Me waiting for Tdi170 Elegance Yawnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnnn :wonder:

Bailey Pegasus 514 (1250Kg)

Yeti 2.0 Tdi 140 bhp 4x4 (just changed to Octavia Scout)

Never towed previously, but soon was very comfortable, car pulled great and felt very secure. Only realy notable difference was the fuel consumption dropped from mid 40's to mid 20's (not suprising, but everything else was remarkably easy).

I tow an Adria Altea that has a max weight of 1050 kg, although I suspect mine is actually just above 1000kg when normally loaded, with a 140 bhp 4x4.

I normally stick to the legal limits, but have seen 70 on occasions going down to Cornwall on some of the down slopes of the A30. Stability, with a Alko 130 stabiliser has never caused me any problems. I find the van tracks very accurately even when passed by rapid coach drivers on the M5.

On steep hills there is a need to drop down the box, but it is no worse than with any other similar powered car.

At the end of May we towed down to Southern Brittany and I found it more restful than when we did the same journey with the Freelander, and much more economical. Going back in 2 weeks to bring the 'van back.

Caravan: GTS Vogue 215. I have no idea what the weight is (not mine)

Elsie the Helipad (remapped CR140DSG)

See this thread

Absolutely brilliant at towing. particular sweet spot at about 3000rpm. Feels like she will pull anything up a steep mountain emoticon-0140-rofl.gif Very stable. as above average fuel consumption was just over 25mpg. Cruising at 60mph where possible and keeping that speed up ALL inclines. (some steep ones out of Amesbury towards London on the A303 and up the A34 around East Ilsley.

The DSG is so smooth, so much better than a manual (in my opinionemoticon-0140-rofl.gif) and with flappy paddles, which I used out on the open road all the time.emoticon-0136-giggle.gif

Best car I have ever used for towing (which includes an old classic RR)

Mike

I have a 170 Elegance on order, which will be used for towing.

I have no qualms about the 170 CR unit as I already have that in my current and previous Octavia vRS models.

I tow a 2010 Swift Island Jura (a dealer special based on the Charisma 230), weighing in at 1310Kg. I never feel short of power and have never found a motorway gradient yet that I cannot maintain 60mph on in fifth gear. This afternoon I have travelled from home down to Craigie Gardens Caravan Club site in Ayr ... going via East Kilbride to avoid Glasgow you meet a few stiff gradients, zoomed up all of them. Even the long, long climb on the M90 south of Perth was achieved last week at 60.

Stability too is excellent. I have caravanned all my life (since 10 days old in July 1970!) so appreciate a good stable towcar ... the caravan mags all say the Yeti is more stable than the Octy due to, among other things, the short tail overhang. If the Yeti is more stable than my Octy it will be awesome! (NB I do have an Alko Stabiliser and Alko ATC so it should be stable ... I aslo load very carefully and check noseweight every trip).

The one downside I see about the Yeti, like the Octy the full load tyre pressure is 0.9 bar above the normal running pressure. We caravan 12 or more times a year, sometimes changing site during longer trips which means a lot of time with the foot pump!

My one concern about the Yeti .... we caravan a lot, mostly on Caravan Club sites and I've yet to see a Yeti on site (or towing on the road for that matter)! Wonder why???

Ian If you look the paraphernalia many Club site users consider essential your question may be answered.:0)

My 140 tows an Avondale Rialto 1160 KG laden with no problems whatsoever and gets 31 mpg as long as I don't go go above 60 thus avoiding The Wardrobe Effect.

You will really love towing with 170 4x4

Re the tyre pressures, we carry one of these: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Ring-Automotive-RAC600-Digital-Compressor/dp/B000UPEHJU/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1312291228&sr=8-2

Thanks for that guys , this thread was prompted by a chat with a chap on a caravan site nr Calais , he had a 140 Elegance towing a 1300kg van , so I thought I would have a chat and pick his brains , as soon as I started talking 2 and 4 wheel drive I lost him , He had no idea the yeti was available with a choice of either , and he thought 50mph was moving at light speed , and when I said my normal towing speeds with the Passat in France were up around 70mph ( stability , sock solid ) all he said was O!,it was evident that, as nice as the guy was , his towing experience was not of much help to me,

My caravan is a Elddis Hurricane GTS weighing in at 1250 kg , well within the limit for a 170 4X4

No Yeti on a caravan club site ? badge snobbery

Badge snobbery? Don't think so. You can't move for Octavias, Superbs and the occassional Roomster.

