Clicky / clunky gear stick

Featured Replies

I have just bought a new Octavia 1.6 MPI SE - Overall the car is excellent even with the 1.6 MPI engine which is a lot better than I thought it would be. The only niggle I have is that the gear stick is clunky /clicky, it is not the gear box as it is ok if you hold the gear stick at the base of the lever and change gear.It is not a major problem but annoying, is this the norm for the Octavia or should I get it altered?

My last car was a Saab 9-3 and the Octavia is better built and surprisingly has a higher MPG even though the Saab was a diesel and the 1.6 MPI is not the most efficient petrol engine ( Saab only gave an average of 38MPG) The Saab used to frustrate me up with all its rattles and breakdowns not to mention the DPF problems so I am hoping the Skoda will be a more reliable car.

I have the same problem in my Fl RS!!...the gear change isn tvery pleasant at all!!...the keep it smooth you have the ever so gently guide it into gear!!....not what you would expect from an RS!!

Might be worth a gear oil change if it's been >50k miles since the last one. Certainly can't hurt if you're using genuine fluid and it's a cheap first step.

It might also be worth getting the **** wires adjusted to make sure they are not making things worse.

The gear box appears to be ok, I think it is a poorly fitted gear knob.

My gear change was bad for about the first 3000 miles, now 5000 and much improved.

I thought that's what you were sayong. Mine was the same (used car) It made a click when changing gear. The dealer solved it before delivery. I now understand that it was a simple job. The plastic surrounding the gear knob gater has to come off. The gater is pulled up to expose the bottom of the gear knob. Instead of screwing onto the lever the knob is pushed on and then a circlip secures it. I think that is what is loose on yours. Sould be a DIY job, otherwise a few minutes with a mechanic.

Mine just seems very clunky when it goes between third and fourth. Its not very positive as it goes in, it seems as if its the gear linkage under the gaiter, it makes it feel very cheap!!

Thank you for the reply, that seems feasible. I will take it to the garage for them to have a look at it.

Hi

Must say think FriendlyFire is right, as just had my mpi 1.6 a few weeks and I can't believe how good the gear change is.

I took the the car into the dealership this morning. The circlip was in place so they tried some silicon spray to lubricate the lever but the clicky sound was still there. The technician thinks it is in the mechanism so he has booked it in next week for it to be removed and checked but it looks like I might need a new system. I hope this is a blip as the Saab used to wind me up with all its problems.

Been driving Skoda for 9.5 years, apart from consumables (brake pads, servicing and exhuast) actual problems amount to a failed central locking solenoid and a rear wiper motor.

It will all come good.

Our 2010 VRS CR has the same clicky gearstick noise - very annoying. It seems to be better when it is raining which would point to lubrication. The dealers had it in and allegedly stripped it down and lubed the mechanism. It was slightly better but still not right. Will maybe take it back in or try another dealer as I cant remember it doing it when we got the car.

Cheers

Dave

My 2010 vrs oil burner has the same clicky problem.I pulled the gaiter up and messed about with the clip which briefly solved the problem. Will wait for first service and get them to take a look.It is very annoying and does spoil the gear change.

  • 1 year later...

My son took his Octavia in for its first year service and Hayselden of Doncaster supposedly told him the click was because of a small hole in the exhaust!!?. They said that to fix it they would have to strip something down and because "exhausts are only covered for 6 months on brand new cars" then my son would have to pay £200 if the part is covered by warranty or £600 if not. And they wont know until they've done the job. :wonder:

I'm hearing this story from my son who is not sure what they said exactly - apart from it would cost him dear to fix a click and I'm thinking WTF. Also appears that despite asking and paying for a variable regime service, the on board computer says next service due in 10,000 miles!

If this is a genuine story then it looks like my next car's a Toyota.

No

Had the same problem with mine just after i got it, took it back to dealer and they said the prob was caused by the clips inside the stick, they ordered up a replacement stick and that cured the issue, i then replaced it again myself with an s line stick and still have no issue

Mine was clunky and often wouldn't go into hear sometimes. Turned out it was the linkages needed replacing. Dealer did this FOC

Mines clunks and feels like a 500,000 mile gearbox, when i change the clutch i plan on doing the gearbox oil and linkages.
