Shell V-Power Diesel

Featured Replies

I've just started my second tank of Shell VP Diesel and all seems well. I have noticed that the engine temp gauge rises 20%-30% quicker from a cold start, this seems to help fuel economy a bit too. Although the fuel switch has coincided with some unusually warm weather it was only 6degC this morning and I got the same response. Should I be worried about faster heating times, I can't see why or how a 'better' fuel could make a difference like this?

Warmer weather will make the car warm up quicker, no problems there - VPower diesel is only really good for cleaning bits, not worth the 10p more a litre really!

Petrol on the other hand gives more MPG and better power on turbo'd cars for example.

I know it isn't a higher octane but even on cool mornings it's heating quicker.

Only 5p/L for me.

Its 5p a litre more not 10p. It does have a lot of additives in which will help a lot with the PD engine, in particular keeping the EGR valve clean, and if that is clean the rest of the engine will be...so will be more economical and offer more performance over supermarket fuel.

The question is whether this could be acheived with the Shell Fuel Save diesel.

I will always use Shell as i always get 60-80 more miles to a tank with it then smart price or value diesel. I tend to just fill up with the fuel save diesel now as i notice no difference over the V-Power but will occasionally give it a tank full of V

I put Smart price diesel in the other week and it was awful in my CR....MPG dropped as low as 40mpg on some routes which i normally get 50+. So whatever Shell are adding to their fuel it works!

No octane in diesel, but I'm being picky ;)

I trialled it, but went back to std Shell (before Fuel Save) and use Millers. And I still use Millers with the Fuel Save stuff. I find it helps smoothness, cuts down a bit on smoke under full load, and the MPG is marginally better.

Have sporadically used V-power with mine for the last 3.5 years.

MPG improvement? None noticable - right foot makes a much bigger difference than a fuel ever will.

More power? None noticable.

More torque? Probably not.

Why I like it? It makes it so smoooooooth.. Almost forget you're driving a diesel at times. Quieter, revs nicer, its just nice. I used it exclusively for about 6 months, and after switching back to 'normal' diesel, I honestly thought something had gone wrong on the engine.

Is it worth the extra 5-10p? Definately if you're trying to sell the car :giggle:

You are correct there.

Never use it..Just not worth the extra cost per litre IMO

I use Millers too..Not noticed much difference betwen any of the diesel fuels.

I usually fill up with Jet...Seems ok.

One filled up wth Shell VPower..No difference detected..apart from more going from my wallet!!

I use it exclusively now and it seems smoother. I get really good mpg too, sometimes over 600 miles from a full tank.

I've just watched the video from in the car behind me at the Brisky track day and there is no obvious smoke which is impressive considering it's mapped to 170hp & 410nm.

Always use Shell unless I'm 'caught short' (although I'm short all the time :giggle: ).

If it's available I'll stick V-Power in - the extra cost doesn't bother me as I only fill up about once a month - like to use it for its supposed cleansing qualities (don't notice any difference in performance or mpg).

i only ever use shell fuel with my vrs, i usually give it a tank of v power every month to just clean the engine out abit, anybody joined the shell club and had any vouchers come thru?

I've used V-Power diesel since I owned the car but last night I was really low and couldn't find any so I had a tank of normal Texaco diesel and I haven't noticed any chance. It has me doubting it...

Yeah usually get a £5 voucher every couple of months.

Yeah usually get a £5 voucher every couple of months.

ahh right ive got like 400 points on my account and nothing come through, maybe i need more :L

You need a minimum of £2.50 worth of points before you get vouchers otherwise it keeps rolling until you do. I emailed them about mine, had none for a year lol Got £15 worth of points now :)

How many points do u need before they give u a 2.50 voucher?

500 I think...

1 point per 1 litre iirc

VPower is double points, one good thing about ordering the new Fabia vRS I suppose lol :D

Weeey im nearly there then :p lol

I use nothin but v power diesel.and bein in theclub the vouchers you get back makes up for the cost really

I tried a tank of V-Power and it 'seemed' to produce more smoke...but it can be hard to tell as the rear window is tinted.

With any fuel change, be it a different supplier/type or the use of an additive, it'll need at least two tanks for any change to become apparent.

i travelled to england to get mine and filled it with v-power before the trip back and it smoked quite a bit on start up, now i use bp ultimate as it has higher cetane than v-power plus no shells near me. now ive virtually no smoke :) bp ultimate is better :) holds higher pressure in the cylinder for longer which is better and allows for more complete combustion so hence the no smoke

I usually get £30 vouchers :giggle:

Wait :wonder:

I drive a lot.

lol :)

I used to be a cynic about the premium diesels and the difference between supermarket fuels and premium brands - I didn't think there was any difference.

However, my other car is a Rover 75 that's done 160k. A few months ago it started 'coughing' occasionally and after much messing around trying to diagnose the cause, I came to the conclusion that the injectors needed replacing.

The car isn't worth that much and I don't want to fork out for new injectors, so in desperation I gave it a double dose of Wynns Injector Cleaner and then I've run it on a few tanks of V-Power since. It now seems to have nearly cured the problem, so I think the V-Power has basically cleaned up the fuelling system (or the Wynns). I'm hoping that a few more tanks of V-Power will get rid of the problem for good.

On my Fabia, I think I'll fill up with V-Power every 4th fillup and perhaps put in some fuel system cleaner once a year - just to keep the fuel system clean.

Cheers

Al