There will be at least one Yeti doing the rounds of the Scottish CC sites network from March 12 onwards .... mine!!!!!!!! Who knows I may even head to Northumberland and the Lakes!

Try Blackmore CC site (Malvern) 18th-21st August - we will be there towing our Fleetwood Heritage 560/4 MTPLM 1460kgs, we may also be seen later in the year at Ferry Meadows (Peterbrough) and possibly Yellowcraig (East Berwick Nr Edinburgh) & I will also be attending the NEC Caravan show in October (but without the caravan - though I do have CC stickers front and rear) + any other sites we manage to get away to - we caravan all year, winter & summer.

We towed 1800+ miles to The Dordogne in June, no problems at all, very stable - Alko stabiliser and ATC as well as the Trailer stability program on the Yeti, gave us about 27/28 mpg (except when butting a terrible headwind going south when it dropped to 24/25 mpg,) usually cruise at about 65mph, though it will keep going well past 80 mph if needed !!

Range on tank was almost exactly the same as my Tucson, however the Tucson had a bigger tank,so the Yeti scored.

Altogether a most comfortable and easy vehicle to tow with, certainly the best we have ever had, and that includes Freelander, RAV4, Touran, Scenic, Zantia, BXTD, and a terrible Ford cortina !!

Conway Crusader 800kg with extra luggage and a motorcycle laid on top.

The total weight was about 1100 kg

Towed to the Rhine gorges at 60mph, using an Akco 1300 hitch, 41mpg

My Yeti is a 140SE 4x4

The lower height accounts for the higher mpg

possibly Yellowcraig (East Berwick Nr Edinburgh) & I will also be attending the NEC .

Yellowcraig is at NORTH Berwick, though it is in EAST Lothian. :) Wonderful site ... we use it regularly as its local to us.

May also be at the NEC ..... a new 2012 Swift is on the cards!

The August edition of Caravan magazine has a comparative between the Yeti and the Freelander, and comes down in favour of the Yeti (of course!!)

I always get North Berwick and East Lothian mixed up - perhaps I should have said East of Edinburgh !! or better still Dirleton (? spelling) agree it's a smashing site, and one of our favorites, though we havn't been for a couple of years due to visiting Number 1 Daughter in Australia, and number 2 producing our 3rd grandchild.

If you're planning to visit the NEC, PM me nearer the time and perhaps we can meet for an (expensive) cup of something?

Your trip to Dordogne mirrors our trip just 3 weeks ago with the Passat ( To La Roque Gageac , Nr Sarlat )and fuel was almost the same , good to know

A very helful thread !!

THANK YOU !! We were a bit further west at St Foy La Grande, about 12 miles west of Bergerac, 2nd year on the same site which is right on the river, will probably go again next year, if only for a few days as the owners are such nice people and the site is excellent.

We did 4 years on the trot on a site at St Andre D'Allas until the owner sold up (and then died) it's all mobiles now, pity...

Have I spotted you on 'T&T' with a cup in your hand ??

What mirrors do people use?

I borrowed my fathers which are designed for a classic Disco....barely useful....

I got a pair of the "sucker" type.

A lot of people don't seem to get on with them, saying they (obviously) reduce the available size of the normal mirror, but I didn't find that a problem.

Also didn't find they wobbled or vibrated.

I've got one spare clamp on type, if anyone wants it.

+1 Tried the clamp on type, but found they didn't suit the Yeti mirrors (or it could just be my ineptitude). Sucker mirrors work well and are dead easy to fit and remove.

Exactly, and I like simple!!

Milenco Grand Aero + longer arms - Rock Steady, best mirrors I've ever had. (and they do clip on !!|)
