Shell Fuelsave

Featured Replies

This weekend travelled to Birmingham from Cornwall -averaged 37mpg using Sainsbury's super-97. Then switched to Shell 'Fuelsave' and managed 44mpg from Birmingham to Cardiff then 42mpg from Cardiff back to Cornwall -well happy with that! Decided to give fuelsave a go as it was £1.33/L as opposed to £1.40 for V-power.

Think I'm going to continue on the fuelsave to see if it is also any better on my work commute (normally 34mpg mix of urban and A-roads over about 20 miles running Sainsbury 97).

Didn't notice any drop in performance on the fuelsave and engine ran really sweet....

You so realise Birmingham to Cardiff is all downhill :giggle:

In all seriousnees... I run mine on Shell Fuelsave and it seems to love it

I used to use the supermarket sludge, then when I bought the 2 fabia's I switched to fuelsave shell diesel, car feels good and the 1.4 tdi used to be run on ordinary diesel swapped to shell and definate runs better, so will always use shell and redex

so no problems using this fuel as the the recommended 98 ron fuel?

i have an fiesta st at the moment and use fuel save all the time and no problems, i am due to get my vrs in few weeks and was going to switch to vpower due to skodas recommendations, however if it runs fun with no loss of power on fuelsave i would rather use that

there have been numerous posts about loss of power etc etc... but I do remember seeing a post about a gent who actualy rang SUK and they said the performance difference is negligable  hence I'm saving 6p a litre on fuel and not really noticing any "real world" difference.

It seems a bit Strange that Skoda go to the trouble of years of testing and research then stick a sticker on the fuel filler cap " RON 98 " then say " yep, stick cr@p in it ' it won't make much of a difference"

Just a though.....................

fair point Mr Goldfinger...

I'll be feeding mine RON98 exclusively thanks :) I didn't buy a vRS to stick "fuelsave" in it.

I'd have kept my diesel if I was that bothered.

I'm not disputing the e-mail, I just find it strange that Skoda say put 95 Ron in when It clearly states 98,

Why buy a Hot Hatch then stick rubbish in it, a full tank is only a couple of quid extra

Just my 2p's worth

Vrs needs the higher Ron fuel would never put anything else , some people say it's fine on 95. Ron but anything that has a turbo and supercharger needs the better fuel

I see your point AG

I'm gonna put it to the test from tomorrow as I need to fill up :)

I always use at least 97 (BP ultimate) and v-power when I'm passing a shell station... its a fact that the computers will retard the ignition to prevent "pinking" if you put 95 in, so you are not getting what all the clever engineers designed the engine for, to me that meens its was a wrong decision to choose that engine in the first place, if you want to put 95 in, you are compromising it.

I have used it once when caught short (no fuel and no super!) it ran ok, but the economy was 5 mpg down (I tested it... was all motorway rund back from WSM, £10 of 95 in indicated 80mph, and got 38mpg, filled up next services with 97 (texaco super i think) and proceeded up the same motorway at the same speed to 43mpg.....)

I didn't notice a loss of performance, because I wasn't using the performance, just cruising up the motorway, but if you retard the ignition, you loose performance..

I think we have been here before 95 RON petrol or better

If it wasn't for the lead i could be tempted to try AVGAS

shell all the way.

I'm just trying to reconcile "vRS owner" and "fuelsave" in the same post...

Bought wrong car, perhaps?!

Agree with Mr G above. Well Said Again.

We have done this to death elsewhere with 95 vs 97/98 ron, hopefully this thread wont go the same way as a Fuelsave vs 97/98 ron where people getting very aggressive.

Good luck with the Fuelsave usage, but not for me. V Power only or BP Ultimate/Esso Supreme 97 if I cant get V Power.

I can get VPower locally, may cost about £1.42 a litre though.

I think Sainsburys RON98 is available for £1.39 a litre, but for the sake of 3p a litre, I'd be better off with VPower....

I'm not massively worried about fuel economy, I bought the vRS mainly for its bargain performance.

Was just reporting my findings when trying out a different fuel. Agree this topic has been done to death in various forms tho! :giggle:

Mate this vRS is positively frugal compared to my old Focus ST...!

At the end of the day since I picked up the vRS I've been using super-unleaded like most folks on here. Tried out the shell 'fuelsave' and found I had better fuel economy, no noticeable loss in power/performance and more money in my wallet -sounds like a win-win situation? :wonder:

You buy a VRS for the performance... why put 95RON in the car?

You wouldn't put the wrong oil in so why put the wrong fuel?

Its a no brainer to me and mine will certainly only have 98 in the tank

Oh, please don't think I am having a go - just saying what I will be doing.

However, it is very interesting to note that it *does*, *actually*....... save fuel

Thats the whole point mate - there was no drop in performance.

I've been using super-unleaded until now but tried the Shell 'fuelsave' and was quite pleased with it. The whole 95 vs 98 debate is soooo old now...... but surprise surprise more people coming out of the woodwork with predictions of doom if you dare to use it! :giggle:

No problems mate I'm all for having the debate its what forums are for.

you'll love the vRS when you get it, cracking car

I think I'll probably continue to use 98 most of the time but use the Fuelsave option for motorway journeys.

I'm going to be waiting about 14 weeks for mine apparently.

Long wait is long.

So the Verdict is:--

98 RON or 95 ??
