factors to consider when it comes to trade in, including the margin they are making on the car they're selling, the condition, colour and general saleability of your car, whether they are under pressure to shift cars (time of year, time of month, etc).

Sadly trade in tends to give the lowest price, hence why it is easy for the dealer to then sell your car on for between £1k and £2k profit typically, sometimes more, sometimes less.

Selling private is the best option having already tried a trade in so you know where your bottom line is, then anything above this and you have saved yourself some money.

Are they still running the NO VAT offer? I thought it expired yesterday but i'm popping down to my local dealer on thursday... hope it's still running else it's going to make buying the model/engine I want well... not really viable as it'll be a few thousand more :/

I think everybody needs to remember that 'book' price doesn't exist. Only a foolish dealer would simply offer what the guides tell them as they are just that, a "guide". Each dealer will have a good idea of their local market, what sells and what doesn't. Even simple things like colour make a huge difference.

Of course there's always room to haggle but if they won't meet what you personally feel you car is worth then try to find somebody who can.

I know it's trendy to slag off dealers, but they don't generally make quite the money people think. We used to mark up a car about £1,500 from it's trade in (on average for something like a small Nissan or Peugeot) Out of that came perhaps a months depreciation of say £200. a bit of work to make the purchaser happy (say £100-£300) and then the customer wants to haggle several hundred pounds off the price, not take the Dealers finance and want top money for his/her trade in.

I agree dealers need to make profit and make a living but they need to sort out customer service for the money they make

I agree

The only really good customer service I have had in recent years is from a BMW dealer. The chap who owned the franchise only owned that one business and even though I had the baby 1 series, I was treated as well as the average 7 series owner. They bent over backwards to help me in any way and the servicing was even cheaper than the Octy!!!! I don't think I will get as good service from Audi. They already seem to have forgotton I spent quite a bit of money with them last year :(

Got £10750 for 2007 Jeep Patriot 2.0CRD Limited with only 12k miles. Bang on the money book wise.

Dealer shifted to local 4X4 specialist who had it on the forecourt with £1500 mark up.

Sold in two weeks.

Happy with that to be honest.

Not happy that the wait maybe much longer than we agreed.

Cheers

Lee

Got a fair price for my RX8, was £ 500 off from what i was really looking for, but the VAT deal was too good to miss to I let them have it. Plus they quoted price based on 16 weeks delivery.

They have had the car up for a £ 1,500 over what they paid me, but remains unsold.

To me you dont want to give your car away for nothing but its all about the 'change over' price in my little world so the overall deal I did, I was very happy with.
