EDIT - excuse my vote & post - I came in from the recent posts results & didn't notice I was in the Yeti forum.

well I certainly post in non yeti forums so I don't think there is any reason Octavia owners shouldn't be allowed to post in here :giggle:

and the real benefit you are yet to appreciate is not so much getting going (as you have said you have managed that with standard tyres) but rather stopping and cornering. Not long til the snow now :smirk:

Noted - but never had problems. Suitable speed, use of gears & brakes has always got me by, although I've been a victim of others not so fortunate! :'(

Looking forward to the snow!

S'pose it depends on where & just how high you live................

Planning Outlook: All mountain areas of Britain from Saturday, 1st October, 2011

On Saturday and into Sunday a slow moving belt of wet weather is likely to edge southeastwards eventually to lie

somewhere between southern Scotland and Snowdonia to the Peak District. There will be hazy, very warm conditions to

the south and cooler, fresher, much clearer weather further north. A belt of rain will move from the northwest on Sunday

night and through Monday marking a change to much lower temperatures. Often dry but showery at times over the

Highlands where at times showers may fall as snow down to 600m. Risk here also of gales and more persistent rain or

snow for short periods.

Taken from the MWIS site for today.

LOL, true, I didn't mean there would be widspread snow in the next few days, I just meant generally that autumn is well underway so winter's not that far off. At a recent parents' evening at my son's school we were told that they were being told to plan for snow disruption in October. Of course now we've had a couple of the warmest days of the entire year and they're forecasting 24 degrees again today. Might leave the winter tyres off for a day or two yet!

Our Goverment wants to save money at the moment. What better way to do it than to move the onus of winter driving from them to us by insisting winter tyres be fitted in the UK during the winter months? If you don't have them you can't get to work and you cannot as a result blame anyone but yourself. In one quick move the Govermnet will also reduce the costs associated with road closures due to accidents and all the delays due to snow AND save money by having to buy less grit... Win win for everyone I say.

I had my Yeti for only a few weeks when I fitted the winter rubber last yeat. I was amazed at how I could stop and steer and generally drive as if I was in a car park in the middle of Spain in August. Driving on eggs everywhere on summer tyres will of course get you anywhere you need to go. Until that one emergency stop. That is all it takes. One slide somewhere and you will regret not having had decent tools on your car for the conditions. Maybe it will just be a bit of body damage but lets hope it won't be something far worse...

When the summer tyres are on the winters are off. So the cost over three years is negligible (unless you go for the option to change the rubber on your exsisting alloys - that makes little sense financially as you will pay at the start of the season and at the end). But to have an extra set it will just be the cost of the steel wheels you need worry about. Or the cheap eBay alloys...

Llanigraham: you say you have no storage for a set of winter tyres? What about your caravan? If you are going away in it you take the tyres out and leave them in your house. And when you get back home they go back in the van. Job done.

I think when people talk about all the reasons why we can't go to winter tyres as a law, storage, cost etc, I think you need to look at all the countries that do, Scandinavian, Germany, Czech Republic to name a few and ask how they do it. Surely if the Czech Republic can overcome the problems so can we. It is a very British approach to look at reasons why we can't do something rather than the positives of making a change. There are plenty of ways to make this work, it just needs a change of mindset.

Driving a BMW up a ski slope for example was hugely impressive in my opinion!

Borrowing an alternative name for a piste groomer, a Yeti doing that could be a 'pistie beastie'.

Sadly the average Brit has a totally different outlook to that of our continental neighbours. The typical UK driver seems to struggle with complying with existing legislation and too many see it as there right to drive without road fund licence, MoT and insurance, let alone legal 'summer' tyres. You can see how much the law is despised when seemingly every other driver can be seen on their mobile phone.

To add into the mix the need for winter tyres would unfortunately lead to even more widespread lawbreaking.

I'm convinced totally by the virtues of winter tyres and would welcome every car being obliged to have them fitted between November and March but it simply won't happen. It's just seems too sensible for 90% of us!

Dropped my spare wheels off today to get winter tyres fitted, should be picking them back up tomorrow all ready for the cold weather.

Just ordered a set of 215x60 16 Nokian WR D3's and steel wheels from Mytyres.co.uk,hope they come soon.

Usually pretty quick and a very good choice, wish I still had a set of Nokian's. Will have to wait and see how we get on with the Hankook's I bought earlier from Camskill.

I saw a Continental TV ad on 5* for winter tyres this evening during Burn Notice.

Agreed. Last year there were hundreds of people stranded overnight on the motorway in their cars near here. The Transport Minister got sacked and lots of people were mumping and moaning and saying "it's a disgrace", "someone should have done something" etc etc. Yet if you'd suggested they should have fitted appropriate tyres (it was something like minus 16 as I recall) then their attitude became "why should I?". People are just unwilling to take any sort of responsibility, it;s easier just to blame someone else and expect someone to do something.

Years ago I had a guy come to see me at work as a door had blown shut on his finger and he'd lost the tip. "I want to sue someone" he said. When I suggested we'd need an address for God as he had responsibility for weather he wasn't too impressed. :giggle:

Just been to pick up the fitted tyres.

You won't be disappointed with those. I went through last winter with a set on my Yeti and they are brilliant.

I think that any winter tyre will be better than any summer tyre in the winter.

We will all say that the winter tyres we have fitted are great emoticon-0140-rofl.gif

My Continental WinterContact TS810's were brilliant, but they have been superseded by the TS830's now emoticon-0136-giggle.gif, which are supposed to be even better..........

I just ordered a set of semperit speed grip 2 with steel wheels from the dealer for 540 euros. Pick them up next week.
