VRS Depreciation

Featured Replies

I unfortunatly allowed my heart to rule my head when purchasing my VRS 12 months ago and opted for a petrol TSI model.

Had no intention of selling anytime soon if ever but since then life wise a few major things have happened and I need to sell. The only thing is despite having good equity in the car 12 months ago the depreciation is crippling (£1400 in one month) and there are no private buyers out there.

The moral, buy diesel ??

Due to the waiting times I would have thought there would be plenty of buyers out there. I was even asked by a dealer not so long ago if they could buy my car off me.

I got mine from drive the deal and vat free so thus far avoided major depreciation.

I got mine at 9 / 10 months old so avoided a large amount of depreciation but still it is dropping like a stone. It appears that the diesel VRS is very much in demand as you have found but not so much the petrol for obvious reasons.

I bought my Vrs TSi in December last year using that VAT off deal etc, my brand new car was cheaper than the 1 year old used models on the dealers forecourt. I am still under the equity curve according to the guides, however a guide is only as useful if there are buyers !

Think of it in the buyer point of view. he saves £1400 for a car is not 'new' and have no say in the options or colours, i know i would rather have a new car then saving £1400

Depreciation is typically heavy for the first 18 months or so, before levelling off. Selling a car 12 months in is always going to result in a big loss regardless of make / model.

why do people keep saying they got there car VAT free....no you didnt!

But i agree the depreciation is crap not as much as a BMW though :(

Because that was what Skoda called their promotion, hence that is the why it is often referred to as the "VAT free" deal on a Skoda forum.

Clearly VAT was still paid but Skoda provided an equivalent discount off the list price.

Because i bought my car under "VAT Free" offer by Skoda, this means that I only paid £17500 for my brand spanking new freshly built CR TDI VRs. which is the equivalent of not paying the VAT, and in fact i did not pay the VAT, Skoda paid it.

I got same motor £13495 :D then added £490 ish for 5 year extended warranty&RAC I genuinely didnt pay VAT though

I bought the car at going on a year old at much below the new price and the depreciation has been heavy over the past few months.

£1400 was only in one month not the full depreciation a buyer would typically save £5000+ buying an 18 month old car and still have 18 months warranty. I accept often buying a new car might be a priority rather than saving.

Really, I did ok with my 3 series although I did get a very good price both when buying and selling about 18 months ago.

If I was in a position to do so, I'd buy a TSI Octavia in a heartbeat.

i order my car during the 'Vat free' period but got extra discount on top, so what will my be call

wouldnt it be a good idea to have a section on how much we paid for our cars and deals we got so others can compare and know what to aim for

Combination of badge & petrol. The MK6 GTI Sells for the same used as it does new. The same engine in the VRS drops big time due to the badge. Diesel will always have better residuals as running costs are going up more and more and the VRS is still aimed at the family market. That said price it well and there will always be a buyer. Depreciation does suck but it is part and parcel of buying a new car. Been there and won't be doing it again!!

Same here - only over the last couple of months has the Network Q car valuer gone below what i paid for my car in April 10 and that is without any options

Think the waiting list helps massively with residuals..

Also Vat free or Vat equivalent discount, it amounts to the same thing - are we really being that pedantic - does it matter? :dull:

I agree but the price I have asked is actually low and still the market is very slow as you have said the fact it is petrol really does not help.

Is the waiting list only for diesels?? Current price is £5K below drive the deal price of June 2010 which is steep to say the least. Somebody is going to get a bargain :) wishing I could keep it now :(

Delay is longer on diesel's but there is still a delay on petrol's if you want any kind of options.

Dealers keep saying they can get "standard" specification petrol's within a couple of weeks.

Add in some options and I've been told 6 weeks minimum.

There wasn't a great deal of "extra discount" to be had with the "Vat Free" offer.

I too managed to wangle a little bit more, but there was no moving once I'd got that price.

The car listed in my signature file came in at less than £100 over £20k.

I also got a fair £6500 trade-in in my 56 Petrol Octy vRS.

In total i got 20% discount instead of 16%ish the so call vat free offer when it was on so i got an extra 3.5% or £1000 ish on top of the vat offer

Just swapped my low mileage 57 plate bog standard vRS in after 12 months ... not something I intended to do- but loving the diesel scout...

Circumstances changed - work miles went way up, other half now living half way up a mountain in the lakes.

All I can say is ouch... 4.5K in 12 months - ok so some of that is dealers margin (say 1500) - it's up for a shade under 10.

Thank the lord for the car allowance ;-)

large petrols in any 'normal' model range taking a total bath at the moment especially anything larger than 2litre - most dealers can sell small diesels and petrol supermini's all day long, big petrols are beign given away... hence the top-gear section a few weeks back on the 6K uber barges....

Simes.

Diesel estates seem to be in greatest demand second hand.

I had a lot of interest in my 3yr old vRS PD estate I sold privately last year and the eventual buyer came from about 180 miles away to buy it, saying he'd been looking for 6 months to get hold of one.

Although the diesel costs more, I reckon you probably get back all that difference and find it easier to sell than the petrol.

It doesnt matter if its petrol or diesel ..................

I asked to p/x mine against a 1.8 tsi petrol superb and burst out laughing

mine is a 31st of december 60 plate VRS estate in white with DSG and XENONS, REAR PRIVACY GLASS in WHITE with 2,500 mles and they offered £15,500

Just been on skoda website and built my car with same xtras its £24,440 so its not just petrols

Ah but you didn't pay that I bet! With the "VAT Free" discount at the time, the price would have been a shade under £21,000. And that ignores any price rises.

There you go - I just reduced your depreciation by about 1/3

I try very hard not to think what my 10month, 10k old 1.8TSI is worth :(

There is no win-win in this game - the discount you get at purchase is snapped back when you trade-in

to be honest I dont remember what I payed exactly but I remember having a go about you only get vat of the basic price, not off any extras which i think mine was about 2 or 2 and a half thousands pounds worth or the delivery charge

but If you take your car in for a p/x say in 6 years time surley they carnt say yours is worth less because you saved a bit

ive just got back in a skoda after having an alfa brera and mito cloverleaf, the brera i bought at exactly one year old saved me more than £12,000 on the new price, it had only done 3000 miles, the cloverleaf lost 33% in one year. just got a 60 plate petrol vrs for what i think a very resonable price, you buy new a take a massive loss whatever you buy
