I'm guessing I've damaged my car

Featured Replies

Well, went to halfrauds today to get some oil, and surprise f***ing surprise they dont have any 505 01 spec.

Checked the oil again this morning and its a good 4-5 mm below the minimum allowable level.

I tell you, I like the car, but its the last time I buy a VAG product. I am sick to death of the ridiculous servicing costs, crap dealers and the use of esoteric products like this oil that cannot be obtained anywhere except VAG dealers who then proceed to rip your eyes out for it.

I am now left with an expensive crock of a car thats probably gonna die prematurely.

Paul, with respect, aren't you being a bit melodramatic?

Ross has told you to put some "other" oil in to get you by until you get the correct PD oil, and to be totally blunt, you should have bought a top-up bottle long before now.

Yor really don't have anyone to blame but yourself.

No it won't and just stick any oil in it to bring the dipstick up to just above maximum if it's very low & you haven't any of the recommended stuff to hand.

Make sure you check the level when the engine's 'cold', say around 10 minutes after running the engine, and on a flat surface as well to verify the oil level before topping up.

Looks like I'm going to have to do that, even despite my reservations about putting in oil the book tells you not to.

Well I'm not sure what is an accurate reading - i thought our drive was flat, but when I pulled onto the forecourt before I got a different reading, yet the car was not warmed fully...

Oh and Geoff for what its worth I did have spare oil that I bought months ago, I know for a fact I never used it all, and yet now its not there. :thumbdwn:

I've just been told by one garage that 506 01 would also work, and that the VAG dealers only tell you 505 01 because its not widely available to make you buy it off them.

That wouldnt surprise me with those (VAG) greedy f***ers.

506.1 will work.. i bought a bottle from halfrauds to top mine up when needed.

I got some from Ask in Leeds, they will post you the correct stuff if you contact them.

Thats what I just did :)

No warning lights on the dash though, and if the manual is to be believed then there is nothing to worry about. Did another before reading and it was at the minimum level on the dipstick, so I had 3 slightly varying readings on 3 slightly varying surfaces  :o

My Fabia vRS handbook quite clearly states that it is okay to TOP UP the car with non PD oil, just not to fill it after an oil change with the stuff.

The car will be fine. If you think of the amount of company car drivers driving PD engines, never checking the oil and then filling it with rubbish when the light comes on...There is no way the engine is that fragile.

Its fine

Buy a petrol! :)

What a 'crock' of ****.

506.01 is variable oil, of course its OK to use.

505.01 is fixed oil so dont be suprised if your dealer recommends it for a Fabia, they are on fixed servicing.

Sorry, just what I was told, wasnt stating it as being the truth.

Nevertheless it would help if it was relatively easy to get this stuff...

Forget Halfrauds! Waste of time! Go into any decent local motor factors - normally scattered around any decent trading estate / industrial estate, and get some Millers XFE PD. No point in messing about - I got myself another 5 litres yesterday! Half the price of my dealer's oil I think.

(and use any old cr4ppy oil as a top up if you have to. ;) Better that, than an engine rebuild :D)

edit: Just thought is cr4p not a strong enough word for the swear filter...just wondering if it is, perhaps this variation should be added like the s h 1 t is. :)

Without wishing to stir matters any more, its no big secret that the oil gets used during the first 10k or so miles.

Must admit after my recent oil scare I am a bit parnoid and check it weekly and after long drives... :(

I think if the oil light hasnt come on then safe to say your engine will be fine

HTH a little bit

Mines done nearly 17,000 miles mate.

When It comes to the 505.01 oil, I got 1 Litre from a VW dealer & was STUNG for

Absolutely - we have an audi a3 pd as a pool car and I know its regularly been driven with the oil light on. The thing gets hammered everywhere - 100,000 miles so far and its still going strong.

I havent had a VW group TDI/PD that hasnt used any oil in the first 6-8k, then nothing at all. (and thats 6 engines)

isnt there a group buy on oil at the mo?

havent paid much attention, cause i dont need any but im sure there is

Mine has been running on 506.1 oil since it's 10k service. Bought from Halfords. Now on 27,500 and not a problem engine wise so far. Castrol SLX II Super Longlife. ;)

Castrol SLX II Super Longlife

Thats what we fill all PD engines with. Saves us having so many oils on pump in the workshop.

As it exceeds 505.01 there aint a problem.

I've been using Castrol Magnatec in my Furby vRS because I do a lot of short journey's for work and as we all know they take ages to warm up (roughly 8-10 miles at 50 mph for mine). I'm assured by people that it's the best stuff given the nature of my driving and that it exceeds the specification recommended by Skoda.

10k service is booked and I have arraged to supply my own oil so it's the same stuff that I will top up with. I belive that's it's cheaper than the original oil as well. Average seems to be 4.5 Ltr's for about

Err no it doesnt, still your engine, your choice.

But be warned if your not using the correct oil and you engine is damaged because of it, your bill.
