BROADBAND DROPS OFF AND SLOW SPEED

Featured Replies

After 3 weeks of trying to sort with the experts , i have come to the obviuous place for answers . Th Broadband ( Plusnet ) had been slow and droping out on a regular basis had BT in to check phone line No probs they say , had plusnet check at their end twice no prob , telling me it is on my side of the house ,and will charge for a call out . so have replaced modem , all wires , and still the same . An obvious prob top me is when i make a phone call , there is a noisy line also to make the internet connect i get that old adsl dial tone in the background , internet then connects .Keep it running with a download and its ok put the phone down and it may or may not diconnect the internet . Broadband light on modem flashes when it should be on constant . Now some may say filter problem , but i have had a master filter fitted to the BT socket which gives a dedicated ADSL line and phone line already filtered . and the problem was the same befor this was fitted and after . Have you any ideas before i give up and go to a new provider . Thanks

Remove the front of your master socket and connect the broadband directly to the socket underneath. That will test/eliminate your house wiring.

Edit: Plug in without the filters as well

Sounds like a duff microfilter somewhere, had a simillar issue and replacing the microfilter with a more expensive active one instead of passive fixed the problem.

Done that no difference

Done that , purchased 1 from Clarity integrated ADSL filter replaces the fron cover of the BT socket with Integrated Microfilter and dedicated BT Line , no difference

A friend had this problem with plusnet. Changed everything and it still didn't work properly. Think his was due to the length of the local loop, but going fibre was about the only thing that fixed his. That said, his was always bad, whereas I dunno if yours used to work properly or not.

Was consistently ok up till about a month ago , had not changed anything and it all went the wrong way , as mentioned above , now thinking to move and let another provider sort it out .

If wireless have you tried all the channels? If on Android mobile, use wifi analyzer to check for channel conflicts

I assume that you're on an old BT copper twisted pair to the exchange ?

Had a lot of rain recently ? If so, underground cabling/roadside boxes may be wet and shorting out various connections intermittently. Have you ordinary voice telephone, if that's crackly that might give you an indication that there is something wrong beyond your master wall socket ?

Have a look at the noise margin on your modem system statistics page. If your further away than 3 Kms from the exchange and using Rate Adaptive synchronous signalling (That's usually the case for download speeds up to 8 MB/sec) then signal to noise ratio becomes increasingly more important the further away you are.

http://www.kitz.co.uk/adsl/linestats.htm

Be aware that BT are moving a lot of equipment around both in the exchanges and roadside boxes in order to install Infinity. And they are running behind programme schedule (despite what the advertising infers) which gives their managers even more reason not to admit that disruption of service is down to them. Isn't Plusnet the poor relation of BT Broadband, so they might be down the pecking order as against ordinary BT Broadband custoners when it comes to getting service restored.

As a BT Broadband customer, I lost signal (without notice) on at least three occasions at the end of last year, I suspect for this reason (Though BT wouldn't admit it) and got compensated accordingly. The only reason i new something was going on because the Infinity roll-out website said it was going on and because I observed new cables being laid and roadside boxes being installed.

BT also wanted to move me off the open term Classic Broadband contract (Throttled to 2Mb) I had been on since 2002 (Fixed price) and put me on a termed contract (Price can be adjusted at 18 month interval) and the kit changeover provided them with the excuse to encourage me to swop service type by disrupting the service(Cynical ? moi ?)

So I'm now on the BT max DSL service (ADSL 2 + signalling?)@ 5 MB/sec (Despite being less than 3Kms from the exchange) and have a brand new Home hub in place of the BT Voyager 2100, which although the latter was rated to 8MB/sec wouldn't work properly with the new DSLAMS installed in the exchanges for Infinity (Not unless the engineer tweaked my connection - and the adjustment was lost every time they installed another new piece of kit or software, so in the end, I gave-up and just changed the service and modem) - I think the BT Home Hub is more tolerant of low signal to noise margins - Home Hub runs happily, after training, on 5Db noise margin down and up, whereas the BT Voyager used to have problems with anything less than 10 Db.

That distance will be as the crow flies, your line will take a longer route and if its like mine then it could be quiet a bit longer. I am as the crow flies about 1.5 miles from the exchange, but my line is more than 2 miles long. I currently have a noise ratio of 6db and get a 4meg connection. I only just discovered I could get 4meg, I moved the router from by the TV to another part of the room away from any electrical disturbance and my speed shot up from 1.5 to 4 meg.

Or inSSIDer on a PC.
