All season tyres a good compromise?

Featured Replies

Realistically, I'd just go for the 215. I, and others here, have looked, asked and looked again and asked again (including insurance companies, tyre companies and manufacturers and Skoda UK (and Skoda further abroad) in order to get an accepted, acceptable and practical size for the winter's and that's what I / we / they arrived at. All the aforegoing having regard to size relative to the standard 17 inch tyre and not forgetting the 215 is fitted as standard to lower spec. Yetii.

I'm a worryer and if I sleep at night, then anyone else ought to be able to :)

Okay, I guess there's no point me worrying about it either. :peek:

I'll just get a set of 215/60/R16s.

Thanks for replying.

You're very welcome...

Sorry to jump on this and I know it's not a really a Yeti question but has anyone used both Vredestein Sportrac3 and Vredestein Quatrac's?

I currently have Sportrac3 on the Oct 4x4x and they have been a great tyre - quiet and grippy, fantastic in the wet and really very good in the snow. However, they are coming up for changing so I was considering the Quatracs as an alternative but am not so keen on the non-directional tread and the potential for them to be noisier.

Any comments?

Don't apologise. As someone who will be buying all season tyres shortly I am very interested to hear your comments and also to see the answer to your question. Keep them coming.

Is anyone running All Season tyres on 2WD Yeti's? So far most people using them seem to be 4WD. I am wondering for my next Yeti whether a 2WD version, giving better mpg, on All Season tyres would give me the same winter grip as my 4WD Yeti on summer tyres.

Hi Skomaz

I have been running on Quatrac 3 `s on the Octavia since last November and swapped them back to front 6 weeks ago after 9000 miles. They seemed an excellent choice and performed very well and made a big difference in last winters snow and are fine in normal driving but are not available in the correct size for my upcoming Yeti. All season would appear a very good compromise and much more convenient rather than full winters. We got quite a lot of snow and ice here last winter and they seem to be wearing well although would not expect to get much more than 20000 miles out of all 4 out of them even with swapping. I understand that once down to 4/5mm this type of tyre certainly loses some of its ability in snow and slush.I have driven on winter tyres in the past but could not fault these and ventured in places wher I would have been daft to try on ann summers.Noise wise seem ok but I have the radio on most of the time!

Cheers

THanks for that - I did really well in the Octy the last couple of years with the Sportrac3's on - including ploughing through about 1 foot of virgn snow to get out of my estate (the 'proper' 4x4's were the only otehrs getting out). But fancy the extra security of the Quatracs given I have elderley relatives I often need to get to. My real concern is whether they are noisy in comparison as I'd have to put up with that for the rest of the year?

Hi Mark

Must say I have not found any problem noise wise and they do get good test reports and price wise were around £80 each.

Cheers

Thanks for the good advise for Vredestein Quatrac 3.

This is my choise, too ... for the future, in autumn.

215 60 R16.

Yes and they are performing well. :D

Ideal compromise for us. We don't need the 4x4 version for winter with these tyres.

It means a £4000 saving over a 4x4 diesel due to the extra step up in cost for the 4x4 option and the diesel engine.

Plus our little 1.2 petrol DSG is 185kg lighter than the diesel 4x4 DSG option.

So saving that amount of weight means the fuel economy figures are almost the same! (only petrol is cheaper :giggle: )

Only downside is higher percentage depreciation, but with a £4k saving it'll still lose less overall IMO.

On this basis I'd go 2wd and good tyres again, even though I really wanted a 4x4 at first, but couldn't buy one as the diesel DSG wasn't on sale.

My wife can only drive an auto.

I've been looking at so many forum threads, user and other tests of tyres the last few weeks my head is spinning.

As my original tyres - Pirellis - are going to need changing very soon (26+ Thousand miles), I was planning on a set of winter tyres. Of course, I'd be looking at a set of steelies with winters but then would need to replace the Pirellis anyway come summer. I've come to the conclusion that a compromise, although a seemingly very good one, would be the Goodyear Vector 4Seasons. They appear to do very well in tests for good all-round performance and, according to some tests I have seen, in the snow and ice are comparable to a mid-range winter tyre. As I don't intend heading for the mountains but would like a more sure-footed tyre for winter, these look to be the way to go. As they meet the German winter tyre requirements too, they appear to be a good option.

They are also available in the size I need, without having to go to a winter tyre / wheel size drop (205/55/16), are available in load rating 94 and speed rating V (as opposed to W on the pirellis - but I never travel at those velocities!).

Think I'll get an order in soon, before we get to the winter weather and the price goes up and availability goes down.

Keep us updated on how much they were, where you got them from and then how they perform. I am about 3-4,000 miles from changing my tyres to all season ones and I will do the same when the time comes. The more info we can all provide the better the forum becomes
