VAG 170 PS Diesel Injector Failures - VOSA action

I have just rang my local Skoda dealer to try for a pre-emptive change out of my injectors. He said that they have done a couple of changeouts and Skoda have paid as a goodwill gesture but they are not offering pe-emptive change outs and that VAG don't take any notice of the forums!

I told him that I don't take anything as read and will in this instance send emails off to both VOSA (to register my concerns) and Skoda UK (to let them know that I have registered my concerns with VOSA).

I will update when I get a response.

Just to clarify I have not as yet had any problems with the injectors. But having been through the ABS sensor routine with Skoda think I know how the dance goes (and I won that one with 95% Skoda payment).

UPDATE;

Have had a reply from VOSA who seem to have got the wrong end of the stick as I think they think I have had a failure. They say they have an agreement with VAG to replace faulty injectors and then replace the 'faulty ones that have not yet failed' once they have stocks.

Skoda say they are not authorised to replace any that have not failed. I have emailed VOSA this response from Skoda to get clarification. To me, if VAG are replacing 'faulty injectors that have not yet failed' on cars that have had, say, 1 injector fail, then this is a pre-emptive replacement so why exclude cars that have not yet had a failure. Also, on safety grounds, why aren't VOSA forcing VAG down the full changout route for any affected models?

Oh, was also told by Skoda that on a failure car would go into limp home mode hence I would have full use of PAS etc. I have not bothered to correct him as they seem to just rubbish anything said on a forum as though we all go on here to make up stories!

UPDATE

Had a call back from dealer today. Have not spoke to them since forwarding the VOSA reply to them and being told that they only fix failed injectors. I did email VOSA back for some unambiguous clarification on the matter of pre-emptive change outs though but have not had a reply back personally yet. Anyway, the dealer said that he has had more discussions with Skoda and that they will indeed change out all 4 injectors ON A PRE-EMPTIVE basis. Unequivical proof that they are indeed willing to do this if you push the issue. Whether VOSA/Skoda UK and the dealer have had contact I don't know but it is a strange turnaround in a few days.

I rang Skoda to ask about pre-emptive replacement and they only offered a free diags check, which I've since had done (no issues reported of course). Skoda CS have left me a voicemail so when i call them back I shall ask further questions!! :swear:

Spoken to Skoda Customer Services today, they said I need to talk with the Skoda dealer that did the work and they'll submit the claim and arrange anything else regarding injectors being replaced, but the Service Manager is on holiday this week so can't do anything till next week (when I'm away on holiday)

I'd starting getting a bit twitchy as I'd heard nothing from anoyone Skoda related since last week, but then on Wednesday I had a phone call from Craig at Skoda UK to say that Sinclair Skoda Swansea had received the go ahead from Skoda UK to change the failed No. 1 injector plus replace the other 3 as they were the faulty siemens batch. He also said that unless there were problems with the parts being out of stock I would more than likely get it back by the end of the week.

Got home yesterday to find a letter from VOSA confirming the investigation into the fault and that if they had not already done so a VW Group representative would contact me to arrange for the injectors to be replaced and/or reimburse me for any work carried out on them, either at a recognised dealer or an independant garage. Also says in the letter that if there are any concerns this problem to contact the VW Group Customer Services, who will, if necessary, arrange for your vehicle to be inspected at an authorised repairer free of charge.

And within the last hour, I finally had the phone call that I'd been waiting for, from Sinclair's to say that the work has been completed and car is ready for collection - yippee!!! Despite being reassured a number of times I'm going to take the VOSA letter with me when I collect the car, just incase they do try to charge me for something!

Hopefully this'll be end of the saga but my advice to anyone who experiences the problem is to contact Skoda UK Customer Services before VOSA or anyone else as they've been fantastic at doing the leg work and keeping me informed.

UPDATE: For IRISH VRS owners: VW Ireland have replaced three injectors on my car after I had lodged a report to VOSA and had contacted them. two separate injectors failed in my car within 5 weeks of each other. Skoda UK have said that the will refund me for the work done to replace the initial faulty injector. :yes: BTW my car is an imported UK Model.

Will pass this onto customers in future.

We've replaced about 4 of these in the past on different cars..

It has changed again. VW bulletins now get you to check part numbers on the injectors and replace them for sx (140) Tx (170) engines

and the loom. The modified ones are continental NOT Siemens.. :thumbup:

One of my injectors went yesterday on the motorway on my octavia tdi vrs. I have been quoted £750 plus vat by local garage to replace injector and wiring loom. Is this not a little expensive?

I have email Skoda UK and just sent off my VOSA report. Lets see what happens.....

i didn't read the whole discussion but this is a problem over here in Hungary also and the 170 engines are that is more likely affected.

From reading Hungarian forums the situation is like this over here:

- 140 PD TDI engines were equipped with Bosch injection(PD) system, while 170s were equipped with Siemens injection system.

- Mostly the 170s' Siemens injection(PD) system died, havent heard lots of cases with the 140 engine.

- VW replaced the Siemesn injection system for free even if the car ran out of warranty and gave a 7 years warranty for the new system.

- Mostly Passats were affected here, cause not that many 170 Octavias are runnning here, mostly 140s.

This thread has been a total life saver for me. Had my injector and loom replaced after failure in Dec 2010 (wonderful xmas present that was). Got a bill for just over 1k that skoda paid a 40% goodwill gesture as the car was about 3 months out of warranty.

To get to the point, i came across this thread about 6 weeks ago, followed up the necessary channels and now have 4 spanking new injectors and a full £600 refund from them. Thanks to all taking part in this thread!

When i called skoda uk to enquire about them now being aware of this fault, it was obvious they know they don't have a leg to stand on and everything got sorted asap.

As I understand it you have to wait for a fault. But I might be wrong.

I emailed VOSA the other day to enquire further about pre-emptive swap outs.

I've heard back that the VW group are currently dealing with those vehicles that have suffered a failure already as stocks of replacement injectors are limited. Once failed injectors have been replaced and more stocks are available, they will then address those requiring pre-emptive work. I don't know whether this will be an official recall or whether they will respond to those that shout loudest... I've been told that a contact at VW will contact me to sort me out!

I suggest all those that have not yet suffered a failure contact VOSA via email to register your concern stating that you wish for a pre-emptive swap. Will get you on "a list" of sorts.

as of now there are 4183 03G 130 073 TX injectors at the main VAG depot

i only want 4 :) So a thousand and something vehicles could be dealt with.... i guess there are one or two more than that affected but no where near as many have failed - yet!

What about the wiring loom stock?

As I understand it you have to wait for a fault. But I might be wrong.

I have just had mine changed as a PRE-EMPTIVE measure. Have spoken to VOSA who say that VAG have agreed to do this but the message was a little slow getting through to Skoda UK. My dealer initially said they could not help but two days later rang me back to arrange the job as they had been authorised to do so. It will not be a recall they say but as stated done for customers who raise concerns.

Email to Skoda UK and VOSA. Ring dealer 1st actually as they may get permission straight away without having to involve anyone else.

Am hoping mine will be done pre-emptively also.

After e-mailing VOSA I got an e-mail reply from John Fitch confirming that they were aware of the problem, that VAG have had problems with supply and that VAG are committed to getting cars with failures back on the road before they can replace other customers injectors.

John also said that he was not able to force replacement of my injectors, but he would forward my e-mail to Skoda and gave me two contact names in Skoda customer services for me to contact.

Unfortunately both contacts are unavailable till Monday - I have been promised a call back then and have been given a reference number.....

I also called in at the dealers yesterday to see what they knew about it, but being the silly season anyone who should know was on holiday...

Vosa can't force???
