MDI anyone?

Featured Replies

Which unit did you make work with this?

In other words does it make a Bolero a full function I pod unit?

Sorry for being ignorant but what does this do that Bluetooth won't?

It should offer a higher quality, wired solution for accessing the iPod, as well as external hard drives etc in the yeti B)

Merlinman - so where does this actual mdi port get located? I thought that the Irish Yeti had It in the central console area? Thanks for the link.

The 'loom' fits as a 'sandwich' into the back of the Bolero. It's a few minutes job to pull the radio out and fit the loom.

Then thread it through to the glove box area. I fitted mine on the top of the glovebox with double sided tape and cable ties and fed the extension cable through into the glovebox.

I'm able to connect/control ipod, shuffle , MP3 player, portable hard drive or memory stick via Bolero. Charges iPod too!

Also updated MDI software successfully recently via memory stick.

No coding needed either

Wow - thanks for the info.

Now, would it be the same parts for mine ie connecting to the Columbus unit instead of a bolero? :wonder:

I see no reason why not - the MDI is available on several other Skoda/VAG cars with Columbus/RNS510 Sat Navs?

£185 option on Octavia/Superb, for instance.

Is it difficult to fit? I thought I needed one until I got the SD thing working OK. Still annoyed at AAC loss-less though. Longer trips might need an ipod

Being a bit of a luddite, why is this different to the in-put plug in the central arm rest? We plug Sheila's mp3 player into that and it works perfectly through the Bolero unit.

Sound quality is better over the mdi and you have no way of controlling your devices via the 3.5mm jack. You have full control of it though via the mdi, and the navigation is displayed on the head unit. :)

Think I'll stay a luddite. It works for us!

I am not being rude, but why would you want to spend £130 and dismantle your dashboard when a £7.90 SD card delivered free from Amazon can be loaded with over 2000 Mp3 tracks and simply slotted into the front of the Bolero Unit. Full control, choice of Artist,Album, Track is via the touch screen.

I've just ordered a kit-Merlinman, what software upgrade is required if any?

I dont think anyone would take your comment as being rude. :)

If you have the facility of the later head units with SD card slot (earlier ones could only read 2gb cards as the largest size and they werent that fast to access!) then there arent many benefits that an MDI will bring.

I guess id simply prefer to have my entire home audio collection accessible from one location and even my 32gb cards cant give me that so I occasionally find I have to route around in the centre console/armrest/glovebox for a different card. SD cards also have limitations that portable media via the MDI doesnt have I believe ie max 2048 objects on a card, be it folders, files etc.

Id like to know if there is a sound quality advantage but Im guessing not as its all digital and gets processed by the same head unit.

I'm not at all unhappy with my MDI. I have 64gb of my music instantly on tap, fully displayed and all my playlists, genres, albums, artist etc instantly accessible by touchscreen, and my iPod/iPhone is kept fully charged.

I can also connect other media sources just by plugging in.

Suits my needs perfectly ;-)

We all have different preferences!

As said I'll stick with the SD card, especially as neither of us have an iPod, just Sheila with a cheap mp3 player she won.

Currently it is mostly my music on the SD card, but Sheila has now said she wants her "stuff" put on one as well. Amazon had a nice offer the other night so I shall be on there tonight.

One thing. To consider with the SD card is - although the Bolero will read 32gb cards, there is a limit on the total nber of files the Bolero will handle.

A 32gb card holds in the region of 4000 average sized mp3 music files. The Bolero will only read about 2000.

This has been confirmed by Skoda CZ.

There is a comprehensive thread in the IC group. Worth a look.

And?

Sorry but I don't see a problem with the SD card. 2000 files is a lot of tracks. At an average of 5 minutes per track that is over 150 hours of music!! I don't think I possess that much!!

Why does everything have to be so stupidly complicated??

Exactly, I have an 8gb SD card and I've got my entire music collection on it with room to spare. I know I don't have the biggest collection in the world but how much choice do you want? Don't forget there are a few radio stations as well! :)

And you can still have 6 CD's!! :giggle:

I have just invested in this kit and the best explanation I can give for those who have found alternatives which satisfy their need is that it is a generational thing.

Over my last few cars I have had and failed to use a variety of solutions involving carrying plastic discs around including 6, 10 and 12 disc players. I have, since fitting my last Seat with an Alpine iPod head unit, realised that an effectively infinitely capacious and fully organisable and searchable music system which also powers my home system and can be slipped into a shirt pocket to run headphones wherever I want is valuable. I can access an infinite supply of new material wherever broadband is available and on a whim acquire new tracks at modest cost.

So it is a thing for the computer using younger generation. At the weekend I had a fancy for the Foo Fighters "Learning to fly"-Click and I have it. On holiday last year I felt the need to add "Gasoline Alley" to my collection-done there and then.

If I were middle aged I suppose I'd find it impenetrable.

By the way, I'm 58.

With you on this JCP ( and I'm 63).

The real point is that Skoda are being a bit disingenuous in the information they provide. Ie they state the Bolero will read a 32gb card ( which it will). It just won't read all of it if the information (whether it is music, text, or whatever) is held in more than 2000 files.
