VAG 170 PS Diesel Injector Failures - VOSA action

Skoda UK also have a goodwill scheme however this is based upon brand loyalty and requires that the car was bought directly from Skoda (mine was bought from a second hand retailer) and that all servicing is done by Skoda (mine goes to an independant which is cheaper and arguably more capable). Fail on both counts!!! Back to the drawing board!

This is the EXACT point I was fighting Audi on for a while now:

- Only Full Audi Service History (FASH) customers will get a "goodwill gesture" - But NONE of the service inspections cover anything remotely to do with the Injectors or Loom at ANY point. So going to an Indy would make no difference as Audi would have not spotted a problem anyway.

- I bought the car second hand from Audi. But apparently as I now own it outright, I am a "Private" customer and they no longer can help me. So driving the big fat Audi badge around does not class as brand loyalty. I bought the car ouright FFS, so you CUT ME OFF?

- None of the free Audi "diagnostics tests" cover injectors or loom checks, you have to pay extra for that and they STILL would have found nothing as the faiulre has no tell signs, it just fails!

So they suppy people with faulty parts, and then their only excuse to why they won't replace them is based on policies that have NO RELATION to the fault itself. This is not something the owner breaks, it was sold broken to them, and now they're washing their hands on the matter.

VOSA better not be spineless on the issue and get it resolved, otherwise I'm going all the way and dragging in trading standards and the papers into this. Once again I ask whether someone has to get killed before they do something about this.

The policies they make are there to stop people from making a fuss. This is not a trivial matter, whatever the desk jockey over the phone says. He is paid by VAG to get rid of you. He doesn't care if you crash your car, he doesn't care if you pay £1000 to replace the part, he doesn't care if it affects 1000s of owners. He just wants to get through the day with as little hassle as possible and get paid... YOU however still have the car, and you WILL have another failure at some point...

Keep pressing, don't let them get away with this.

I'm also quite happy to report that, although my DPF issues havent gone away, since my full tank including a bottle of JLM DPF cleaner my problems seem to have settled (although not gone away complete

  • Yep, that's pretty much what the previous 769 posts alluded to too Glad you got it sorted, it's just a shame you hadn't seen this thread earlier and avoided a breakdown on the motorway. I wonder ho

Is this a issue for a large percentage of PD170 owners or only a small number?

Worrying reading.

It's becoming widespread now as these Siemens injectors get older.

I detect a little "softening" by VAG over injector replacements - they're probably trying to stave off a VOSA attack - even though they know VOSA are spineless compared with the US equivalent. VAG probably think they will get away with it - and they're probably right.

There have probably been some very interesting internal VAG meetings at M-K...

rotodiesel.

My car is approaching 4 years old and 30,000 miles and reading this does cause me concern.

Do you actually drive your car?? That's low miles you have there but doesn't seem to bear any relevance to a failure, I had one go at 50k then the last at 83k.

Some are as lie as your miles and the highest I have seen is 120k, you just never know.

not needed yet on mine as its still relatively young but would the aftermarket warrantys be a wise investment if there are niggles coming at the magical "just outside warranty /built in obsolesence bit"? i must admit for what is paid out it seems value compared to the four figure bills some members are getting for clutch/ dmfs , the dpfs and the injector fault on this posting.

This happened to my VRS a couple of weeks ago too on the M1. The glow plug coil light flashes and by the time you notice the engine is dead. I didn't have a problem steering at 70mph or stopping as there still was some servo assistance. Being towed behind an AA van for an hour was a different ball game and I'm glad I had 3 shredded wheat for breakfast as it's pretty tough at slower speeds and brakes are next to useless.

I'll make sure a report goes to VOSA as up until someone pointed this out to me I thoughtvit was just one of those things.

I'm worried about this as well.

I've just got a quote from warranty direct. They're quoting just over £30 p/mnth. I wonder if its worth it. Does anyone know if they will cover this Siemens injector issue? I assume it would?

Has anyone had any dealings with them?

WD were about £300 for 13 months cover if you give them a prod for a bit of a discount at the sales stage.

