Advice on new tyres.

Featured Replies

Hi All

I currently use Pirelli Rosso P Zero 225/40 18 92Y tyres but they do well to last a year. Can anyone recommend another make within the same price bracket that can do alot more miles?

Cheers

Shane

I always go michelin as they last longer.

If you want longevity over sporty go primacy. If you want sporty over life go for pilot sports.

Should be good for 20-30k.

I'm thinking Dunlop Sport Maxx. They seem to have better reviews then the P Zero Rossos.

Haven't a lot of vrs drivers complained about those dunlops?

yup members who had them from the factory/new complained about excessive wear, especially inner edges on the rears - which although a known issue anyway, some tyres suffer more than others

No No No No No No and No. Don't put these useless worthless expensive hunks of rubber on the car

Had these Dunlops on the car from the factory and the fronts lasted 8500 miles. Have the Pirellis on now and got 14500 from them so far (will need replacing soon)

Agree with going for the Michelins or for a cheaper tyre look for the Vredstein Sessantas.

I got about 18000 out of the Vredsteins on the fronts before a pothole incident crippled one of them (were close to being replaced anyway) and the Pirellis went on as I needed tyres there and then and my local Kwik-Rob didn't have the Michelins in stock that day

I need acouple of rears as well. I'm thinking of going with Michelen PS3. I've been told that Michelen actually have 1mm of extra tread than other brands. I've always had Michelen's on my previous cars and they've always been great.

Definately avoid the Dunlops though!

I'm also considering Bridgestone RE050's, has anyone tried them on their vRS?

I had RE050A's on my old Mk2 vRS.

Nice grip but wore down at an incredible rate - didn't get very many miles out of them at all.

My new FL vRS had Continental's (SC2) as a factory fit and I'm well impressed with them.

Nice grip and at nearly 6 months old not showing that much wear at all.

When I need replacement I'll certainly look into Continental's again, quite probably the new SC5.

I'm thinking Dunlop Sport Maxx. .

Utter, Utter Rubbish

Uniroyal Rain Sports 2 (Rainmasters). Nothing Better.

Hi

These are on a lot of new cars - I had them on mine and they are terrible.

The Dunlops are well known for sawtoothing.

I have put a couple of Falken 452's on the back a few months ago and they seem to be pretty good - plenty grip and quiet.

Cheers

Dave

I've just been quoted £162 a corner fitted for the PS3. £20 per tyre more than the RE050's. Worth it imo.

The salesman said the Michelen's are a better tyre and will last longer.

Errrr yes he would say that wouldn't he.

I have Continental sport contact 3's on my vrs and they are a good tyre, fairly quiet and loads of grip wet or dry.

conti sc3's cost me 136 a corner from kwik fit online. they are rated the best on autoexpress tyre review.

I have just ordered a pair of Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2 for £142 a corner fitted.

Good feedback on comfort, resistance and fuel economy as well as grip :)

Will be putting them on the back to get rid of the Dunlops quicker ;)

EDIT: Changed order to Rainsport 2 fitted for £107 a corner

PS3's was looking at the verders while back. but stuck with the michs .. best all round choice. Were good in the snow too

I've switched from Conti Sport Contact 3's which I was always very happy with, to the slightly cheaper Uniroyal Rainsport 2's, and I really love the Rainsports, car feels much more sure-footed when cornering at speed and of course they are just about the best thing you can have under you when it rains (and it does that a lot in Lancashire!)...

At Last, someone has listened to me. Top Man

How many miles are you getting from them.

Mine is eating tyres and not due to uneven wear either.

I only have a 1.8 TSi but I get through a pair of fronts in around 11k.

I have had std Continentals and Hankooks and am now on Goodyears.

I have also had a set of Vredstein Snow tyres and a pair of cheaper snow tyres on the front.

The car is under 12 months old and has 47k on the clock. lol

Try Kwikfit and ATS websites, unless you know someone with a Costco card - they'll be much cheaper there.

My vRS had Michelin Pilot Primacy tyres fitted when I bought it. I rotated the fronts to the rear and the rears to the front at about 11,000 miles and changed all four at 22,000 miles.

I went for Conti Sport Contact 3s as they had won a test in Auto Express and I'd had Sport Contact 2s fitted to a previous car, which I found to be very good.

At about 30,000 miles the fronts were looking to be wearing, so I changed the fronts to the rear etc. as I had before, but whilst cleaning the car last weekend I checked the tyres and the rears are down to about 2mm.

I have decided to put one of the rears in the boot as a spare and the spare on the car (I took the precaution of buying a full size Zenith Alloy as a spare not long after I bought the car), which has a brand new Sport Contact 3 and buy another SC3 to put on the other rear.

The point of the post is that the Michelins covered 22,000 miles and the Contis, about 15,000. When the Contis have worn out, I am tempted to try a set of Uniroyal RainSport 2s as they are a bit cheaper and if they are as good on the vRS as they are on my wife's Chrysler Crossfire, they will do very well indeed.

Nothing wrong with Kumho KU31's now KU39's for a solid mid-range choice. At current wear rate I will get 20-25k from a set of fronts. Very quiet and reasonable performance all round.

Mich PS3s if you are keeping the car 20K miles plus as they work out cost per mile on par part with most.

What price safety. No matter what engine, mods etc on the tyre is the only thing between you and the road.

Contis a solid second, got them on the Octy Diesel Est and it siuts that car.

There is now Mich Super Sports which take things to another level. (Only available in 18" currently so can have on our VRS but not L&Ks but that siuts).

What to VW-Audi use for their sports cars? R18 etc, Michelin. Says it all.

They were all fitted together and they have covered about 7k. The fronts are about a third worn and the rears slghtly less.

Fantastic grip in both wet and dry.. Made by Continental by the way

On one car, I've got 17" Michelin Pilot Primacys on the front (all four when I bought it) and I can't wait to get rid of them. They scrabble in the wet, understeer and flop in hard corners and are generally crap. But they do seem to last, I'm afraid to say. On the back, I've got Falken FK-452s just to try, and they seem pretty stable, good grip on dry roads even if I haven't tormented them too badly in the wet! Usually on the other car, on 16" rims I have Turanza ER300s, which despite getting poor press from the Skoda community, I can't fault. Used them for years and years, and they last me up to two years or about 50,000 miles.

I had F1 assymetricals, pilot sports and a whole host of other premium tyres, my overall favourite ended up being Hancook V12 Evo :) they were the tyres that lasted well, gripped brilliantly in the wet and dry and gave confidence for consistent very high speed cornering on track  tyres are a personal choice and series of trade offs once you get into the decent ones. It's also of note I've not tried them on a FWD though, only my 400bhp/400ftlb 200sx and my old M3, so they certainly work on higher power cars, with performance backed by lap times B)

And as a bonus, they are pretty cheap...

Edited to add, the Kumhos are also pretty good, got them on our new Audi TT and had them on several other sub 250bhp cars including a cooper S etc :)
