How do you clean a windscreen?

Featured Replies

...and no im not talking about pulling back the wiper stalk and spraying the outside! :p

I'd noticed a relatively thin film of dirt and grime on the inside of the windscreen during the recent sunny weather.

Cleverly I used a jumper to wipe it all away - fine and dandt until the sun came out and the whirls made it look like the screen was made of perspex, and then more recently in the torrential down pours the screen fogged up instantly!

I invested in a glass cleaning cloth from Tesco - a spongey affair with loads of holes in - and broke and out the windolene.

Again everything looks perfect and in the sun its great, however the slightest bit of mositure in the car and the screen fogs immediately.

Help!

A bit of Fast Glass (Autoglym) on a microfibre cloth seems to do the job.

I like Ajax (the plain clear version with the ammonia smell) and paper towel.

Windowlene was a worse mistake than the jumper!

+1 on both of those

I am always on the look out for a good screen cleaner.

I've used many things, MER, Fast Glass, AG Glass polish, even industrial IPA. Not one of them seams to work properly. I also find the they seam make the glass steam up very quickly.

I have tried all the upmarket stuff, but my favourite is Mr Muscle glass cleaner and good quality kitchen paper, I always do it twice as i always miss a bit first time around.

AG Glass Polish for a decent job that really seems to break down the grime. AG Fast Glass for a quicker, slightly less effective job imo.

Megs glass cleaner and a microfibre.....a clean microfibre that has been washed with no fabric softener. No marks whatsoever and i am VERY picky about a smear/mark free finish.

Used AG glass polish/cleaners in past....now just use a small sponge dipped in fairy liquid in warm water.....then rinse with clean water then polish dry with a clean teatowel......or if really bad then use use meths in a bowl of warm water and then polish dry with teatowel......same for outside!!! Seems a lot of effort compared to wipe on, buff off?! :giggle:

Ha i know what you mean, but you really should try the Meguairs Glass Cleaner - it is expensive but its so quick and easy!

I do spend a bit of time I know.......but it is cheaper than buying product....leaves the money for the Shell Vpower fuel, Mobil 1 oil, Toyo T1R tyres, etc, etc,...... I spend too much on polish as it is anyway!!! :giggle:

I get meths in 5lt containers anyway, as it really cheap then!..........that sounds really bad like I'm an econotramp!!!! :S

+ 1 for both of these. Also I think it's worth wearing a pair of surgical gloves to prevent moisture from your hands getting on the cloth/glass.

Also a little dab of de-ionised water will leave a streak free finish when removing products like Rain X

+1 on this route

For me the Megs Glass Cleaner is the best one I have tried but it's also key to use a 'Glass Cleaning' cloth, don't feel that microfibre's help with glass cleaning but that may just be me........

Actually i do use a Kent Glass Cleaning cloth from Asda but prior to that i have used MF's and as long as they are clean they are OK.

Think the biggest problems with microfibre is the fibre's they can leave behind, which on glass is very obvious, hence my preference for the 'glass cleaning' cloths......

'glass cleaning' cloths

Those are the spongey ones with holes in?

I found my one of those just dried out and got even streakier :S

think i'll try the paper route first with just fairy and water (definitely no windowlene) and see how it goes

Maybe invest furter should it still be poop