FWIW, I never had any problems with them when I had to claim for various repairs, so it can't be all bad :)

I had considered it. I will speak to my mechanic and ask him what EXACTLY needs to be covered in case this happens and then write to WD direct so we have it in black and white that they will DEFINATELY cover it, no quesitons asked. Although their small print (read through the whole thing) says it DOES cover it, there may be some combination of "known fault" + "user issue" that may void it...

I'll find out and get back to you guys asap.

Keep pressing VOSA though, keep spreading the word. We shouldn't have to be getting these warranties in the first place. I'd also suggest sending written proof asking for these things to be specifically covered, so in case VAG actually DO something about, you may have grounds to claim them back off VAG on the basis you only purchased it for this problem... I know I would, I'm in this for the long run...

does the superb not share these injectors then? if so how did it get to no1 in the auto express article

yup it happened to me 3 weeks ago , 4 years old 23k miles, had any Indy replace it under my private warranty. but it my case when it failed the glow light came on and the car went into limp so was drivable

the superb has different injectors to the models affected

ive been thinking of buying a vrs tdi for the mrs in the next couple of months but reading this is making me paranoid!

are the dead injectors being replaced with the same type or upgrades?

is there larger injectors/upgraded ones that could be fitted anyway? i know with petrol cars in the past when tuning them we ve upgraded injectors to bigger/better ones to increase performance is this the same for diesels?

Just been browsing the usual sites for a vRS diesel estate myself.

Was just going to start a thread asking are there any major issues i should be aware of on a high mileage example I'd found, and found this thread first.

I shan't bother with the new thread now, and shan't bother purchasing a Skoda Octavia vRS diesel now either.

Hope you lot get this potentially lethal, horrendously expensive and most worrying problem sorted out pronto.

Hey guys, after making use of your extensive wisdom!

Have a '07 octavia vrs with the usual 2.0 pd tdi. Last weekend I suddenly lost all power, the glow plug light started flashing and it went into limp mode, I was subsequently towed the 200 miles home by Mr AA.

Now home, it has trouble starting, but will do with a little tickle of the throttle, then runs like a 1930 Cummings tractor, sounding as though it's. On 3 cylinders. When revved it pours White smoke out the back.

Now this doesn't sound like a typical injector fault to me, or glow plug, neither does it seem although the turbo has a fault as it still spools. So can anyone point me in the right directions?

I'm planning to pressure test the head, not that it's been using oil of coolant, check the plugs and most importantly do a continuity check on the injectors.

Thanks for any input!!

Sounds like an injectors failed and the white smoke is the unburnt diesel not quite burning with exhaust heat, when mine failed it sounded like a tractor on 3 cylinders

So this is like the the teves mk60 failures it can go at anytime, was not aware of the injector problem.Well had the vrs just over 2 years and was gonna get rid next year so fingers crossed eh,don't think i'm gonna get another octy or vag if this is the tricks they are playing..

Reading this has completely put me off buying a PD170 vRS especially of there's no support from skoda. I'll probably look at the costs of running a petrol now.

i was gonna replace my mk1 octavia this year with a vrs diesel, but not now. not having read this thread. the worse thing about all this is the way vag are treating its customers. most car companies have issues with their cars but its how that company deals with the customer and this is awful. i looked for this thread because a work mate of mine has an audi a3 tdi with only 25000 miles on the clock and he has had 1 injector failure. i hope everyone files a report and gets satsfaction on this.

we've sold another 4 this week

Absolutely terrible handling by Skoda UK and VAG Group generally. Must be why they developed the CR engine after only a few years of the PD in the Mk2 Octavia!!! Certainly leaves a very sour taste in your mouth!

This problem convinced me to trade my 2007 PD vRS in for a 2010 CR vRS. All going well I collect it next week.

Why would anyone buy a vRS when they all have ESP and the dervs have this issue too?

We've had someone just now on the Audi forum have a failure for the second time, and the dealership now refuses to swap them on "goodwill" gesture and want to charge him. Then they said it was wear and tear! He's looking into court action, but we'll see how it goes.

VOSA on the other hand have updated me with this:

"Thank you for your e-mail.

At the moment, all I can tell you is that we are still investigating the

problem with the manufacturers"

We plough on, they won't get away with this one...
